Sony Interactive Entertainment to skip Gamescom, only to have a major presence at ChinaJoy the same month

Unlike other major platform holders like Microsoft and Nintendo, SIE has decided to skip Gamescom once again this year:

Sony Interactive's PlayStation division markets consoles, accessories, services and games

Unlike Microsoft, Xbox and Nintendo, PlayStation 5 manufacturer Sony Interactive will not be exhibiting at Gamescom 2025.

Five weeks before the start of Gamescom 2025, it is clear: PlayStation manufacturer Sony Interactive will not participate in the games fair this year either. The last appearance in Cologne dates back to 2019.

In response to an inquiry from GamesWirtschaft, Sony Interactive Entertainment Deutschland GmbH announced:

"Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) currently has no plans to be represented as an exhibitor at Gamescom 2025. However, we look forward to exciting content and releases coming later this year."

Gamescom 2025: Sony PlayStation officially cancels

A concrete reason for the renewed Gamescom cancellation is not available at the moment. Many PlayStation fans had speculated that the console manufacturer and publisher would be at the start this time.

Because unlike 2024, there would be an autumn blockbuster with the blockbuster Ghost of Yotei (released on October 2), which is supposed to play a major role in the Christmas business and is also flanked by a PlayStation 5 special model.

Nevertheless, there will be no shortage of PS5 consoles and DualSense controllers at the Cologne exhibition center - after all, publishers such as Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Capcom or Bandai Namco Entertainment will present their new games.

A continuously updated list of Gamescom 2025 exhibitors (which will grow significantly during the course of the day) and much more information can be found at GamesWirtschaft. Among other things, the participation of Microsoft Xbox including the divisions Bethesda, Blizzard Entertainment and Activision (via Opening Night Live) has been confirmed – Nintendo will show the Switch 2 and the associated games and accessories.

Gamescom 2025 will start on August 20 (Wednesday) and end on August 24 (Sunday). The organizers advertise with the "biggest Gamescom of all time". Tickets are still available in advance for all Gamescom days. All information on the programme, events, games and exhibitors can be found fresh daily at GamesWirtschaft.

But on the other hand, SIE seems to be planning its biggest presence yet on the Chinese gaming expo, ChinaJoy (which is lacking the presence of both Microsoft and Nintendo), in light of major Chinese-developed projects produced by PlayStation Studios releasing this year, like Lost Soul Aside and Convallaria:

PS5 to Have Major Presence at ChinaJoy Expo in Shanghai Next Month

PS5 to Have Major Presence at ChinaJoy Expo in Shanghai Next Month 1

Sony rarely attends gaming conventions anymore, but it's still putting in effort in emerging countries, like China.

On that note, the platform holder has announced plans for a "major booth" at ChinaJoy 2025 in Shanghai next month, which is one of the biggest gaming expos in the world.

Last year's event attracted over 360k attendees, so this is an important opportunity for PlayStation to put its console brand in front of prospective consumers.

There's no word on which games it'll show just yet, but we'd expect the likes of Lost Soul Aside to be playable on the show floor, given its importance as a Chinese developed game. Other likely candidates include Where Winds Meet and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

The event will take place between 1st August and 4th August, so you should look out for more news early next month.

Ironically, the platform holder doesn't appear to be attending August's other big gaming convention, Gamescom, which perhaps gives a little insight into where its priorities lie these days.

I suggest reading the latter half of the thread title.
Hardly any games, not "no" games 👀
Also choosing the niche event which caters rather exclusively to the interest of chinese players(aka most likely service stuff or stuff like lost souls aside) over the more main stream event that has the majority of mainstream as target group, which I'm among 😔

They have nothing. This company sucks and they are not even 10% of what they used to be.

fuck even their input during the PS3 era was better than this.

What a shit of a company, thanks to its poor management and wasted years chasing GaaS when its single-player exclusive games are what made them stand out.

All thanks to no competition anymore. if you want a home console, you really don't have a choice ( Nintendo lives in its own bubble, they don't count )

Well look at how black myth wukong number being sold in china, yes everyone want a piece from it, and can't help if japan birth rate on decay, so no new customer to please there

China = Live Service

So you know that Playstation's strategy is still failing with this gaas games.

Factually incorrect: Phantom Blade Zero, Wukong, Tides of Annihilation, Lost Soul Aside, among others.

Besides, Chinese GaaS are single player and bring more money to Sony than what they are losing with their first party GaaS MP failures.

Gamescom 2024: >335K visitors
ChinaJoy 2024: >367K visitors
Which was the niche event, again?
And no, having stuff catering the tastes of Chinese players first and foremost and not yours doesn't mean that they have nothing to show.

Westerners lose their mind when they're not being the focus for once, lmao.

Black Myth sold more than 5m. units on PS5 alone (and more than 20m. on Steam) with the majority of that number possibly coming from China.

That's a significant number that Sony would love to chase.

But, yeah, they don't have too much for the rest of the year aside of GoY.

So did they cancel their appearance at Gamescom this year, or were they never on the books? Because Gamescom is a humungous show and it takes months of planning, so if they were on the books to attend it would've been announced months ago, like it was with Nintendo confirming their attendance and participation earlier this year.

So I'm just trying to understand why Gamescom is being mentioned here as if it's this huge news bomb.

Why go to Gamescom? They have like big game this year left. Is there something else other than Yotei?

They confirmed to have a big presence in TGS too: SIE will have 3 booths (in the general exhibition area, family game area and indie games area).

And well, there will be booths of Kojima Productions (merchandise sales area), ARC System Works (general exhibition area) or Kadokawa (general exhibition area), so they may show something from them even if maybe not stricly gaming related.

It would be great to see there Ghost of Yotei, Marathon, Convallaria, Marvel Tokon and Saros playable, plus some surprise FromSoft announcement/trailer.

Yes, Lost Soul Aside and Convallaria, two Chinese games. Go figure.
Well, and Midnight Murder Club.

Hey, you're right! Surprised to not see any news about that, though I guess it's not as surprising as when they returned as a general exhibitor for the first time in 5 years in 2024.
I will make the thread later. :lollipop_grinning_smiling_eyes:

Great post. They have definitely figured out a winning formula.

I'm not sure how going to ChinaJoy and Gamescom is an either/or situation. I'm glad they're doing a big show there but why the absence at gamescom? People mentioning games this year doesn't make sense what's planned for others this year? It's no different. They could provide some updates on their ongoing projects though. Some Intergalactic gameplay, whatever the f* is going on with Wolverine, maybe even announce Cory's game. They have things to talk about even if some aren't new. Hell MS was showing the same things year after year (then cancelling) so if these Sony games aren't cancelled why don't they at least talk about them. Wtf is going on with Wolverine, is it dead?

It's certainly not a priority for them going to these events anymore, from E3 (ignore the fact that it's now dead) to Gamescom and Paris Game Week.
They keep going to Tokyo Game Show and ChinaJoy, yes, but the former caters to their domestic market, while the latter is having priority due to their current push on China. It is what it is.
Also, don't expect much outside of State of Play nowadays, even Wolverine has a lot of time to show up again if it's still internally planned for late 2026.

The Chinese will get gobbled up by PC and Steam. Lord Gaben is ever hungry.
doesnt mean you cant get a chunk of the market. this thinking is very dumb.
By your logic, there should not be any competitor for every industry, since every market must have monopoly by the same company at some point.
And console was banned in China last time, so is pretty obvious gaming PC is the major platform there.

C'mon, nial stop tripping buddy, you know damn well that the majority of people know about "ChinaJoy" for like two or so years now, while Gamescom has been a main event in the early days of Neogaf even. I was here in 2009 Lurking already, and Gamescom was already well known. ChinaJoy for the Gamers interests(meaning You and Me) are rather niche compared to Gamescom, and all those Games that have been showcased, revealed or Demoed at the Event. You know I'm right buddy, regarding that.
Nobody knew that a "ChinaJoy" even existed 3 years ago, except the Chinese Demographic

Makes sense, when you waste money on overpriced booth prices (I guess China might at least be cheaper per sqm) you rather should do it in a growing market and not in one where you practically already won, gain almost nothing from being there.

Better would be to have good State of plays or some Sony Experiences or whatever they want to call them. Those really sell units, when people all over the world are convinced to get fantastic software, then there is no need for crowded venues with limited demo time to spark interest in a limited number of kinda local people.
