Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

It's a PlayStation exclusive game series, but the Omega Collection is not in first-party development
since the WipEout developer was closed in 2012. The Studio developing the Omega Collection is a
third-party studio.

This also applies to Crash Bandicoot. Its a PlayStation exclusive games series formerly developed by
Naughty Dog. But the developer of the Crash N-sane Trilogy is Vicarious Visions and part of Activision.
This means the N-Sane Trilogy is in third-party development too.

If the developer is not part of Sony in any way its exclusive but not a first-party game regardless of the IP.

First-Party means the publisher is the hardware maker. Third party means licensee. That's the cleanest definition.

The developer being owned or partially owned or not-owned doesn't mean anything. SONY could own or partially own a developer, yet a licensee could publish the game.

Both, the Crash Remaster and WipEout are not first party.
The Crash remasters are developed by Vicarious Visions and the WipEout remasters are developed by Clever Beans and EPOS.

But Locoroco, Patapon and Rapappa the Rapper are pretty much first party (Japan Studio), yes. I'll have that in mind. Thanks for the note!

Wipeout is 1st party, is one of Sony older franchises dude.

@Playtstation seems tweet Nioh every day, I think Sony treat Nioh as first party?
And they give Nioh-Bundle in Asia, it's a great deal.

Zombie Taxi Driver in VR looked so cool.. But I dont understand this move, Unfinished Swan, Bound etc. were great games. Maybe they want focus on AAA Games.

My suspicion is the following.

a. The rise of indie-games and more publishers embracing indies ( especially those with high production values ) has weakened the position of Sony's previously exclusive quirky offerings, now that many other indies are offering them.

b. The difficulty in having a stand-out indie darling. For all of Sony's quirky experiments last-gen, really only few stand out like Journey. As situation (a) amplifies, the expectation for more games to be like Journey heightens, and it's really really difficult to be another one of those games.

c. Funding has shifted from AA-games to VR-games. If I look at the announcement portfolio of Sony's games in last two years, the decline of AA-games and the pull-back for them largely coincides with the investment in PSVR titles. In other words ,money that used to go to games like Wattam are placed in VR projects. One side suffer for the other side to expand.

d. Increased focus on AAA. As (a) and (b) take hold, that means more than ever the AAA offerings are what's priority, and given that budgets aren't infinite, a larger emphasis on AAA automatically means that investments that used to be for smaller games suffer proportionality.

Well, they're publishing it in the west, so yes? It's a good-looking game which will probably do pretty well in reviews and should appeal the considerably-sized Souls audience.

Not just west, they publish Nioh except Japan.
Asia also love this kind of game , bloodborne sold hundreds of thousands here

OP you are missing: V! What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? R. It is a VR game being made by Japan Studio and Acquire.

You're right but it's actually called "V! No Heroes Allowed! R!" It's weird how many people never caught on that the name changed once Sony started localising it themselves.

While we're at it, the OP is also missing StarBlood Arena (by WhiteMoon Dreams) and WipEout Omega Collection (by Clever Beans). Probably worth including Parappa, LocoRoco and Patapon too.

Less then a month away from Horizon ;).

Been a long road since E3 2015 but it looks like its going to be well worth the wait.

I have a question, SSM still hiring for GoW as we speak, does this mean game still very far off?
I remember Naughty Dog was still hiring for UC4 in early 2015 and the game was done in early 2016 (went gold in March) so it depends how far off you deem "very far off". Because of that example I think it could still come out in early 2018 with some new hires coming in now.

No, pretty much every studio of SSM's size is constantly hiring.

I know he wasn't the lead writer on it and it's a team effort (especially working with HBO/GRR Martin) but urgh at Game of Thrones. That game was so bad.

A good get for SP though, I like their games but it's rarely been for the writing.

Also, it's worth noting that he's joining, presumably, midway through or near completion of development, so the script is almost certainly complete or at a point that it can't be drastically changed for the worse, regardless of his pedigree.

I loved Telltale's GOT.

I wouldn't read much into a few job listings. Studios as large as SSM almost always have some openings. God of War is probably a late winter/early spring 2018 game.

Yeah, I'm guessing his main contribution at this point will be polishing whatever they've got, as I doubt they're finished shooting already, and maybe writing some additional side content.

I don't understand how anyone could like Telltale's GoT. It was like really bad fan fiction.

I was watching a trailer for Infamous Second Son last night, and for a game that launched a few months after the PS4 released it still looks incredible. Sucker Punch are going to blow socks and knickers off with the visuals in their next game. It's going to be crazy.

Where are people getting the idea that Sony are trying to rectify the mistakes they made with Demon's Souls with Nioh?
Yea, unless Sony had a hand in developing Nioh, there's no way this is a permanent exclusive.

If this does turn out to be a timed exclusive though, then I'm gonna have to seriously question why they would blow resources like that, rather than funding more WWS projects.

is Miyazaki doing another PS4 exclusive? I heard from soft is making a new armored core, and I assume that will be multiplatform. just wondering if there's gonna be bloodborne 2 or another new ip exclusive for Sony.
Armored core PSVR?

I think there were rumors, at least, of a multi-title deal (2 or 3 games).

It seems pretty obvious to me that Sony will have got From tied down to a multi-game contract, especially as Shu has often lamented not publishing Demon's worldwide and treating it better. I believe Verendus said there would be three games which included a sequel to Bloodborne and another new IP. Given the success of Bloodborne (probably 2.5-3 million sales by now) Sony would be mad not to do a sequel, but given that Miyazaki has said he's not fond of doing sequels I could see his next game being a new IP and then after that returning for Bloodborne 2, probably on the PS5.

Well, the fact that Sony took over publishing duties in the west tells you all you need to know about their intentions, which is to make Nioh an exclusive.

Because they're not mutually exclusive?

We've kinda suspected this before, but here's Kojima confirming that Sony has given him 100% creative freedom on DS

Sony gives Kojima-san 100% creative freedom to do what he needs to do. They’ll be in charge of the large-scale promotion activities for the game, but even about Kojima-san still likes to be involved, so they still collaborate on devising the promotion as well.

Any other company would have probably been against showing Norman Reedus naked in the first trailer of Death Stranding, according to Kojima-san. Normal companies would probably be concerned with the content of that trailer, but Sony accepted it, and that’s an example of the mutual trust between PlayStation and Kojima Productions.

There's this too.
Digital Spy: Does Kojima Productions come under your remit as President of Worldwide Studios? Are you directly responsible for Kojima Productions?

Shuhei Yoshida: Not really – we are helping in many ways. We are are offering our services – the collaboration with Guerrilla, or other technical services. But Kojima Productions is pretty much an independent studio so we just help them when they need it.

So it seems like Sony is very hands off, and is just giving Kojima the means to do whatever he wants.
