Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

I thought the Demons souls remake did really well for them!?
In fact it was probably the only reason I would want a PS5.

I wonder what the hell happened.

I don't think anyone knows if Bluepoint or any other studio was forced to do live service. It's possible. At the very least, it was a concerted effort by SIE executives to push some studios in that direction. Shawn Layden stated flatly that he left SIE because he did not agree with the live service direction. So this definitely came from the top down. So why not all studios? I'm guessing they were wanting to minimize the negative reaction from their diehard fans. No way to know for certain.

Regardless, I think the strategy has been a disaster and Bluepoint is the latest victim.

They have to sell future hardware somehow. They were selling a shit load of consoles on previous mindshare. Alot of that is gone. People happily bought ps3/ps4/ps5s knowing the great exclusives games are coming. Well People will know better next time ;).

And what exactly have you released that would reduce said slowed industry growth? That's right, Concord and fuck all else. Exactly. Sony hate ahead read at own risk:
Demon's Souls launched the console. It's the most profitable generation ever for Playstation. Yet somehow saving the fucking salary of the mostly work from home dudes at Bluepoint is going to help Sony save money. So people can make an extra 1 penny for every $10,000.00 they invest. At the same time ruining the reputation of the brand and guaranteeing it will go to shit and die off over the next decade.

Microsoft has staying power, they actually provide something that people can't get elsewhere. Sony has always been on a tight rope and offers nothing unique except their software which is now shit. Nobody needs fucking Sony. Once they piss everyone off they are gone like blackberry. Sony has no AI or innovation and no ability to further humanity. They have nothing but a money pit for their investors and a dwindling group of fans but with shit like this the gamers will dry up eventually with dumbass shit like this going down.

18 pages in already for something posted just a few hours ago. This has clearly struck a chord with GAF.

I'm unbelievably pissed off about this one, and lost the little shred of hope I had left for Sony first party (Bloodborne remake).

If Sony is going to be synonmous with shitty Horizon games and nonstop GAAS trash, count me out for PS6.

They are definitely doing great!

Sony just sits back and has GaaS do the work, that is smart.

Sony doesn't have any competition, people will need their consoles to be play their GaaS favorites.

Sony can literally just sit back and chill, going forward.

To be honest if I was MS I would send emails to all the Bluepoint devs (incl. those reassigned to other Sony teams) and offer them a job at a newly established Greenpoint Studio.
 
Man Kojima had the foresight gift to stay independent.
Imagine current Sony not being happy not getting a Death Stranding gaas and take the studio out Papa EA style.

I mean what the hell is so funny about people losing their jobs? Even though this is a drop in the bucket compared to what MS and other companies have done in regards to shutting down studios.

But let's call a spade a spade, this live service/a fucky 2% PC chase has caused all of this by the new leadership from here in the US and in Europe. Yoshida wasn't rocking with this dumb strategy and If remember correctly Kaz was asked about this direction and he didn't favor it either. Herman and Jim has done nothing but make a mockery of the brand.

As a PS only owner for the last 15 years, there is no defending really.
I think the only people who would defend this are the GaaS supporters at this stage, not even PS fans.

They killed the studio that made the excellent Demons Souls remake and then assigned to them a game no PS/GoW fan ever wanted while people are begging for a Bloodborne remake.
And they did it a couple of weeks after showing that potato Horizon GaaS thing and a State Of Play which was saved by third party games.

I am glad Kojima never accepted their money to set up his studio. Current Sony leadership is worthless.

Because even before they were acquired by Sony, BluePoint had done fantastic work. And we (Gaf) don't like seeing good workers being punished by execs for no fucking reason.

I loved BluePoints Demon's Souls remake. I think it and Astro Bot are easily the best exclusive games on the PS5.
 
Can we talk about how much of a wuss they made Kratos in Ragnarok so that he wouldn't have toxic masculinity, but the entire reason people liked God of War was the toxic masculinity?

Then this latest god of war games shadow drops and gets a meh meta score.

I haven't really loved a Sony game since Demon's Souls remake.

Sony doesn't respect men being men and their pipeline has been fucked up for years. Ruined, but I've been making excuses. I thought gaas was over but it's just getting started. I'm too old for this shit.

Dawg, respectfully, what the fuck are you talking about. The majority of living room consoles are Fortnite/CoD/sports game boxes. All that's changed in recent years is that PlayStation now has zero competition in this space, they don't need to keep funding exclusive after exclusive to entice people to their console. It sucks big time but you're being dramatic.

You'll get no argument from me at all about Sony's GAAS push being a disaster. Leadership should have discouraged studios with no live service track record, or who weren't built with live service in mind, from doing anything like that.

They absolutely should have encouraged studios to play to their strengths. Any live service projects from their single-player teams should have been side projects. Not the main thrust of their development time.

There has been such an obvious hole in their offerings thanks to the GAAS gamble. My question is merely if the failed project Bluepoint was on was self-inflicted. All we have is people saying it's "obvious" teams were forced but no evidence and no real explanation why certain teams were spared with no rhyme or reason.

If Bluepoint chose that path, then the guilt Sony has was in not recognizing that was a terrible idea and they shouldn't have incentivized live service so much. But, if I find out that Sony did indeed force studios, that immensely changes my opinion on the matter.

Even if Sony has no direct competition in the console market, there will always be substitute products to play games on. For many, cloud gaming will suddenly become an attractive alternative if Sony goes into full arrogance mode.
