Sony seems to be creating needless confusion and annoyance with PS4 games on both PS Extra and PS Premium

So here's the new three tier system:

PS Plus = 60 dollars a year.
PS Plus extra = 100 dollars a year.
PS Plus premium = 120 dollars a year.

I thought the whole idea of Premium was an extra tier for those who wanted to play classic PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles. That was supposed to be the deal. Premium gets you classic games and access to demos. And while MOST games that are only available in the premium tier are those classic titles, there's some really odd choices that go beyond that for no apparent reason.

Some examples:

Batman: Arkham Origins is a PS3 title that was never ported to PS4. It can be found in the premium tier. Batman: Arkham Knight is a PS4 title. It's in the extra tier. Those both make sense, and it's what I'd expect.

Saints Row 2 is a PS3 game, so it's understandable that it would be in the premium tier. Saints Row the third was also released for the PS3, but it had a PS4 remaster. It can be found in the extra tier. So we can assume that PS4 versions of older games will all be available in the extra tier, right? Not at all.

BioShock remaster for PS4? Premium only.
Borderlands Handsome collection for PS4? Premium only.
Kingdoms of Amalur remaster? Premium.
Heavy Rain remaster? Premium.
Gravity Rush? First game on PS4 is premium, second game is extra.

But even if you accept that most remasters of older titles will require premium even if they are actual PS4 games, the premium for classic titles "rule" still doesn't make sense.

Greedfall on PS4 and PS5. Premium.
Dead cells? Premium.
Fallout 4 that was never a PS3 title? Only premium, for no discernible reason. Same for Fallout 76.
Lego Batman 3? Extra. Lego Harry Potter? Premium.
The Surge? Premium. The Surge 2? Extra.
Shadow Warrior 2 on PS4? Premium. Shadow Warrior 3 that was just released? Extra.

So maybe it's only the most recent title in a series that is included? Nope.

Trials Fusion? Extra. Trials Rising (which is the latest game)? Premium.


There's no rhyme or reason to any of this! As a gamepass competitor that won't have big budget PlayStation exclusives on day one, it makes sense for Sony to sell people on paying 40 dollars extra, unless they really have to play have those PS3 and earlier games. It's kind of a budget service with budget content, although it's still a good value, and a smart way to compete. But considering that almost all PS4 titles are included in the extra tier, Sony being weirdly restrictive and confusing about a handful of games here seems to be a bad idea. I hope people speak up, and I hope they restructure the games being offered to reflect the original promise of each tier.

My hope is that this is all caused by issues with existing PS Now agreements and obligations, and going forward all PS4 titles added to the service will be a part of the extra tier. If that doesn't happen, and new PS4 or PS5 games starting appearing in the premium only category, I hope people will loudly remind Sony that the premium tier was advertised ONLY to be including classic PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles. It's needless bad PR that doesn't need to exist for an otherwise solid offering.

Huh, that's weird as fuck, and sucks. I thought Extra would get me the full PS4+PS5 library, and there's no way I'm paying for Premium since the classic games here in Europe are 100% guaranteed to be the garbage PAL versions that don't even run right.

I'm already on Premium, so (much like Gamer_By_Proxy Gamer_By_Proxy above) I don't have to worry about this, since I get access to everything.

I can see where the confusion comes from, though. I think they're recategorizing some of the existing "remastered" games into the same group as PS1/PS2/PSP "classic" games.

They should have just stuck with two tiers, Essential and Premium. It seems like they want to give people who have (or are thinking of getting) Extra to toss a few more bucks to get Premium and not have to deal with this headache.

It just about does, which makes this all even dumber. Most of the titles people would want to play most are in the extra tier. The extra tier was retarded even if it worked the way you expected, nobody buying $500 consoles and $70 games cares about an extra $1.60/mo. Most of them spend 100x that on Sportball Hero Lootboxes and Fortnite skins every month. It's convolution and obfuscation for the sake of it.

But according to the OP games like Greedfall, Fallout 4 and Dead Cells which never released on Ps3 are still tied to the Premium tier.
So either OP is wrong or Sony is doing some weird shit.

It's not THAT complicated. Classics are games that released on PS3 or earlier. If they got PS4 ports, they just give you those versions. I think, technically, most of those PS2 games are PS4 versions too with trophy support, but Sony is treating them as PS2 games.

This is all from browsing the PS Plus service today in the US, looking at the offerings being presented as basic PS Plus member. If you do notice any mistakes, let me know and I'll change the OP. Feel free to verify any of this yourself. I suppose it's also possible that some games were just mistakenly added to the wrong category. That would be nice to hear, but my guess is that won't be the case.

I've been subbed to psnow for a while and I can tell you it was being ran by a monkey and probably still is.

They had the PS3 version of uncharted 1-3 forever on psnow ,imagine offering the worst version(also only streamable) of your most generation defining game on your premium sub service.

Also I'm convinced whoever oversees psplus and psnow hates Japanese games, look at how many great Japanese games are on the psn store and look at how often these get added.

Xbox has less Japanese games but they add a fuck ton more.

It shows Tennis World Tour 2 as "Premium", but shows "Extra". People are highly likely to get confused and pay for the premium tier. Hopefully it's a bug and gets fixed asap.

They are PS2 ISOs with a Trophy script - the same as PS1/PSP titles on the service so far.
I mean sure - the whole 'it's emulation' is a bit of a semantics argument (they're all 'PS4/PS5' titles on the store) but so is every other 'rule' people suggest in this thread. Ultimately it's all arbitrary to whatever Sony decides to put on what tier.

It's slightly confusing. But exciting for alot of people that have PS+. I imagine it'd be more excited as the year goes on.

Sadly, I think we're just not getting what was promised / advertised. There's an entire list of remasters that are premium only. "Classic games" were supposed to just be PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles. I also double checked the examples mentioned above (Greedfall, Fallout 4, Dead Cells). All of them are premium only, so it's not just games that were originally on PS3 but later ported to PS4.

You 100% can. This same thing happened when Sony "decided" that broadband was important for online play and started PSN. The OG PSN vs. Xbox Live was WAAAAAY worse than this. Xbox Live was at least 20,000,000 times better. This, not so much. Now.....Gamepass is probably only 10 times better than PS+.

Is it the same case as donfonzie donfonzie pointed out, where it says premium but once clicked into it, says extra? Hopefully Sony will fix it by the time it launches where I live, Australia.

Again, sadly no. When I click a title that says extra, it brings me to an upgrade membership to extra menu. When I click a title that says premium, it brings me to a premium upgrade membership menu that asks me to pay twice as much as I would for the extra membership.

I don't care about day one releases, I'm not poor and can buy whatever games I want - but I won't support a service that can't even deliver major generational titles and I'm in the EU, so 50hz, I guess? No boosting of PS1 and PS2 games and no effort of trying to get PS3 games to run natively.

I just think I'm better off with contiuning my "essential" subscription at this point. If they get their shit together in a year I'm ready to throw my money at them - but this is just pitiful.

Greedfall and Fallout 4 are both under the Extra/Premium tier as well as the other games like The Surge and Shadow Warrior. The other games he listed were actually listed under the Classics category when they did their blog post explaining the tiers

You might have a point with the remasters being announced for premium a while ago, which would still go against their marketing and the impression they gave everyone that premium = PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles, but even the list on that blog mixes extra and premium titles into the same list, which would suggest that you can access them all from either tier.

Instead, in Sony's own chart designed to explain the benefits of each tier, the only mention of PS4 games was in the extra tier, and only PS4 streaming was mentioned as a PS4 related aspect of premium. This was all just poorly handled, and could have been completely avoiding by simply saying "classic titles and even more PS4 games" when promoting the premium tier. It would have been that simple.

They didn't give everyone that impression. You just didn't read beyond what you wanted to. They even tell you to look at the website but nope you're stuck on a graph.
