Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

This thought of a PS5 release in 2019 is laughable.

It doesn't matter if it's 5-6 years, the PS4 is still just not hitting its stride. Releasing PS5 in 2019 makes no sense whatsoever.

If it "doesn't make sense whatsoever" why do you keep geting the years wrong to reinforce your point?? You shouldn't need to...right?

It makes sense in some aspects, and in some it doesn't.

What doesn't make sense whatsoever is your statement saying that it doesn't make sense whastover.

Also, I'm willing to bet that the release date of the PS5 will be closer to fall 2019 than your 2022 prediction

BTW, we need to do plenty of updates to the OP, especially since Farpoint was released, XDev isn't really represented with its own graphics (they did the Wipeout Omega Collection), and I think Bluepoint probably needs to be represented as a studio they work with a lot since they're doing Last Guardian and brought games like Gravity Rush Remastered to the PS4.

JuanLatino, where you at?! xD~~

You mean SotC, right?
Some projects are harder to give credit. SoTC PS4 would be BluePoint/Japan Studio as Gravity Rush Remastered. XDev is also involved in Matterfall, Detroit, That´s You, plenty of projects.

Shuhei made a ''round-table'' interview with a bunch of outlets, and he answered a question on the lack of new big announcements at E3 and if we will see more of them this year still

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eirObauHR94#t=10m25s

EDIT: He also said that his favorite PS4 game is Bloodborne still lol

Mmm giving that the conference was somewhat shorter than expected do you guys think that they saved some announcements after watching Microsoft's one?

I'm still not convinced they can change the conferences like that but who knows

Whoops! Fixed. xD~~

With XDev, it'd be easier to list collaborations but put stuff like Wipeout in a graphic. BluePoint bringing stuff like Gravity Rush and SOTC probably deserves its own graphic.

I didn't predict a 2022 release. I said I was hoping for a 2022 launch. A more realistic guess would be 2020. But none of us knows anyway, so what good is guessing.

A PS5 in holiday 2019 is not that crazy imo

- Days Gone 2018
- God of War 2018
- Detroit 2018
- Spiderman 2018

- The Last of Us 2018 or 2019

I can't help but think a new gen in 2019 would be bad for the industry. Games are already more expensive than ever and take longer to make than ever. It will be this current generation's fifth year by the time devs likes Rockstar and Santa Monica release their first game. That's nuts.

Maybe the opposite. Maybe they thought there'd be too much buzz with the Switch hype and a new Xbox hype, so they figured just put everything into their own event.

Internally I'm sure Sony had to be worried about a potential $399 price point for Xbox X, and I'm sure they expected more of a first party push from them.

With Sega considering Yakuza and Persona for PC, major 3rd-party exclusives are non-existent now.

It's all 1st-party stuff from here on out, with regards to exclusives, so I'd like to see Sony diversify their WWS.

They should open up JP studios dedicated RPGs, for starters.

I wondered where he was but now I see he was banned...Why? Is Gaf out to get rid of anyone with even remotely proper Sources/Knowledge? The "insiders" were the reason I visited gaf in the first place...

I think it's what he said in his post history (something about xbox fans being the most hateful etc. etc. people).

To me it looked as if he autobanned himself with a post that blasted the MS fanboys...

I don´t think they have staff with experience in RPGs currently. Many of the more recognizable franchises were externally developed. I don´t think Toyama´s next game will be an RPG either.
I´d love them to do more RPG´s again. A new Wild Arms is on the top of my most wanted.

I'd shout for Sony to focus on Japanese horror before Japanese RPG's. I don't see the Yakua, or Persona games coming to PC for awhile, and if they do, Sega will probably focus on the original ones first.

I'm surprised we haven't had any externally developed JRPG's this gen. You'd think Sony would be interested in working with Level 5, or Atlus/ Sega.

Just ordered LittleBigPlanet 3 and The Last Guardian. So now I should own every single first party game for the console. I'm especially excited about The Last Guardian. Does LBP3 have any kind of campaign you can play through alone?

Would they be willing to work on something they dont own these days though?

Level-5 has are huge now, not the same situation back from PS2 and PS3 days

A very short one (3-4h), but it does. Its good, very diverse too

I see, well I only skimmed through his posts and didn´t see anything that´s not posted on a regular basis here (In terms of "hate"), so I assumed there was something big I missed.

It was how he tried to lower people's expectation in that thread and boys, people really went at him. Asking why should they believe him and being a debbie downer.

Anyway, I think he has an alt that posted a few days ago.

What are the chances of some Sony first-party acquisitions?

Housemarque seems like a Sony type company... would love to see what they can do with some major funding..

Maybe Insomniac? Supermassive?

Sony made a bunch of new First Party teams dedicated to VR & Mobile games I don't see them acquiring another for mainline First Party games though may just rely on third party exclusives if need be in a part

I don't think Sony will be acquiring any new studios any time soon for multiple reasons.

First, it's very expensive. Forming good relationships with studios so they can be reliable partners (IE: Quantic Dream, Insomniac, etc.) is more cost-effective.

They also have a good assortment of studios and first party structure right now. Devs like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Polyphony, Sucker Punch and Guerrilla making big AAA games that fill in the gaps in the PS4's library, London and Manchester making VR games and studios like Xdev and Japan making a variety of stuff.

Housemarque and Insomniac I dont see it happen. Im sure during all these years working together, Sony approached them at least once, but they seem happy independent and are just now publishing games through other means, with cases where they can mantain ownership and stuff like that.

Supermassive though, that could be one. They have done more to SIE catalog this gen then a bunch of other studios, having products on all of their fronts with PS4, PSVR and now PlayLink

Housemarque likes their independence but I don't think has ruled it out completely. I saw them tweet that to someone recently.

So I wouldn't expect Sony to acquire them, but they seem like a very good fit. Supermassive I agree is a bigger possibility considering how much they're doing for them and how Sony seems interested in working for them.

Insomniac simply seems like a developer that has a great relationship with Sony, but they've boasted their independence in the past, so I don't see them getting bought by anybody.

Supermassive Games and Quantic Dream are both studios that I highly see likely to bought by PlayStation just because their entire relationship has always been on PlayStation.

It, um, might be for the best if Sony don't acquire Supermassive. They don't have the best track record when it comed to UK-based studios.

But wow, I'm kind of amazed at how prolific Supermassive have turned out to be. I feel like we'll have seen a ton of new games from them by the time this gen is over. I'm getting Hidden Agenda, for sure (can't do the others since I don't have a PSVR).

So now that E3's announcements are over, it's reminded me that 2018 is looking like a mighty fine follow-up to this year.

Rest of 2017: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Everybody's Golf, Patapon Remastered, Matterfall, Knack 2, Gran Turismo Sport

2018: God of War, Spider-Man, Days Gone, Detroit: Become Human, Dreams, WiLD

I'm guessing 2019 might be Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II and Sucker Punch's game, but the last is a complete guess since we know nothing about it.

Some of the 2018 ones are maybes, obviously, though I just have a hard time seeing any of them missing 2018, especially since MM tweeted that they have more to show this year on the game. Could be wrong, and I'm not looking to be some psychic on this with an, "I told you so!" next year. Just a feeling, and GAF's track record is bad, and I post on GAF, ergo mine has to be bad as well. xD~~

But since 2015, I've really enjoyed the 1st party output a lot, and this year might be the strongest overall. But 2018 looks like it could possibly top it as a whole if all this comes out, plus whatever we don't know about.

And I'm not even talking third party games, and when you add that... geez.

Had to go for God of War for best trailer. I was a little undewhelmed by it at first (I thought it was sort of weirdly cut together), but having rewatched it several times I came away extremely impressed.

Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II and Sucker Punch's game have a change to become cross gen game with PS5. I expect they want some heavy sellers in the beginning of PS5

About Sony acquiring new studios, doesn't seem likely to me. I would imagine them making a new one from the ground up, in Europe. Qualified workforce for less money, peripheral countries like Poland, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and so on.

Sad part I know specifically the people who were shitting on him and they are the ones I see in a lot of xbox threads.

I will say he didn't do any favors by not at least giving anything tangible to people as to why he was saying to lower your expectations this E3.

Yeah, and he was totally right.

I'm surprised we haven't had any externally developed JRPG's this gen. You'd think Sony would be interested in working with Level 5, or Atlus/ Sega.

I agree. They've pretty much always done one so I'm surprised they haven't, then again with the return to them being interested in a wider portfolio again I'm surprised they haven't resurrected Wild Arms with a console game too.

Supermassive Games and Quantic Dream are both studios that I highly see likely to bought by PlayStation just because their entire relationship has always been on PlayStation.

I'm still thinking Quantic Dream is a real possibility if this game works out well.

Bloodborne?

I'd like to see this too

though unfortunately Sony might just settle for the fact they still get those games like Persona and Yakuza from 3rd parties

Bloodborne?

I think we were talking something a little more traditionally JRPG with a party, etc.
Though obviously not necessarily turn-based since that seems unlikely, unless it were something in an existing series like WA.

Verendus said that and he is not to be taken seriously. I don't why people keep repeating that nonsense.

Because some of that was some people just trashing on him like they have many insiders now and the other is that it seems like Sony generally favors multi-game co-production contracts in situations like this, like they did with Quantic Dream.

It would kinda suck if SP shipped a launch window PS4 game, then didn't ship another game until the launch of the PS5 :/
