Sony takes bite out of iPod in Japan

Status
Not open for further replies.
Don't call it a comeback yet, but Sony has a new lineup of digital music players that are slicing into the popularity of Apple Computer's iPod device in Japan.

Apple is still squashing Sony in Europe and North America, where the iPod has achieved iconic status and a big selling point is the availability of iTunes, an easy-to-use music download service that has not yet been launched in Japan.

While Apple remains the top seller of hard-drive players in Japan, there has been a decisive momentum swing in the Japanese market, with Sony securing the top position for memory-type players in both May and June, knocking Apple and its iPod Shuffle device into second place.

Translating that success overseas will not be easy, but boosting sales in Japan is an important first step for Sony as it tries to reclaim the lead in the portable audio market it helped pioneer with the Walkman cassette player 26 years ago.

admittedly, the shuffle *is* a crappy device. unless sony is beating the ipod proper, this is not really big news.

As an owner of a busted iPod (the second in a year), I say bring it on. It's about time Sony got its act together with this digital audio business; I wonder if Sony can bring its full court efforts to the United States before it's too late, after their early devices that couldn't even play MP3 formatted files. (!!!)

(Oh wait, I own a Mac. I'm locked in.)

Really? Have you used a shuffle? I happen to have a regular iPod, a mini and a shuffle. The shuffle I take with me on my runs and I also use it to transfer files back and forth from home to work. I'd say the shuffle suits my needs quite well, much better than any flash memory player could. For what it is, it's hardly crappy.

Shuffle wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so damn expensive. I can't really justify $150 for a 1 gig flash player when hard drive players give you 5-15 gigs for the same price.

Yeah, I figured that the shuffle would be a total bomg that no one in their right mind would waste money on. Boy was I wrong...

Sony's flash players seem nice. Nice design, 50 battery life, fm tuner, a screen. Sonic Stage is godawful though, and they pretty much force you to use it.

its crappy compared to comparable solid state players, ok? how can you even say other flash players are crappy, when even basic no name brands have screens and other play/repeat options. come on now.

Otherwise the Sony devices would be perfect from a build and sound quality perspective.

The new players have something sort of like a built in "drag-and-drop" application that lets you bypass sonicstage.

I like the look of Sony's new players plus they have a crazy recharge time.

And have you tried Sonic Stage 3.1 recently? They all changed the structure of the program. I even like it better then itunes.

You will never win. I've learned to let it go. Yes, on the whole, iPods gets outperformed by every other competitor, but you can't tell them that.

Every 6 months.

Anyway probably won't buy an Apple next time when I'm considering a mp3 player.
Also this thread title should of had Apple instead of iPod then it would of been more of the teh funny.

heh...tell me about it. ipod is like the playstation.
sometimes i wonder who DOESN'T own an ipod while in the NYC metro subway.
a shuffle on top of a mini is just sheer overkill, i could at least stand the mini, even though its crappy as well. but, ok, nevermind.

60GB iPod: Only pocket-sized 60GB player. Best price/meg of any pocket-sized player.

How's that being outperformed?

This is good news. I am a huge fan of the iPod and iTunes, and Apple for that matter, but a serious contender to challenge them, like Sony, is probably the only way we will see drastic changes in the digital audio market (as in pricing, proprietary compatibility/DRM, etc.). And Sony and Apple are the two best hardware companies in the world, imo (as far as design, that is, I'm not saying anything about reliability or price), so seeing them constantly trying to one up eachother would surely produce some of very, very sleek hardware (I mean, shit, look at Sony's answer to the iPod Shuffle).

I would love to see Sony really gain back their clout in the audio player arena, or really, in all of their divisons. It would suck to see Sony go under. :(

This has nothing to do with whether Sony's music devices are better or worse than the competition.

The Japanese public with buy a Japanese made product over a western product (even if the western one is 10x better) 9/10 times. Living in Japan I see everyone using Sony music devices (I've never actually seen an ipod in public), using Sony monitors, using Sony computers, using Sony TVs, driving Japanese cars. It's pretty BS and at times when I'm looking to buy something and the stores only stock Japanese-made products and maybe one shitty western model at jacked up prices in the back it can be a bit annoying. I hear it's better in some parts of the country, but where I'm at you don't buy anything Western unless you want to be known as the weirdo by your neighbors.

Note that buying or owning a dryer makes you wierd too here. @_@

I never thought that...in spite of the Shuffle being an ass-backwards piece of shit, being the most affordable iPod on the market meant it's success was assured.

Oh for fuck's sake, how many times are we going to go over this?

You're asking this on an internet forum?

And I really don't see how this is news. As Bebop said, Japanese product always outsells non-Japanese stuff in Japan. If and when Sony makes a dent in the western market, feel free to blow the trumpets. As it currently stands, I doubt Jobs is rocking back and fourth in front of his iMac.

imagine how well ANY iPod would sell in Japan if it had a "SONY" logo embossed on it :lol

Where are you at exactly? I'm pretty much always around Chiba/Tokyo/Ginza myself, and I see more iPods than anything else these days. Mostly minis for that matter. When I first came to Japan three years ago all I ever saw was minidisc players. Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, didn't matter. It's changed quite dramatically really.

For the most part, I've noticed it's not so much a "will only buy Japanese products" thing, as it is a "buy the most popular product" thing. Everything here gets ranked in some way or another, and everyone pretty much buys the things at the top of the list. It's like watching people shopping for digital cameras. They almost invariably look at/ask about only the cameras that are ranked first, second and third in sales. The other cameras may as well not even exist. The same seems to apply to pretty much everything else too, like Louis Vuitton bags for example.

As for the clothes dryer thing, my electricity bill is quite a bit lower here with no dryer. This includes an air conditioner that I know I run too much here, whereas I never had one in Canada. My clothes also seem to last a lot longer without running them through a dryer as well. So I can't really say I miss it any. I do miss my dishwasher and gas oven/range though. :(

Screw you. You've "learned to let it go"? You must have a real fucking problem if you really need to act like such a bitch and post stupid animated gifs about something you clearly have a dislike for.

Congratulations. Sony is outselling the worst iPod even released.
That's quite the accomplishment.

The iPod shuffle should be viewed as an iPod accessory. And consequently, a lot of people do!

Just downloaded 3.1 (had 3.0). Recognizes 3,878 of my 10,212 MP3s. It still sucks. At least if it were an Apple product, they'd tell me that recognizing less music actually makes me appreciate those songs more.

I have an 20 Gb iPod and never had any problems with it, and it has followed me anywhere I go. I don't get why some people are whinning about it being the worse MP3 player... What's the deal here? What is the problem with the iPod player?

I had a Zen (30GB). I liked it. No way in hell it fits in a pocket. It's significantly bigger than an iPod.

I *almost* upgraded mine to 60GB. It's the second-best choice.

i take back what i said about version 3.1 of SonicStage. After roughly four hours of reimporting my music (Athlon XP1700), it recognized all of my MP3s. It's still sluggish, but they added a search feature similar to iTunes. Seems much more stable, and the speed is about on par with Winamp, though it's occupying 100MB+ of RAM at the moment. But for my purposes of converting music to my PSP, it's sufficient.

Not that it matters but isn't it $129 now?

Not only that but...

You know, this type of conundrum would have merit if all Apple portable music players:

1) Were the same size
2) Were the same weight
3) Had the same features
4) Had the same accessories
5) Use the same memory medium

But they don't. Any direct comparison with simply cost vs MB/Gig storage is missing the point.

As much as a overpriced POS the I-Pod is...god knows how anyone can buy the god awful new Sony HDD players - worst looking bit of kit ever. I guess same guys who did PS3 did that.

Even my Nokia 6230i with the Nokia headphones adaptor sounds better then the shitpod.
