Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I remember bruce and other insiders were hinting that GG Cambridge is making next killzone

Yes and according to job offers, they are working on a high profile multimillion selling franchise

Guerrilla’s Cambridge Studio (UK) is looking for an experienced Audio programmer to work on forthcoming projects in a high profile, multi-million selling franchise.

The successful candidate should have at least 3 years experience in the industry and possess excellent working knowledge of game audio systems. Ideally they should be a gamer who is driven to make the best sounding games available on any platform

If Sony were to have another shooter franchise, they would need to focus on a completely different approach. With the World War setting slowly coming back in demand, by the time a game like that hits full production, it might be too late as I feel as though Call of Duty itself will be going back to WW2 very soon.

Being different is important here because the FPS market is over-saturated. Sure Guerilla Cambridge could work on a new Killzone but that series has proven to not jive with the mainstream and not many care about it anymore after Killzone 3 and Shadow Fall. They would have to reboot it entirely or make it a VR game to bring back interest. I think for Cambridge to succeed, they should continue to support PSVR for now, (VR-enabled Killzone or whatever it may be). Say what you want, but Sony needs a good first party studio to support VR, just like they needed them for the Vita and PSP.

I'm starting to believe that those JRPGs from Sony might not happen at all this generation. We're about to hit 2017 and if this generation is expected to last till 2020, we have enough announced games and potential sequels to fill up the gaps till 2020 as is. Given Sony's track record of delaying games this generation, I highly doubt we'll get more than everything they've announced thus far plus sequels for Ratchet, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Gran Turismo and Until Dawn along with Sucker Punch's new IP before 2020 and potentially the PS5 launch. I really don't think we'll get more than that this generation and it absolutely sucks.

I'd be very conservative to be honest and even if one of the JRPGs make it, doubt we'll see it before 2019 at the earliest.

Best wishes.

I wouldn't mind another Killzone, but I'm also kinda tired of all the sci-fi shooters. I'd love it if Killzone got rebooted into something that resembles the Jinroh concept that many people thought Killzone copied the Helghast from, as in a more WW1/WW2 alternate history vibe instead of sci-fi.

Or just give me a TPS Killzone.

There is no need for anything Killzone. Guerrilla Games moved on and is creating an awesome new IP with HORIZON Zero Dawn. Cambridge Studio aka Guerrilla Cambridge is a different studio. Let them make their own IPs like RIGS.

What Sony needs is a new First-Person-Shooter IP. We already had 4 Killzone games on home consoles and two Killzone games on handhelds.
Resistance is dead.

Time for a new SONY FPS IP.

I'm usually all pro new IPs but in this case I feel that instead of getting a new FPS IP with the same issues Killzone had we would be much better off with them rebooting Killzone with specific focus on improving the issues the franchise had, namely the story and characters. Basically they should TLoU the fuck out of Killzone franchise while keeping the gameplay core more or less the same as it was already very solid. They can also try moving it into open world although I would prefer them not to as this will inevitable lead to adding RPG elements and I'm not sure that it's what I would want in a Killzone game.

I really don't want to see much more from Killzone for a while. If they want to bring back an online multiplayer shooter experience I hope it will be SOCOM or Warhawk. Heck I'd even prefer resistance over Killzone.

I agree with everything but open world. That's a direction I definitely don't want to see the series going. I'd love to see them build on the foundations of KZ2, the variety and audiovisual style of SF, and the OWL gameplay mechanics, while keeping the overall experience coherent. Improve on the story, keep the stealth and rail sections away, and either decrease the amount of defense sections, or make them more enjoyable. The characters, like Maya and Radec, have been pretty good, but I can't stand Rico. Those are the only issues I've had with the series. I'd hate to see a rerun of what happened to Resistance with the 2nd entry, when the developers seemingly paid more attention to what those who didn't like the original wanted.

Yeah, I remember them saying that too. It makes sense that they would be talking about Killzone.

I agree. Get a good writer on board (the plot/writing in KZ Mercenary was still shit), make sure their level design is on top form and carry over the things that worked from the previous games, and I think they'd have a winner. I like a lot of stuff about Killzone - the idea of humanity fighting an interstellar war with a bitter, twisted version of themselves is really intriguing - I like the industrial steel design, the ships and drones and sci-fi angle is really well done, and although it doesn't bear much in common with the previous games, I really like the super sci-fi glass and neon design of Shadow Fall.

I really don't want to see much more from Killzone for a while. If they want to bring back an online multiplayer shooter experience I hope it will be SOCOM or Warhawk. Heck I'd even prefer resistance over Killzone.

I would also like a new Resistance game - I felt like Insomniac just found their groove with the third game before the series was shitcanned.

I agree with all of this, and I also wouldn't want it to go open world. Keep it as a good linear sci-fi shooter, definitely keep the OWL and the Van-guards from Mercenary, and I would love to have a section in a proper battle between the Helghast and Vektans. Like, dozens if not hundreds of characters in each sides, with dropships exploding overhead while massive capitol ships exchange fire higher up.

Media Molecule now have a small satellite studio in central Brighton.

Introducing Mm Brighton!
Every day for many years a group of molecules have travelled between Guildford and Brighton. Through rain, shine, snow, good trains and bad our merry little group have been getting up early and making tracks to Guildford! But after many years of these big efforts we decided to start looking for a space down in Brighton to reduce the amount of time they were spending commuting and the good news is that we have found a space.

The Brighton space is a light and airy studio set within Lighthouse, a multi-purpose working and arts venue situated in a former printworks in the heart of the North Laine. We share this space with six other creative organisations who all work from the suites housed within the building. It’s fantastic to be working alongside such a varied mix of creative, inspiring companies. You can read more about our new neighbours here:

So far Guerilla Cambridge has knocked it out of the park with RIGS, now if Guerilla Amsterdam can do the same with Horizon: Zero Dawn, that'll be one hell of a combo.

I'm wondering what kind of new IP Sucker Punch would do. I can't see them doing anything more realistic than Infamous, and IMHO I'd rather not see a TPS from them. Maybe something more "fantastical," like Sly?

It could be some something completely unexpected (like ND and TLOU) or something in the same stealthy style like Sly and inFamous. I could see them doing another third person game in a fantasy or futuristic setting. I'd love to see them do something similar to Prey 2 but in third person.

They could also do licensed property. Marvel is serious about having quality video games now (as evident with the upcoming Spider-Man game) and Sucker Punch could probably do a kickass Iron Man or Hulk game.

Man if it weren't for all the licensing BS at Marvel. Sucker Punch could make one hell of an X-Men game.

Oh man, I would be so happy with Wipeout HD Fury Remaster. I was never very good at it, but absolutely adored the game. I'd love another chance to beat that **** Zico!

That's good news, because if they're expanding then the studio's future is probably secured after Dreams. I'd love another platformer or adventure from them though, like Tearaway.

Sucker Punch is probably a lock for E3 2017 right? It'll have been 3+ years since the release of ISS by then.

I think so; yeah. I saw some footage of Infamous: First Light played at 4K on PS4 Pro recently, and it made me realise that their next game is going to blow sock off. Looking at what they did with a launch window title, they are going to make the hardware sing with their next game.

It has to be a new IP if its taken them this long. Then again look at GOW.

That's what I am thinking too. I'm sure I'd read the studio in the past talk about sticking with Infamous in the long-term, but then if Sony have Spider-Man coming that will fill the open world superhero slot nicely, and I expect we're in for a trilogy of Spidey games.

Man if it weren't for all the licensing BS at Marvel. Sucker Punch could make one hell of an X-Men game.

I would not be surprised if Sony has picked up other Marvel licenses given how popular the superhero genre is in movies right now. I would bloody love to see a Sucker Punch Iron Man or Captain America game. I'd love a Cap game with the same attention to detail and production levels as the Batman Arkham games.

Why is sony not building studios in japan and hiring developers who used to work in the biggest gaming publishers in Japan like Square Enix and Capcom? I am sure there are game developers who are willing to create AAA games.( one of them is Yasuhisa Kawamura )

Yeah, I'd love them to put a bit more effort in with new studios in Japan, central Europe (maybe Poland?) and Canada. I know it's probably too late now, but they should have saved United Front Games. The two had a history together, and UFG could have produced a new karting game for Sony, or a city-based action game.

Yeah, if Infamous is taking a break then this is what I'm expecting to happen. Like Spider-Man, it just seems like a win-win for both companies. Marvel gets a quality developer working on one of their properties, while Sony gets another Marvel exclusive.

Because while that may seem like a great move as a fan, it would cost a shitload of money and who knows if it'd pay off. It's a LOT easier to let those developers found their own studios and then partner up with them if they have a good pitch, like what Sony are doing with Kojima Productions (and did with Game Republic way back when).

Man, I wish Sony Japan would give us a AAA jrpg. We probably know the least about that studio and what it's doing. Also, what realistically could Sony announce at next e3? Most of their first parties have something that they're working on that is already announced. I can only think of sucker punch and maybe a couple of third parties atm.

The next From Software exclusive is the only thing that immediately comes to mind, but you know they will have some suprises.

Next year (not necessarily E3) we will probably hear about Sucker Punch's next game, Bloodborne 2, maybe something else early from Japan Studio, lots more info on God of War, Dreams, Spider-Man, Days Gone etc, and maybe North-West Studio's first game. Can't really think of any others we haven't heard from.

Edit - maybe a new game from Arrowhead (Helldivers) if they've continued that partnership.

Should time for a big update on FFVII Remake as well.

Naughty Dog had hinted pretty consistently a couple years back that they had something else in the works while developing Uncharted 4. Obviously TLOU2 pre-production.

Part of me thinks we could see a teaser trailer for it at E3 similar to Uncharted's at E3 2014.

Other than that, Sucker Punch and Japan Studio, Sony's line-up is pretty much accounted for.

What's the likelihood of getting a until dawn sequel. Starting playing it again, and I kind of want more of that. Also wish it would get a pro update to fix some of the jankiness.

I feel like every other page someone asks what Sucker Punch is doing, which I guess follows because every OTHER other page is where we say supposedly they're doing "Sentinel", a new IP?

Either way I'm pretty hyped, Second Son was so good.

The studio that made that game said they are not looking to make exclusives any more so it's doubtful.
