James Jackson, vice president of legal affairs at Sony Pictures Entertainment, and his wife have been fined for involuntary servitude (a.k.a. slavery), false imprisonment, invasion of privacy, negligence, and fraud. A jury in a civil court in Los Angeles ordered the couple to pay their housekeeper, Nena Ruiz, US$850,000 in back wages and damages.
The Jacksons paid Ruiz, a Filipino immigrant, only $300 for a full year's work in their home, and they also took her passport away and threatened to turn her over to immigration officials. She was forced to eat leftovers and sleep in a dog's bed, and Jackson's wife allegedly slapped Ruiz repeatedly.
The couple filed for bankruptcy right before the trial began, and they have said that they will be appealing the decision. However, the U.S. Attorney's office is invesitgating possible criminal and civil rights violations, and Sony has suspended Jackson and will probably fire him.
