Sony rethinks PSP demand

I think as time goes on, it'll be a pretty hard-fought battle in North America, with the PSP winning in the end. In Japan, I think the DS will just continue to pull away, at least until after Pokemon Pearl/Diamond releases, or Sony drops the price of their system.

In Europe... I think Sony will probably do like MS and bundle like crazy to get things going. The fact that you can mod the system should be very attractive to many gamers.

So overall I think Sony's going to have the West in the bag, but not have Japan. The wildcard here is Game Boy micro. I have no idea how that will perform.

Tell that to all of the people here who were predicting Sony to come right in and trounce Nintendo.
It is the nature of people to make predictions based on the available info, and it is the nature of predictions to often be wrong. In sports, they even have a cliché for it: "That's why you play the game."

How many people were claiming that DS was "doomed" a few months ago, and how many were claming that it was just the "post-launch drought?" What makes this period for the PSP any different?

I see the damage control has begun.
I don't have to put up with any shit from someone with a Nintendo avatar. I'm sure you're a wonderfully unbiased observer.

What if PSP ver 2 is coming out sooner than expected? Lower demand for the old model? Lulling nintendo into a false sense of security? BAM 20gig PSP
That would make zero sense, since the #1 theory about why PSP isn't selling up to expectations is its price point. If you agree with that reasoning, then you'd have to recognize that adding features would mean adding cost...which would be counterproductive to the strategy.

This thread sucks, and almost all PSP/DS threads suck too.

Crowing about the DS winning ANYTHING at this point is like celebrating a victory when your favorite baseball team is leading 3-1 after the second inning. (For you international GAF folks, it would be like celebrating a victory when your favorite football squad is leading 1-0 in the 20th minute.)

that's all she seems to say anymore. hater.

:)

on topic. Well, Sony already has my money. If the PSP falls apart like my PS2, goodbye sony hello DS.

* so tempted to sell PSP for PMP

Problem with the PSP is that it's getting crunched by the DS in the portable gaming fundamentals (see formula above) while being utterly destroyed by the iPod as a lifestyle device. Crazily enough the DS and iPod aren't even remotely competing with each other while the PSP is competing with both of 'em.

Excellent point. Nintendo's singular focus on gaming hurt them a bit in the home-console space (no DVD playback), but this same unwavering focus on games is looking to be brilliant within the portable space.

You know it is so very rare to see Sony bots run around on damage control. I'm impressed most of you are handling it very well (especially chittagong, hats off to you sir). Jinx on the other hand .... :lol

PSP v2 will no doubt have LESS features. along with alot less of a pricetag this would help sales more than further bloat.

slightly smaller screen, clamshell, improved button (feel and operation) and better MP3 playback (and usable when lid is closed. Switching to SD memory would kill also.

Exactly why are you calling me a "Sony bot?" I'd love to see the evidence on that one...

Have you met Oogami on this forum. You would not believe.

i would agree with that except for a couple of things... i think the DS' success in japan is going to effect japanese software support for psp in a big way... i can see a situation where the psp lineup starts to look like the current xbox lineup.. tons of western content, but limited japanese content, while the DS has a large mix of both and ultimatley a much larger library of software. If this trend continues much longer i would expect japanese PSP support to really dry up in a big way.

The second factor is the release of next gen consoles, and the psp's price putting it into competition with them in the mind of consumers... in addition, the cost of development for psp games will put it in a similair budget bracket with current gen and next gen consoles causing developers to neglect it as a risky platform.

I think the longer this battle goes on, the more it favors the DS.. Especially in japan, but eventually in the US as well. By the end of this year, if sony hasn't turned things around in japan or pulled far ahead in the US, the DS will have all the advantages. Basicly i think sony has to gain a commanding position before the next gen consoles come out or things will falter badly, not just in japan, but worldwide.

Just look at Thursdayton, Sonybot.
So making fun of people who, in a mass display of wish fulfillment, acted like they had just been given a personal invitation to the Nintendo Rapture qualifies me as a "Sonybot?"

Fuck that noise. Hint: Disliking certain pro-Nintendo posters does not mean that I have anything against Nintendo games or systems, or that I am necessarily pro-Sony games or systems.

Try to draw a rough outline of a v2 with a smaller screen, but keep the drive size and screen aspect ratio intact. I have not yet come up with a sensible way to set the elements in a way that the device would get considerably smaller. Slimmer, for sure, but smaller not.

The smallest combination I can come up with is

- a GBA sp orientation
- with only the 4" screen on the top (doesn't make sense to do a smaller because the media is so large anyway)
- with controls + UMD drive + battery + chip set + connectors + speakers on bottom

Even this would be rather thick because of the thickness of a UMD. And it'd make it a horrible MP3 player, since you'd have to open the device to see the screen.

EDIT: And only feature you could really loose without an impact is the IRDA port, which is probably not expensive anyway. Taking anything else out would pretty much break the platform. It's a very non-flexible construct, the PSP.

Nah I think it's sufficient. Though I might point out that you post "I am NOT a Sony fanboy" more than anybody else here.
In fact, I'm borderline insulted.
Truth hurts yeah?

I don't understand why the words "Sonybot", "Xbot" and "N-bot" (or any variation thereof) aren't just banned. They're the most counterproductive words of all time, and they just contribute to an atmosphere of accusations and distrust.

I say let the DS fans have their time in the sun. Once GTA and GT Mobile comes out, PSP and DS will at worst (for PSP) be neck and neck. These games have outsold everything on GBA and suddenly they're supposed to flop on PSP? :lol Plus the kick ass features on Madden and the superior port of Winning Eleven are going to only help the PSP, not hinder it.

I expect a PSP to come later in the year or maybe next that only plays games and UMDs for a lower price. Maybe WiFi will be nixed too in favor of an additional accessory. Then Sony can sell a premium unit with the PSP functions now. Don't expect a HD to be in a PSP ever. The Pro Duos were meant for extra storage. An extra internal HD is pretty damn stupid.

I propose we substitute all three with the one word: asshole

Why don't you tell me which platforms I own and have owned? While you're at it, why don't you tell me what platforms get the majority of my time, and how much stock I own in Sony?

What does any of that have to do with being a fanboy on GAF?

And speaking of fanboyish behaviour you're half a step away from freaking offering to post a scan of your DS reciept to prove you are the unbias.

i trust you as i'm not that familar with the PSP parts/sizes. it's hard to imagine they designed it so it could NOT be a clamshell device.

the large screen is too intimidating and "scratchable" currently. It's also too large really for what is needed... mass-market would take a smaller screen, same quality. Gadget geeks & hardcore gamers will purchase anyways (current customers).

with the lid closed they could have the shoulder buttons available for vol +/- and hold... necessary stuff for someone not interacting just listening... no lcd needed for that. a small "top of the lid" lcd would be great for MP3 but too costly/bulky.

On an unrelated note, I saw that Hitch UMD is 28$ at BB. What's up with that?

Yes. I agree with this totally, it's going to be another Genesis/Xbox situation.

You're forgetting that these are games that sell huge in the west, but medicore in Japan. This only goes to prove the first point.

I don't remember you reminding everyone to 'wait and see' when predictions of doom were being thrown about for the DS (when it was selling less than PSP in Japan).

you did ask

GT is pretty huge in Japan too, though his whole scenario is completely ignoring Pokemon.

It's beating DS for 2005 here so far.

Well, it launched in 2005...

That said, DS will probably do very well worldwide. Everyone understands low development cost and large installed base, regardless of territory.

I don't hang out in the Gaming Forum very much. But yes, making predictions of doom for the DS based on early sales numbers is stupid. If you want to make predictions about how the two will fare based on other criteria, go nuts. I still think it's a waste of time, but whatever.

It's like the difference between fundamental analysis and technical analysis. One of the two is actually useful.

I know I AM LIKE DUH NINTENDO BACKWOARDS/PALINDROME/NBOT.. urhhhh.

disclaimer: returned nintendo uniform post e3. Doesn't mean I have to do a DEG. :)

Agreed.

I don't know, read Jinx's posts about Sony, almost every one is a defense of some perceived slight against them. Now a habit of running damage control predominantly for one company doesn't make you a fanboy... you'd have to bash their competitors too.

Oh wait, I just looked up his posts about Nintendo. A stark contrast to the Sony material, they are almost all negative or critical.

Evidence mounting, Fanboy Grand Jury summoned...

Well, from reading jinx's stuff I got the impression that he supports Sony more and was generally unsupportive of the DS especially during the PSP honeymoon last year.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, as I'm openly partial to the DS. That said, I don't think its honest when people who have a preference state they are unbiased for the purposes of an argument or discussion.

No, he just connects with female posters on a deep level, taking on their causes and whatnot... or something.

He's registered as Deg (previously DEG) or maybe he just got unbanned.. It wasn't just a case of handing in the uniform, more like joining the troll squad when he left.

Deg was banned for 3 months. He's kinda slowed down. On OGF he was calmed somewhat.

You can be a guy and a feminist. I'm almost one, but I see how shit gets flung both ways, so I'm not.

If the PSP is not making it's numbers it's just a price thing... It just costs too much, games and hardware... It's the Neo-Geo (home version) of handhelds.
