Todays consoles technology are very different than back in the 90s and early 00s
$500-$600 is the reasonable pricepoint if you want to get a decent consoles to compete with high end PC

Just like when Sony warned how the trade war might hike prices, they are playing the PR game, nothing more. They even add "coronoavirus has not affected plans... so far" so they're prepping for that too.

The difference between then and now is that they use now commoditized PC parts, as opposed to specialized custom components.
They'll never compete with high end PCs, and there is no evidence that people are more willing to pay higher prices for a console than they have in the past. In fact, this generation solidified that.

You expect more or less? Lower is always better. Any higher than $499 and either company will have problems moving consoles. If Sony is lower spec'd, they have to go lower. They cant afford to have a $500 console with lower specs against a competitor with higher specs at the same price.

We don't know what those systems are trying to do, but if they hit 2080, that means they hit high-ish end on 2018 cards. Not high-end on 2020. The 2080 is not a new GPU.
Has there been a single successful console that has come out ever at $500? I don't think so. If $400 is impossible for next gen then I predict low sales on next gen.
If Sony was comfortable with $500 then these reports wouldn't be coming out. They know this as much as anyone else.

No, it's really not, and besides, even if it was, that means companies need to cut even more from consoles, because again, people aren't going to spend more on a console just because Sony tells them to. If they did, the PS3 would have been a smash hit at launch. And compete with a high end PC - please. It's not happening. Not even close. Like I said, if Sony was comfortable pricing the PS5 at $600, this article wouldn't mention they're struggling to cut the costs.

Dude, I own a business and work in entertainment as a paid professional. Price isn't the concern. Most people can't say that though. Most people, anything above $500 isn't going to look upon favorably. Not everyone can afford that price point. I can afford it and I'm not willing to spend more than $600 on a gaming console. Its just not that serious to me. Gaming is a luxury. Not a necessity. That's how moat gamers look at gaming.

VR won't be the vocal point of PS5, VR is having a terrific time on PS4, but you have Spider-Man 2, Naughty Dog, more power we've never seen from a console and a new box as well if SONY matches up the price point instead of insane pricing like they did on the PS3 everything will come together, the VR, ray tracing etc.

Yea I dont want to spend 2000 on a good gaming pc. People also forget you need to spend money on a great monitor as well. Thats so much costs. And then its outdated a few years later. If you got the cash and its your hobby, go for it. amazing. But me and my friends dont wanne do that.

I don't see it as an issue, but I think many were expecting Sony to come out swinging again at a $399 US price, undercutting Xbox Series X which will likely cost $500. Since the rumors about Xbox Series X being 12TF vs 9, discussions have broken with some users normalizing the difference, bringing the PS5 up to 10TF and considering the PS5 would cost $100 dollars less, justifying the difference in power.
For most people that won't matter much since it's mostly about exclusives, but for those where power is a big deal and want the best version of multiplats, having both at the same price, but another having 30% more power, could mean a significant difference in value, worse if MS somehow reverses the role and comes out swinging with a $399 price with the more powerful console just like PS4 was last gen, I mean I seriously doubt that, but imo if MS is going all in, this would be the true definition of going all in, but I still see an impact if the price is equal and the power difference is 30%, that's still the same as PS4 vs Xbox One sans Kinect.

I'm not an 'xboy', I'm a realist. Don't have stock in either company so could care less about which one's making more money 'cuz I'm not seeing a dime from either of them xD. DVDs outsold Blu-Ray this year by 16%, go look at the data. I'm sorry any commentary based in realism when it comes to Sony irritates you, but that's not my problem.
PS3 wiped out all PS1 & PS2 profits and the Blu-Ray drive was one of the biggest reasons for that. That's what I mean when I say it was a pyrrhic victory: it came at many heavy losses in other areas. The trajectory looked good for Blu-Ray anyway even if PS3 did not have a unit built-in, because the 360 did not have HD-DVD built-in either, and studios were already backing Blu-Ray moreso without PS3 factoring into the picture.

Agree, the reality is both Sony and MS cant build their consoles just for enthusiasts. They must think about casuals who barely cant spend 399$.
I have paid 599$ for launch PS3 and I still considered it cheap. It was 5-7 years investment, and I could not only play great games but also watch BD movies. Even at 599$ PS3 hardware was limited (RAM, too weak GPU) and now people want to pay 400$ max and they expect high end hardware..... because of course MS and Sony can sell everything at loss

Sony didn’t win last gen. Outselling MS by a few million for bragging rights is no prize given what was lost in exchange.
MS cut Sony’s market share in half, enjoyed double the attach rate, and raked in millions in XBL fees while Sony stood by and watched.
Add up the per unit profit Sony made from those PS3 sales and compare to just the XBL fees alone and it’s clear Sony lost the last gen.
No business would call the PS3 a success and if Sony launches late they are risking the same outcome with PS5. They won’t do that.

Agree, there are informations supporting both (single and double digits), so nothing is certain until MS and Sony will finally reaveal specs. But no matter if next gen consoles will be 8TF or 12TF developers willl still make great games on both.More or less in line with what I've been expecting out of them. I do think the relative lack of transparency is not a good sign, tbh.
Probably worrying for some of the TFWarBoyz would be the cooling mention in all of that. I hope my theory/speculation holds out but saying the cooling is "very unusual" actually doesn't give too much hope on that front given what we've already seen with devkits and what a certain leak and successive benchmarks are generally showing. Only thing that can really assure me of a best-case scenario on that front is a new benchmark datamine with a somewhat beefier Oberon...we still got 'till end of March
I'm still #Team10.4_11 but I'm also covering my ass with a soft #Team9.2 because let's face it there's still a good bit of circumstantial coincidences and evidence tracing a while back that can support that one as well :S
All of that said, at the end of the day I don't think anyone should be obsessing over TFs so damn much. These systems are going to have some amazing stuff coming for next-gen and you would be surprised how often throughout console history systems that were considered the "weaker" ones could turn up arguably some of the most amazing looking games of that generation. Take PS2 for example. Generally outclassed by Gamecube and Xbox, but had the best-looking sim racers of that gen in GT3 and GT4, hands down. Best-looking JRPGs too in FFX (at the time it came out), and FFXII. Arguably the best-looking platformers that gen in games like Jak 3, Ratchet & Clank etc.
Basically, you don't need the most powerful console to have at least some of the best-looking games. You just need a system that's relatively capable and a flock of developers who can make it sing. Sony already has that with their 1st party these days, and PS5 and XSX will be competitive with each other regardless of where each one falls on the tech side of things. And PS still has the majority support from 3rd-parties, something (along with pushing harder on 1st-party content) MS has to up their game on, and I expect them to.
So yeah, I know a lot of people aren't going to like my take on some of the stuff I've just mentioned, but hopefully you also see that I'm coming at it from the bigger picture, and that power really doesn't mean everything. Hasn't Nintendo been consistently proving that for over a decade by now?
When it comes to your GT3 and GT4 example. I think from technical point of view PGR2 or Ralli Sport 2 was on totally different league, but GT3-GT4 looked more pleasing to my eyes because of realistic art direction and interesting tricks. For example cars in gran turismo had very dark windows, so polyphony could build car models with much less polygons, and these cars still looked good.

Rtx 2070 is 500usd alone... Whole console could even be 1000 of they really wanted it. Even smartphones are over 1k now... But my view is skewed over pc gaming and again spending 2k for new parts.... I swear I've had pc's for my whole life... It's the only thing I know and I grew to hate it

400$ is extremely cheap price (these days many people can buy 4x PS4P with their single salary) but I think even 599$ would be still cheap considering what people get (that's 5-7 years investment after all).
