Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

There's this too.

So it seems like Sony is very hands off, and is just giving Kojima the means to do whatever he wants.

This is the reason i like Sony's games so much, they let developers do what they want and it shows. That's probably why teams like Kojima Productions want to work with them too.

I wasn't a big fan of MGS4 and I haven't played MGSV, but even so the prospect of Kojima being given a giant budget, an amazing engine and total creative freedom to make whatever he wants is pretty exciting. I'm not really interested in having another 2+ years of info being drip-fed out seeing as they announced it so early.

c. Funding has shifted from AA-games to VR-games. If I look at the announcement portfolio of Sony's games in last two years, the decline of AA-games and the pull-back for them largely coincides with the investment in PSVR titles. In other words ,money that used to go to games like Wattam are placed in VR projects. One side suffer for the other side to expand.

I'm the biggest proponent of AA games, I think they're the most important games in a generation and really define consoles, but even I don't blame Sony if the above is true. Third parties, particularly in Japan, have finally got their shit together and AA releases are coming in thick and fast, too many to get through in fact - just as it should be.

I keep telling you guys, the next FROM game will be Dead Space-esque sci-fi with shooting mechanics and HR Giger inspired enemy designs.

My dreams will come true.

Hopefully soon. I really enjoyed my time with it and I'm still looking forward to it primarily based off that. But maybe not too soon? A quiet date that I can day 1 it on would be nice.

yeah, its hard out there to find a perfect release date in H1 2017, especially for this game since it needs to capture a lot of attention again to succeed.

I want Sly to come back. :(

I've been thinking about this too. Even checking out random videos of the entire series on YouTube. I'd really like a Sly 5. There are always some annoying parts to the game but overall I enjoy them and think Sly 4 was, surprisingly, the best Sly game to date.

Wouldn't mind a resurgence of mascot games and such released at a competitive price like Ratchet did recently.

Same here. My hypothetical scenario is that Sanzaru Games is developing it, it's a reboot/remake of the original (like R&C), it'll release around the same time the movie comes out, it'll cost $40, and it'll be running on Insomniac's R&C engine to cut development time.

Sanzaru's done with that 3DS Sonic game, so they might be available...

I'm not sure the Sly movie will still come out considering how badly the Ratchet movie crashed and burned (it didn't even make back its production budget) and Sly is/was meant to be from the same director/company.

Among people who have a history with Sony platforms, I feel pretty alone in actively not wanting them to revisit old properties like Sly, Crash, and J&D. That's not to say I don't like some of those older games, but I just don't see a compelling reason to explore the franchises much further. Ratchet & Clank (2016) was exceptionally well-made and I wouldn't be averse to a collection of the PS2 and PS3 era games, but I would rather see Sony commission something new from Insomniac.

Maybe we'll get another property from Insomniac after Spider-Man

I still say that if Sony's going to revisit old platformers i'd prefer games like Ape Escape and Jumping Flash. The last platformer AE games was released on the PS2 and the last JF game was released on the PSone. Both of those franchises have had very long layoffs.

They might mean something brand new instead of a character that has had a game before. Not sure. But it was Marvel that approached Sony and Sony asked Insomniac to develop for them, right? I can't remember if it went that way or if Marvel asked Insomniac to work with Sony on it.

They teased Ape Escape a year ago. I think we'll see it this E3

I'm hoping that's the case. It's still amazing to me that Sony never tried to use AE to launch Move like they did with the Dual Shock. I'm not talking about the mini-game collection that they did create, but a proper AE platformer. It seemed perfect for it. Much like Jumping Flash is perfect for PSVR.

stuff like this is always interesting. really shuts down people that think companies have these grudges against each other

People simply read far too much into Insomniac developing Sunset Overdrive for the Xbox One as well as their comments for why they did. There never seemed to be any bitterness between Sony and Insomniac. Sony's just a company that wants to own the IP's that they fund and Insomniac wanted to own SO. So, they just didn't blend on that project.

James Stevenson swore up and down (on these boards, no less) that Insomniac's relationship with Sony remained strong after the announcement of SO and folks still didn't believe it.

I dont think another Sanzaru Sly is impossible, they shipped 4 games last year and they clearly work on multiple games at a time, one of them could be a Sly and it could be in production for some time

Sanzaru did such a good job with Sly 4. And the story is currently at a cliffhanger right now. Would love to continue that.
