Sony Gamescom Press Conference Thread: Let Us Dream

I've had a PS4 preordered since E3. After today, if you gave me a choice between a PS4 and an XBone, I would choose the XBone. More timed exclusives, Titanfall, more exclusive content. The fact that Kinect might actually not suck... MS is flat-out buying their advantages and its working. The Sony conference was underwhelming. I'll stick with the preorder but man, MS did win today in my mind.

Also, the European equivalent of Jack Tretton is no Jack Tretton. I like Jack.

Don't get me wrong. I am glad indie games exist and I understand their worth in the greater scope of things. I do hope they thrive and succeed.

This is my point:
Was this gamescon an indie game conference? It sure felt like one with the majority of the time spent talking about indie games.
I definitely don't want a glorified Ouya. I know PS4 will be awesome and they will eventually release some awesome games be it indie or AAA, but this gamescon had me feeling like the PS4 is a super glorified Ouya because of all the emphasis on indie games.

Honestly I think that Sony is trying to remove the distinction of being an "indie" game and get us back to when everything was just "games" period. A time with dozens of publishers, a time when creativity abounded, a time with multiple genres, a time where one could take a chance and not risk bankruptcy.

We all know Sony has the first party studios to bring out the multi million dollar titles, we know the third party publishers will also bring the big budget stuff (eventually in the case of exclusive money hat bs).

In the end the Indy stuff will carry the console between droughts, and F2P will blossom just as it has in PC land. F2P I'm particularly excited about. I've spent nothing to try out multiple games, many which gave me hours of fun (planetside 2, Smite for example) and those games worthy have won my cash. In all honesty many F2P feel just as triple A as regular titles. Man this gen is going to be exciting.

To me this just confirms that big announcements a rather scarce during Gamescom. It's more of a consumer expo where people get to actually play all the stuff. People were expecting way too much

What if...

They ran out of announcements. That's it. No more. Can GAF even handle such a notion?

They've given a release date. A Price. What the console looks like. What the UI is. What the launch games are. What indie and big games are coming for the system next year.

The difference is I like to play games, and want to play next gen games I am interested in earlier than later. I was just disappointed by the conference is all. I didn't end up getting a PS3 for a few years because of the lack of interesting games to me, so I was hoping Sony would be showing some stuff to get excited for. Are they filling the time with indie games, because they don't have much else to show? That's just what it feels like to me.

You didn't buy a ps3 years into its release because there weren't enough games interested enough for you. For some reason this would be an issue for you with a ps4. If Sony didn't do enough for you in this conference then just wait until they do. I can't see how this possibly can be a problem at all.

It's getting harder to defend gamers when I come in this thread after watching Sony drop prices, announce partnerships with ISP's, praise indies, and drop content bombs on a scale never before seen, and see certain people act like spoiled, petulant children...

Its also very easy to misinterpret typed out words in a forum. This is a forum where people of all ages can express their own opinions. A lot of times written words can be taken out of context.

I think its best not to judge and label people based on statements in a thread expecting opinions.

My confusion over the people disappointed about the lack of AAA games... do you think that just aren't coming? I mean obviously all of their studios are making games. Obviously it's going to get a buttload of multiplats. Obviously they will secure third party exclusives.

I mean that is obvious, right? Even when sony was at their worst they still delivered great games.

AAA games cost a fuckload of money to make. Launch is literally the moment your system has the smallest install base. Yes, you need big games to move systems but are we really worried the PS4 isn't going to move systems? They are smartly putting most of their development dollars into fall '14 when there will be enough systems in the world for them to make money off the games. A huge first party game a quarter until then.... and tons of multiplats, indies and other tiers of games.

I'm really going out of my mind trying to figure out how them showing off all of these games is being thought of as a bad thing. You know what the biggest game of E3 2014 is going to be for MS? You do! It's fucking Halo! We already know. Does that sell systems now? Some of you argue yes but I don't agree. I think it makes people go "I'll get it when Halo comes out."

Sony is going to sell a fuckload of systems this year and it's shining a light on the games coming out early for it to help those games sell as well. If they showed off Uncharted 4, SSM game, Guerrilla's IP, GT6-PS4, etc all they would be doing is saying "wait till next year, that's when the crazy games start releasing."

And if you need constant AAA experiences to justify a console... wait till next year, that's when the crazy games start releasing. :)

I am comparing the current gen titles for PS3 vs Xbox 360. I have pre-ordered both PS4 and Xbone launch consoles. But I do think PS4 will be better based on my personal experience this gen. For me PS3 is better in all aspects.

That said, I know others love the 360's lineup this gen better and that's cool. This is just my opinion.

Oh, no doubt. I think a track record matters, and will be buying a PS4 ages before I touch an XB1 (and I did buy a PS3 first as well) because of how well the PS3 has been supported and I prefer its first party studios. I just don't want dust collecting on my PS4 while I wait for Holiday support like many people have been doing with the Wii U.

just like the romans we lust for more, more, more!!

I am one of those kinds of people who always needs to have the new stuff when it gets released... Its a sickness... I have said to myself that I will not get a Xbone because I hardly ever use my 360. But I already pre-ordered it and will have the launch edition. I also got a Wii-U at launch. My kids love the Wii-U.

Even if no games suck me in right away, it will be pretty in my entertainment center and will will find some other uses out of them :)

One huge thing that I haven't noticed being mentioned at all for PS4 is PS Home. I wonder what's going on with that. I was hoping for an improved experience, where I don't have to wait a million years for areas to load, because the load times are the single biggest hindrance to an otherwise cool experience. I thought it was profitable for Sony, so I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about it for PS4, unless it'll be exactly the same as on PS3.

Indie games are more fun than many AAA games

Exactly.

Give me Super Meat Boy, FEZ, Thomas Was Alone, Monaco and/or Battleblock Theater over bloated shit like Halo 4, Gears of War: Judgement and Call of Duty any day.

Do they justify the hardware power of the PS4? Maybe not. Then again, no one is forcing you to upgrade.

I don't understand why people are mad that Sony didn't show SM, ND, GG, etc next games. We know they are working games for the PS4. I think Sony may have learned their lesson by not showing games too early. GT5, The Last Guardian, etc where shown way too early and took 5+ years to release. Hell, the TLG still isn't release.

Show the games when they are ready and not CGI trailers for games not coming until late next year or early 2015.

would like to quote a post I made yesterday that everyone seemed to ignore.

Well supposedly the late October release date already leaked. CBOAT and then someone else in retail leaked Oct 21st before that. People need to go into this conference tomorrow with the expectation that the release date may be the biggest piece of news.

People always get over hyped. Sony is obviously keeping some big title announcements close to the chest as they don't want to blow there load for next year so early, and they have nothing else left to announce for launch.

Who ever was in control of that camera needs to be taken out back and be put down.

Lol, yeah those zoom outs were rage inducing.

Personally, I liked the conference despite the fact that we did not see any new first party games. What was there though got me excited and intrigued about a bunch of games I had not heard about. I know I will want games from Sony's big studios but the focus on the smaller stuff and much of it time exclusive was appreciated. We all know that the big stuff is there and coming. Indies, though, deserve attention and I think Sony wants their own Minecraft type game. Also, PSN is finally going to give Live Arcade a run for its money with this much support.

An hour and 20 minutes and my friends and I (at work) could not believe how awful Sony's conference was. I get there are people out there who like hand drawn/stick man and circles games...with floaty sketchy things that fly around and draw and undrawn themselves and whatever.. but Kriiiiiiiiiiiiist I didn't preorder a $400 Playstation4 for that .. I just... animated doodle sketch style games that could have been done on PS2 .. I mean I guess they celebrate art and creativity I guess.. simple gaming or whatever.
I accept there is a place for this on "the most powerful console in the world"
but.. that place is a small section of the Playstation Store.. ya know?

I am fine with celebrating indie, I am. But it was front and center the whole damn conference. EA's was practically an XBOX 1 show, and they brought the goods. It wasn't a spectacular show, but they got people excited with the blockbusters.

I was blown away at just how underwhelming Sony show was in response. I can only assume Sony is saving the best for TGS. But I thought this was a real missed opportunity.

My point: Since E3 Microsoft has made a lot of very good, and very popular decisions.

Microsoft has reversed their DRM position, cause the people demanded it. They reversed the mandatory Kinect Always On policy, cause the people demanded it. And now they're including a copy of FIFA 14 for every XB1 preorder in Europe.. because at $499, people demanded value for that extra $100 investment, and -- for many-- the Kinect didn't equate to that value.

But soccer (and FIFA) is popular as hell over in Europe. It would be like Sony packing in Madden 14 with every PS4 pre order state side.

I don't know man, I think it's too early to say Sony is being cocky or complacent, but I think they brought the excitement level down a few notches with this show. And didn't do anything to counter the popular moves Microsoft has made recently. Hopefully
they KILL it at TGS. But I felt this show didn't speak to me at all.

You didn't buy a ps3 years into its release because there weren't enough games interested enough for you. For some reason this would be an issue for you with a ps4. But I would like there to be some great games I'm interested in coming next year. Why can't I be disappointed that they didn't show anything that would make me excited? I bet there will be great games that will blow my mind 30 years from now too, but waiting isn't fun.

I'm genuinly interested in having you list all those graphically amazing titles on the One. Honest question since I must have missed on a lot of what has been announced...

Maybe the 1 billion doller investment MS are making on games will result in a lot more big AAA games?

Does anyone know how much sony are investing in the same timeframe? maybe 500 million?

Maybe thats the reason there making a big splash about indies because they know they cant compete with mircrosofts AAA exclusive line up? Yoshida did not say at E3 what budget the 40 exclusive games will be, maybe only 6 are AAA?

You said it best when you explained that those who cry wolf and threaten (bwahahaha...if you like the Xbox launch software, well, buy and Xbox One, it's really simple) to boycot the PS4 in favor of the Xbox-One are mostly deeply hurt Sony ardent supporters (I didn't want to use that other term) who are more interested in winning internet verbal battles against the other camp representatives that enjoying what they have (and will have). What difference does showing Uncharted 4 now make, if the game wouldnt' be ready for another 15 months? Nothing...except inflating the gigantic egos of some twisted minds, who will then roam the net to rub it in the face of their virtual ennemies. Concretely, howver, it amounts to nothing.
You're making too much sense, famousmortimer...that's the weakness in your whole set of arguments.

Rime and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture looked exactly like you described. [/sarcasm]

The first next gen DW might be kamen rider which they're obviously gonna announce in japan because it'll be a huge title there

I would be down with that. I would love to see what they can do with 8GB of RAM on a Warriors game.

Maybe the 1 billion doller investment MS are making on games will result in a lot more big AAA games?

Probably that money is invested in having timed exclusivity for CoD maps, for exclusive game modes in FIFA and several other games, and timed exclusivity for some games, like TitanFall. And to bundle FIFA with any XBox One on EU.

Don't expect that 1 billion dollar investment goes to create 10 GTA-like AAA first party games of 100M cost each.

I think it was great, but the only thing I hated about it, and this is the same for E3 conference as well, is the Assasins creed 4 preview. I couldn't wait till it's over. It's a sony conference not ubisoft.

I agree with this. My whole issue with this conference was not about a lack of AAA titles being shown, it was the abundance of time used to talk about indie games when instead I would have really liked for them to dive a bit deeper into the capabilities of the PS4.

Show us more of the UI, show us the DS4 a bit more (even on an indie title), stream a movie clip, play with the PS eye, show us what else the PS4 can do besides play a bunch of indie games.... The awesome games will eventually come... I wanted to see the PS4 in action.

One thing I'm noticing talking to people, and I'm not accusing anyone here specifically of it, is that people are upset that it isn't a knockout punch to Microsoft. They wanted AAA game after AAA game and for them to bury MS in a ditch.

Indies and other creative games don't do that. But if you like a variety of games - who gives a shit if what they showed doesn't murder Microsoft... it was a giant stack of games that looked fun as hell.

Microsoft will be just fine in time. Sony isn't going to kill them. Microsoft also isn't going to ruin gaming forever if they sell some consoles. I don't get this almost paranoid hatred of them (and this is coming from someone who hates them quite a bit). Competition is good.

The PS4 wouldn't be what it is if the 360 didn't kick the absolute shit out of the PS3 for a few years.

Yep.

You know who should have felt at least a bit (and I say just a bit) threatened? Valve.

Now I don't refer to Steam sales. I don't refer to PC graphics. I don't refer to the millions they get. I don't refer free online MP to all games that are not subscription-based MMO's

I mean games as a service. With games that are available on both PS4 and Vita and one that even has cross platform play with all three PS platforms, F2P games, MMO's, I feel that PSN is being ramped up a lot.

You can play every game you have on Steam on any computer you have. But the degree of easiness where you can stop playing and immediately pass your progress seems to be facilitated a lot with Vita. Sure, you have Steam Cloud, but the Vita is done specifically for this. If you want the same graphical fidelity on a second machine you pass on you might need to shell more than the price of the Vita.

Plus the services of streaming, video uploading, photo sharing, heck the only thing they're missing is groups and the ability to change username.

I feel Sony is on the right track. And they're just beginning with this. Wonder what the next 5 years will hold for us.

Where did they find that guy, zooming in and out on Jim Ryan, focussing on the crowd when important stuff was on display, fuck that dude.

To be fair, it might not have been the camera operator's fault, rather the director or switch operator. Generally when doing a live shoot, camera ops will zoom in on a subject when their angle isn't live to reframe or pull focus. It's very possible there was a miscommunication between the control room and op. So the crazy zooming was a result of the action being stopped midway when someone realized the angle was live.

OR, the guy/girl just sucked at their jobs. These things happen.

Initially I was simply happy with the conference, but was hoping for more so I was also a little disappointed. But upon reflection, the conference was pretty good in that it did exactly what it needed to do for me. It has gotten me more excited for Killzone and Infamous, it has showed some very interesting games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Rime, I was super impressed by Murasaki's Baby for the Vita.
I can see why some people are complaining, in that Sony are potentially holding back their AAA 'Knockout Blow' titles but as a platform the games that are already revealed for the PS4 for me personally are awesome.
I was a little disappointed in the launch date, I am assuming Australia will get lumped with Europe so a late November launch is a just a little later than what I was hoping. But it's hardly a massive concern.

The classic 'Give it to me now!' vs. tactical long-term thinking.

We already pretty much know every single game there is to come in X1's near future. Sure, there are some gems in that list; but if that list doesn't strike you as anything short of amazing, then X1 will be a poor choice for you, because that is all that's coming.

Now, conversely, Sony has the edge with a near-guaranteed sell-out at launch and can afford to stagger and time their announcements for say VGA's, major Game Informer -publications and such; and these announcements create gigantic hype at the time they're made and instill that excitement that the other tactic lacks.

There will be a lot of people, who currently think 'PS4 looks shit, no AAAAAA-gamez'; Sony knows this. They're also aware that a large proportion of these people are not interested in purchasing a console at launch anyway, and are waiting for the 'next big thing'. When the next ND game, or SSM game, or some other is announced, people will talk about it, hype it and that timing will be more optimal compared to showing all your cards at the very start.

For instance, consider TLoU; it had a few months all to itself and was one of the best brand developments in a long time; an absolutely ingenious move, even though it may have been doubted initially. It strengthened both, the PS and the ND brand immensely. Why? Because, it was the only thing people talked about, and it was a unique pure quality game.

What is important for both console platforms is not the launch-launch, but the quarters after and especially Fall 14; and they're ready for those times.

Be calm and carry on.

I thought both the MS and Sony's conference were terrible. Probably E3 fallout had me too excited.

Rime looks really good, so does Rapture. But there was so little to be seen. Everything else was just uninteresting. I applaud the indie drive both companies are doing. Hopefully these guys will do some interesting things with the tech, especially Kinect.

It also says a lot that Sony not once showed what the camera can do on stage. Look out Vita, there's a new kid to ignore in town!

well said! There will be plenty of games to keep PS4 owners occupied until the heavy 1st party games are released.

I believe at one point they stated there were 7 exclusive games that were to be announced, and then they showed a TON of stuff, most of which seem to be self published.

Were these the SCE published games that are exclusives?

- Mursaki Baby (PSV) from Ovosonico
- Resogun (PS4) by Housemarque
- Shadow of the Best (PS4 only?) by Heavy Spectrum
- Everyone's Gone to the Rapture (PS4 only?) by thechineseroom
- Helldivers (PS3/PS4/PSV) by Arrowhead Studios
- Rime (PS4 only?) by Tequila Works

That's only six. Anybody have a definitive list?

well said! There will be plenty of games to keep PS4 owners occupied until the heavy 1st party games are released.

I know I will be busy with NBA 2k14 and Madden 25 on PS4. Cant wait!

Plus the PS3 games... GTA V, Beyond 2 Souls.. How much time can one person have? This will eat all mine up...

Am I the only one who was pleasantly surprised at all of the GAMES Sony showed today and not bitching about them indies because they are GAMES? I'm getting a feeling people are overlooking the fact that Sony announced 15+ GAMES after everyone complained Sony didn't show any at E3. I must be jaded.

People, this is a freaking Console launch where COD, Assassin's Creed, Battle Field is going to be released as well, there can't be any bigger AAA games.

You got conference, a release date, there were more games announced than E3, yet there were not big enough for you. I'd watch the presser again, because a lot you while waiting for the next Uncharted and GOW to be announced missed out on some great looking games.

It's a problem because I want there to be great games that appeal to me sooner rather than later. Why is that hard to understand? Yes, I am sure there will be some great games years from now. But I would like there to be some great games I'm interested in coming next year. Why can't I be disappointed that they didn't show anything that would make me excited? I bet there will be great games that will blow my mind 30 years from now too, but waiting isn't fun.

What would you do in those 30 years in the meantime? Twiddle your thumbs in boredom until finally that 30 year mark happens? You said a few years into ps3 lifecycle for you you be interested to buy one. Was that an excruciating wait or something? Did you not entertain yourself with other platforms until you finally bought a ps3 which was much more affordable and bigger library?

Unless you have a ridiculously narrow taste that you can't imagine yourself play anything else besides a ps4 I find your whole complaint odd. The system hasn't even been released yet, vast majority of the people who will be owners of a ps4 are not getting one in the next year. And it's for a reason.

The more rational response should be "Well, nothing at gamescon for ps4. I guess I could see what else is their for PC/Xbox 360/Xbox One/PS3/Vita/3DS/Wii U in the near future, unitl there is something on the ps4 I'm interested in."

Nail head meet hammer. Good job!

This was disappointing. More than 50% of the time was dedicated to PS3 and Vita, and the lion's share of PS4 content was made up of indie stuff, and slightly higher budget indie stuff. And let's not forget the camera director constantly cutting away from direct feed trailers with a super zoomed out shot of the screen. What the hell?

This infuriated me. My god, who thought that was a good idea? It looked automated it happened so often. Just horrible, no hyperbole, really fuckin' turrible.

I'm an indie dev and my dream is one day my game will be big enough to be mentioned at a conference, and even I thought it was a bit overboard with indie love, haha.

I thought it was a solid conference; surprised that others thought it was terrible honestly!

Thank you for posting this!!! :)

It wasn't terrible IMO, just wished they spent a little less time 'making out' with the indie devs and spent a bit more time showing off the PS4. They started off by saying its the most powerful console ever built.. then completely went off track...
