Sony officially launches PlayMemories Online (The Sony Cloud)

I'm not sure how wise it was to launch on the same day as Google Drive, but Sony has officially launched the final version of their PlayMemories cloud service. I wasn't the biggest fan of the name when they launched their first "PlayMemories" app for the XMB, but at least people can pronounce the name of this service.

So far it looks like a pretty standard/basic cloud-based storage solution for photos and videos. Anyone with a PSN/SEN account gets 5GB of storage, and it looks to be web-based except for mobile devices which get their own dedicated apps. No XMB app yet it appears!!!

While Sony may be a tad late to make a dent in this space, I'm glad to see that this combined with some of the other rumors about Sony cameras has them realizing that people are tired of the archaic way of taking and sharing photos. I have a NEX-5N with a couple of lenses, yet if I need to take a quick picture of something 9 times out of 10 I take it with my iPhone because after snapping the photo there is almost zero effort involved in sharing the picture on the Internet. If Sony starts slapping WiFi in their higher end cameras like rumors are suggesting, that would help keep them ahead of Canikon in regards to to innovating in an otherwise pretty stagnant segment of the market.

So if they're giving us 5gb of free storage, why can't we get 5gb of save game storage on PS+? We're paying for that shit and it's only 150mb.

wouldnt use this service as a primary back up. if it doesn't live up to sony's userbase expectations, they could just close it with a days notice.

Hey remember the time Kevin tried to do that wheelie and broke his back?

PlayMemories

The thing that this service brings to the playing field that is not available from Dropbox, Box.net, SkyDrive, Google Drive, etc is:

Native PS app? Gives exclusive access to a 60M installed userbase. I don't know of anyone who uses Dropbox via their PS3 browser (largely because the browser has been garbage until a month ago... But still, it's not an intuitive use of Dropbox).

Oh, you meant real features. Nothing then, lol.

Maybe Sony are ahead of the game though!

This could be the beginning of a Total Recall service where you can buy memories that aren't your own.

This is why Sony annoy me these days; their branding is horrible.

The lack of "box" or "drive" in the name it seems. Not that it matters since "PlayMemories Online" is god awful.

You have to pay for the fucking PS3 app. Fuck that shit.

Yeah, should have called it PlayDrive or something along those lines. At least people would then realise what the hell it is.

If it was more tied around the Playstation I could see the jokes of "yeah because playstations will be a distant memory in the future". But because its not I'm disapointed.

It looks useful though I guess if you have a playstation but what does it offer that other services don't?

I thought this was a photo editing service when it was first announced.

I'm glad they've done this even if it is just photos / videos;

I have an xperia phone and ps3 and, maybe with apple conditioning, wanted them to work together in some way so this goes towards that

but i agree, the title is god awful, for some reason sony always mess up in the branding department; wonder if that was part of the 10000 layoffs

You don't have to pay for the app to use the actual service though, the app is a suite of tools for photos and video.
