Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I think it might be useful to have a (somewhat) comprehensive list of upcoming PS4 exclusives here for easy reference, and this seems like the best thread for it. Let me know if there's anything that should be changed or added.

This list will be updated as games and release dates are announced and changed. Notable timed exclusives are included. PlayStation VR games, with one or two exceptions, are not. Release dates are North American and, where noted, estimates.

Wow...This put things into perspective....Why I've been getting PS for 4 gens now, and Nintendo as my secondary. I hope most of these turn out fantastic.

Tks for the effort.

Toyama gave some small info to Famitsu about the directtion of his next game, not a surprise but it sounds like it wont be Gravity Rush but still in the action adventure genre

Toyama want to make his next game by using good points from the same team. His new game may have very big diff in direction w/ ACT-ADV genre

I wrote up one for Xbox earlier to express my disappointment, so I did one for PlayStation too, summarizing what I think they've done well/poorly in regards to their announcements LTD.

Good: Scale & scope of AAA games announced are impressive YoY. New AAA IP every year. Supplemented by a broad array of unique, smaller scope titles.
Bad: Games's announcement-to-release cycle are lengthy, and delays are frequent. 2015/2016 shows decline of smaller new game announcements, in favour of more smaller VR announcements. Also, a sizable amount of the AAA games feel like they occupy the "cinematic third-person action adventure" space.

Sony seems to gave up on producing small/weird titles. I don't like the trend too, I think those smaller weird titles are major pillar of SIE.

I worry them skipping Gamescom/PGW last year to be a trend. That conference has always been where they announce their quirky weird games, so if they abandon dem smaller games in favour of VR games and remasters....

I don't get it.

2013 and 2014 were bad cause no big titles announcements. 2015 and 2016 bad cause less smaller titles.

I'll bet this year we will have more smaller announcements again its always about the right time to do it.

Are there any numbers out there as to how profitable Sony's game development wing is to them?

I'm kind of worried Sony will at some point spin down their game development in reaction to what Microsoft is doing. It seems to be me that all their need to make interesting games stemmed mostly from having to recover from the PS3 launch, in a way. Now that they're back on top though, I'm looking for other incentives for them to keep on making the games they're currently making.

I'm an unapologetic pessimist though, so I might jut be imagining things.

I think it's good to have the right balance. My preferred would be that every year should at least have:

a. 3-4 AAA announcements.
b. At least 1 new AAA IP.
c. 4-5 AA smaller/weird announcements.
d. At least 2 new AA IPs.
e. At least 1 of those AA announcements must be almost "AAA"-tier. Something like Wild or Rime where it's clearly high production values, even if cheaper than AAA.

And Sony isn't following this by a long shot, but also:

f. No announcement should be >18 months from release. If announced at E3, the planned release window is fall next year latest.
g. At least one of your AAA announcements should be slated for same calendar year.

Not just announcements, walk away from Wattam, Rime, What remains of Edith Finch, F2P experiment failure and San Diego layoff, closure of (smaller)U.K. Studios etc.
All point to SIE stop making bet on smaller weird titles. Tokyo Jungle 2 dream is dead.
Maybe they feel like indie already fill that void, so they step out.

This happens after Shawn Layden is now the chairman and SIEA is seen to be a division that cares not for games that aren't "AAA" looking at their lack of marketing for Until Dawn and Gravity Rush 2...

:p

All reasonable points. But what other manufacturer does this?

I mean delay for big AAA is a problem, but you have to understand the teams are still working in new games.

Studio Japan, for example, is one of the first party that always bring us new smaller ips. We already know they are working on several new projects. This is the year they'll introduce us more announcements since almost all their games are launched.

XDEV should have news this year too. We know Housemarque will bring Matterfall and Nex machine this year (at least I hope so).

We have Gio working to get new and different games for Playstation.

What I mean is Sony is already at full speed right now. I don't think it's viable to have everything in a single year, that's all.

But do you have information on what really happened? it's not like those games aren't coming to PS4 anymore.

Like I said as long the developments teams are launching their games they'll go to another project.

I wish someone would approach SIE representatives about this smaller games issue. Sony does seem to be leaving that approach,

SMS which was their tentpole for funding and publishing digital games like this does not have one single external project atm, and their ExDev director (Nathan Gary) has left for awhile and is heading Annapurna Int now. And add that to the fact that we had no announcements of projects of this scope last year, only some VR stuff

I guess indie dev and publishing on consoles is so much easier now that PS4 already gets a bunch of games like this, with no cost to Sony anyway. I doubt most of these games gave big profits to Sony in the past (Journey is the only one that comes to mind now tbh)

Wait, what about WRoEF?

oh nvm, that they aren't being published by SSM anymore and got an outside publisher

TLoU: Part 2. 2018.

Calling it now!
I think (and hope, to be honest) that you're wrong. The difference between what we would get in, say, October 2018 vs. what we would get in May or June 2019 could be pretty massive with a game like this. I'm very interested to see what they do with Part II, but I also want them to take their time with it.

So I'm genuinely curious about what's going to happen to the Killzone franchise now that Guerilla Cambridge has been closed.

Guerilla Amsterdam is by all accounts prioritizing Horizon as its new franchise it will be developing for the foreseeable future.

Cambridge was rumored to be working on a new Killzone game. The studio got hit with heavy layoffs in 2014, I don't know if that would have impacted their Killzone game (if they even were developing one). Obviously Cambridge would end up releasing RIGS... and well, yeah.

Shadowfall sold decently (going by Sony's PR), and it's an FPS franchise (which are still very marketable). Even though I'm not particularly a fan of the series, I'm still wondering what's going to happen too it.

The closure of Guerilla Games is not a good sign and lets face it, Playstation doesnt have a great reputation for trying to salvage their flailing accessories.

They'll fight like hell to save a console, but not anything else.
Are people ignoring that they actually built a new studio from the ground up for their VR headset?

Guerrilla have two lead creative teams, they'll probably make another Killzone between Horizon and the inevitable Horizon 2.

And I think Cambridge working on a new Killzone was more hope than actual rumour. Repeat a wish enough times and some people start believing it's a rumour (also see: Japan Studio JRPG).

I wonder, is psvr still a thing?

Yes, if it wasn't they probably would've shut down their Manchester and London studios too. I doubt they'll do any high production value games like RIGS again though.

Been playing bloodborne again, and I really wish they end up doing a sequel to that when From has time.

Damn, I don't mean to do this to you but that's an opinion I CANNOT get behind. I'd much rather see Fromsoftware release an Armored Core as great as Dark Souls/Bloodborne

anybody know what's Sony doing with Freedom Wars & Soul Sacrifice? Can't imagine them just abandoning those ip's, they sold relatively well on Vita iirc.

They did, but both could be described as Hunter-esque titles, and that's a genre deeply rooted in handhelds. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they're just trying to figure out how to really introduce console players to the genre since its one that really hasn't gotten a lot of attention since MH made the move to portables.

Remaster freedom wars ala gravity rush?

There is an interesting discussion that can be derived from the Horizon vs Zelda thread from the perspective about marketing's awareness and attention grab of major games competing for your attention on their previews, advertising, reviews, etc at the same time...

But that is not a discussion that anyone is interested in having at that thread. And it's not a topic that one should overthink about.

What you don't think Sony should push back horizon Because of Zelda!?

I do actually think there's a discussion to be had here. I wouldn't push the game back, rather I'd bring it forward if there's any possibility. The problem is that Horizon is scheduled to launch on the same week as the Switch and Zelda, and while the PS4 install base vastly outstrips that of the Switch's, the problem is that all media attention will be focused on the new console (naturally), and Horizon is in danger of becoming an afterthought.

We already had this discussion in this very thread so I'll politely bow out if that's alright. Horizon will be fine

This will have zero impact. To give you an example, The Last of Us launched during an E3 week, where presumably these media channels you're talking about are already saturated with news about a thousand different games. A new console launching that's looking to sell a maximum of 2 million consoles in its first month, according to production figures, poses no threat to a game launching on an already established console with a 50 million strong userbase, along with having already established media channels by the way, like Sony's blog/new letters/youtube channel, PS4 specific youtube channels and website, ...

Also, let's not forget, if there's any serious demand for the Switch, it WILL be severely supply constrained.

Man it will already be 3 years since InFamous SS released, time flies. I'm ready to see what Sucker Punch announces. It would be cool if their new IP is a Marvel game like Ironman or something.
