Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Should time for a big update on FFVII Remake as well.

Sure, but we're talking about first-party stuff.

Naughty Dog had hinted pretty consistently a couple years back that they had something else in the works while developing Uncharted 4. Obviously TLOU2 pre-production.

Part of me thinks we could see a teaser trailer for it at E3 similar to Uncharted's at E3 2014.

Other than that, Sucker Punch and Japan Studio, Sony's line-up is pretty much accounted for.

Whatever they're doing (and I'd rather have Savage Starlight first if possible) I hope they reveal it like six months before launch and we get a short but intense marketing period, like Fallout 4. I'm so bored with 18+ month hype cycles.

The studio that made that game said they are not looking to make exclusives any more so it's doubtful.

Yeah, it's a shame they wanted to move on as UD was amazing. Hopefully Sony will find another high-quality studio to make a sequel. I think Climax who made Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii would be perfect.

Next year (not necessarily E3) we will probably hear about Sucker Punch's next game, Bloodborne 2, maybe something else early from Japan Studio, lots more info on God of War, Dreams, Spider-Man, Days Gone etc, and maybe North-West Studio's first game. Can't really think of any others we haven't heard from.

Edit - maybe a new game from Arrowhead (Helldivers) if they've continued that partnership.

I think they will. They seem to be hiring and expanding the studio even more since the game launched so someone must be backing them up. Its got to be either them or Warner (or both). Helldivers looks like it was somewhat successful and I think Sony will want to keep this relationship going.

Also some other minor stuff should be revelaed next year lke Pixelopus new project, Ovosonico PS4 game and more Santa Monica xdev projects since most of the previous ones are out now (maybe some of these might even be at this year's PSX)

I really want games like Detroit and Until Dawn on PSVR. They are a perfect fit for the medium imo.

With Quantic Dreams and Supermassive Games hard at work on their current/new projects, North West studio appears to be my best hope at the moment.

Im surprised we havent heard anything about sucker punch for a while. Second son came out spring 2014, its been 2 1/2 years already!

I want a new IP from Sucker punch, I want them to ascend and get more recognition

Im really interested in Sony japan's AAA new JRPG with universal appeal. Thats what I really want to see.

I also want Cambridge to ascend to greatness just like guerrilla has with horizon. I believe in cambridge, killzone mercenary was great IMO However.... i dont want another killzone... I wish they would work on Resistance reboot instead. go back to the fall of man feel

Until the reviews are out, they have not ascended to anything.

It is looking good though :)

What is taking so long for ND to announce the Uncharted 4 SP DLC, though? It's been close to 6 months since the game released. Also, I'll be surprised if we don't see their next game at E3 next year.

Left Behind was announced in November during Spike's PS4 launch program. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see U4's announced next month at PSX. You have to remember that ND begins working on their single player content after they've completed the main game. That's why it takes some time for them to announce and show that content.

Expecting Naughty Dog to reveal another game in 2017 is highly unrealistic imo.
Also PSX is around the corner, probably the most obvious place to reveal SP DLC.

Hmm, why? Do you really believe ND will take three years from Uncharted 4 to release their next game? As mentioned in this thread, ND were hinting long before Uncharted 4 even released that they were working on two other projects as well. In addition, they now have 300 people in the studio. I find it really hard to believe that all of them were working on Uncharted 4. Just my two cents, at least.

Makes sense. Still, with how long it's taking (relatively), I almost think that it was cancelled, though, haha.

First time seeing this thread, and I just read through every single page lol. The diversity and focus on ambitious single player games is what has made me a lifelong playstation gamer.

This stuff about a AAA JRPG from Sony needs to be true, and I'm 99% sure Sucker Punch is doing a new IP. If it were a new Infamous I think it would have been announced at E3. Plus weren't there rumors they were doing some sci-fi/space game? Or am I just talking out of my ass here

Druckmann did say all 300 were on UC4 towards the end of its development. ND is not a studio that will rush to ship a game. They'll ship when the game is ready and up to their standards. That's why I wouldn't be surprised if their next game is announced for 2018, but then ultimately delayed to 2019.

Well, yeah, I mean, towards the end of development, it makes sense to have everyone in the studio working on the game. I meant more throughout the years.

Didn't Nolan North recently said ND still don't know what they are going to do with U4 story dlc.

We still have to hear about Uncharted SP DLC. I fear that will be an "announcement" at PSX.
Likely. Left Behind was announced at Spike's PS4 launch event. Uncharted 4 was teased there as well and they've shown off something around that time every following year since then.

I hasn't heard that. But I really wouldn't be surprised if Drake isn't involved in it at all.

Because as much as I loved UC4, it's not an experience I have any interest going back to. I want ND to put that series to rest and completely move on.

They tried something different with Left Behind and i'd expect the same here. Half of Left Behind was without combat and the other half introduced encounters that involved both infected and hunters which changed things up quite a bit. This will be their last piece of Uncharted story content, so I expect them to go out with a bang.

Man, I feel like most will strongly disagree with you. Especially since Left Behind was so damn good.

U4 DLC will prob open the PSX keynote keeping the tradition, since PSX 2014 and 2015 opened with Uncharted 4 gameplay

Yeah, the diversity in their lineup is a huge reason why I've always enjoyed Sony's first-party output. That really seemed to snowball towards the end of the PS2 gen and right through the PS3's lifespan.

Some of us have hoped/assumed Naughty Dog will be making a sci-fi game next (Savage Starlight), but I've not heard anything about Sucker Punch making a sci-fi game. Do you have a link?

Idk I remember seeing someone post something about it in a previous playstation thread (the ps meeting one maybe). IIRC it was your typical "my friend works at the studio" so I highly doubt it's reliable at all but I could see it

And a ND sci-fi game in the vain of Blade Runner would be incredible. I would rather have that than TLOU2 tbh

Why is sony not building studios in japan and hiring developers who used to work in the biggest gaming publishers in Japan like Square Enix and Capcom? I am sure there are game developers who are willing to create AAA games.( one of them is Yasuhisa Kawamura )

They don't need to - Japan Studio is Sonys biggest studio with around 300-400 Employees.

However The Problem over the past years was(or atleast last generation) that they didn't really have a good organisation at that studio - actually it sounds like a huge chaos and mess

"The thing I was shocked by was the number of titles in production," he said of when he first arrived. "That completely blew my mind." At that time, there were 40-something titles in production, and the environment was, what Becker called, "a free-for-all."

Allan Becker became the new Ceo in 2013 and he made clear, that he wants to make Japan Studio relevant on a globale scale

For Japan Studio to be relevant globally in two and a half years.
Becker wants Japan Studio to be back in a big way.

Even tough its nearly 2017 i think we didn't see the new Japan Studio yet or rather what Becker meant with relevant globally
Knack was a rushed out Launch Title to expand the portfolio
Last Guardian a lastgen project and Gravity Rush 2 probably to not waste the IP since the vita is dead

None of these titles really match the words of Allan Becker

Which is why im really looking forward to what theyre brewing over there and after TLG and GR2 are out it's finally time...to see those projects that shall make Japan Studio relevant again

That AAA JRPG for an global audience would pretty much fit to what Becker said.

This comes off pretty condescending. Who's to say they didn't think Gravity Rush 2 or TLG would "make Japan Studio relevant again"? Instead of waiting around and hoping for "that game that will magically make them relevant again" (as if that's an easy feat), maybe you should just hope for some good games from them?

Yeah I'm expecting a big announcement from Japon Studio next year.

Do we know how many people are working on GR2 ?

I said this a page or two back but I really wouldn't expect a new AAA game from Japan Studio for another couple of years. Based on what we've seen, Japan Studio has two AAA projects in full production at a time (Knack + Puppeteer in 2013 -> The Last Guardian + Gravity Rush 2 in 2016/17), so logically their next two shouldn't come out till like 2019.

I could be wrong and they could have a third team in full production but I don't think we've seen any evidence of that.

Unless of course you're including external projects in that, then yeah, Bloodborne 2 is pretty likely.

given the exposure and marketing both of those games get (especially GR2) i don't think so

i never said that and that wasn't the intention of my post
However, by working on a big AAA Game (and thats what im expecting based on Verendus words) there is a higher chance that it could happen (being a big studio on a global scale)

, maybe you should just hope for some good games from

Believe me i do - TLG will be my highlight alongside FF15 this year - GR2 is also a must buy

Sony's already put more effort into marketing TLG than they have for most of their games this gen, including Bloodborne.

But even if they weren't, you really think Sony's going to put a big marketing budget behind a JRPG?

Well it does come off dismissive of the two games they've got coming out in just the next few months. But as someone who was super hyped over White Knight Chronicles before launch, I'd recommend lowering your expectations a bit.

Could Guerilla Cambridge be working on a SOCOM? It's a multi million selling franchise... what have their job offers been looking like exactly?

As much as I love Naughty Dog, I'm actually very curious to see what Sucker Punch is doing.

Will they showcase a new game at PSX? They haven't released anything after First Light, and that was back in August 2014. YES! AUGUST 2014!

So yeah. 2.5 years later, I'd expect something at least at PSX this year.

I think we'll see the new Sucker Punch game next year; probably at E3, for a mid-late 2018 release most likely. Assuming they're making a new IP then 4-ish years seems like a minimum given how devs seem to be turning things around this gen. Although I am excited to see their tech and engine, because Second Son was a stunning game so early on in the generation.

Nah, E3 2017 is way more likely.

Certainly bigger marketing than their current Games, Yes i do believe that. (AAA JRPG - Global Audience - Sonys last effort in trying to do this)
Time will tell

you sure you're not mistaking me with someone else? :)

This isn't the PS1 or even PS2 era, outside of mainline FF's and Pokemon, JRPGs aren't that big worldwide.

You read that wrong, I was referring to myself.

Anyway, so Helldivers just received a Pro patch. Seems like an indication that Arrowhead will continue working with Sony.

Thanks for updating it but an extremely minor thing to change, it still says GT Sport is releasing in November 2016 in the OP.

I don't really understand the current Santa Monica status, does it mean that they haven't even started the game yet and the demo won't be included in the game?

Doesn't seem like anyone knows besides that post about SSM more or less having scrapped the game and restarted. Hope it isn't true, as God of War is one of like three announced games on OPs I actually want and care about :/

No I think they are well into developing the game, it's just the gameplay demo shown at E3 (as confirmed by the creative director) won't be exactly how it unfolds in the final game, and they spent a significant amount of time (as any developer does when preparing an E3 vertical slice of their game) preparing that sequence to be shown. Now (my interpretation is) they are back to being fully focused on making the final game hence no showing at this year's PSX.

Demo was made for the presentation, will be different in the real game, game didn't start from Scratch, they are just doing things right.

Cory Barlog said it was BS, so I guess it's up to who you believe: An unverified poster on GAF or the director of the game.

Pretty much. If anyone wants to know why they'd do it this way, google the Cerny Method.
