Got my copy yesterday and played through Story and Legendary Souls to unlock everyone. Fighting against (read: getting beat down by) Kilik was very illuminating for picking up Xiba pressure tactics and combos, lol.

I'm getting used to Xiba slowly and while I like his flashiness, overall he seems much more limited than Kilik. It could just be me not knowing the best options for specific situations with a new character, but I feel like he definitely has weaker horizontals and a poorer reverse game... Will stick with him, though I find myself looking through the rest of the cast for an alt character with a stronger range game.

Won't be able to play online till I get home from my brother's... just gonna play a lot of offline VS for now. But I'm looking forward to throwing down with PSN SoulGAF in a few days!
 
I'm sorry, but you're out of your mind. To me, the game looks categorically better than IV - a game I thought looked dated the day it released.

Pretty nit-picky, but something about the whole presentation seems off to me and it's annoying. I could be completely wrong. I've abstained from SCIV for a few months in anticipation of this.

Those are just my initial impressions. I might have been wrong about how the game looks, I'm going to start up SCIV tonight to compare.

I don't know, probably I was suffering from blunt force trauma or something last night and the game does indeed look amazing as others have said.
Maybe it's just not the leap I expected when I actually had the game plunked down in front of me.

When I was fucking around in Tekken, I found I was often just doing it too late. I think a common piece of advice given to people trying to get the timing right on moves like this (like Cervantes iGDR which I've also been practicing lately) is to try timing it when you press 2 as you roll to 3. I was still never crazy good at it, but I was hitting it a lot more frequently.

Just finished story mode. Don't get all the hate. Guess I'm just a sucker for SC's historical, light vs. dark aesthetic.

It is bad because it is nonsensical, only really involves about 6 characters (and of those -really- just focuses on 3), and is basically just a series of random stuff happening for little to no justifiable reason. Also Patroklos has to be the stupidest character in a long time.

He kills random people because some dude tells him they are totally evil and then is completely shocked when he finds out they were just normal people and the dude telling him that stuff was actually the evil one. He also apparently never questioned the carrot being dangled for him to keep doing this (his sister's whereabouts) until some random guy (ZWEI) just tells him what amounts to "Dude, stop".

Visually, I appreciate how the careful use of depth of field on the backgrounds makes the characters really pop out and look crisp. With such detailed stages, things could have been muddled or overwhelming. Helps with reading moves too.

Yup, Algol totally shows up in Extra Arcade mode. Just fought him in round 5 and unlocked him. :p Cool, now I have all the characters. That full character select screen is satisfying.

Hey they did throw a Setsuka variant 2 in there.

And I'm sure I wasn't the only one who got totally confused when you faced ZWEI for the 2nd time, but instead of controlling Pat, you were controlling ZWEI. Thought my controller went haywire.

Yeah, he comes with his own stage (Tower of Glory: Most Holy Dichotomy) and the empty slot on the character select screen next to Voldo is for Dampierre.

It gave context to a few characters and left a bunch out entirely or just had them show up randomly.

Like Xiba's story is supposed to be about him traveling with Lexia and Maxi and Natsu to find Kilik so Kilik can give him the Kali-Yuga, except when he shows up in Story Mode, he already *has* the Kali Yuga, so that means his entire story (and the stories of Maxi and Lexia and Natus) takes place off screen. What the hell.

I had no expectations for the story mode. The fact that they obviously put a lot of time/resources/effort into the story though and it is terrible is part of what makes it even worse.

I think my expectations were higher because of quotes early on in the development about how Project Soul "took a note from the success of MK's single player story-mode." And the fact that they outsourced story mode to a separate studio, so it wouldn't take away time/resources from the main team. And despite all that, it seemed like a story-mode hashed together in the last month, and written by someone on an acid trip.

Then again, it's still a better story-mode than any of SC's past efforts, even if the dialogue was terrible and there was too much of an awkward incest vibe.

Final question, in addition to the 2 stages that I'm missing which I assume are Algol's and Damp's, do I unlock the rest of them just by leveling up? I've already done story mode but I'm still missing 4 or 5 stages I think.

I think any of these can be seen as a reason for the story is garbage. Considering the story has all of these, it's just absolutely mindbogglingly stupid:
-Time travel.
-Patroklos' whole search for the 2 magical items was him being not sure where to go, all he knows is that the items should be in Asia... and then he randomly travel to western Europe and oh so happens to stumble on the 2 items.
-Viola's personality being as complex and interesting as a fortune cookie.
-Patroklos' personality suddenly turning from being a one-sided arrogant prink, to one-sided goody goody hero man.
-All characters having extremely one sided personalities.
-Did I mention the completely out of whack and unnecessary time travel? I don't get why they simply didn't make that an alternate ending.
-Any character cameos pretty much being "Hi there! Bye!". I'm not quite sure why they insisted on replacing several characters when they don't even have a substantial role in the story.
-Ivy being a generic good guy. At the very least give her some attitude. She's not supposed to be all goody goody.
-Why the freaking fuck is Raphael Nightmare and why doesn't the story mention it at all? That's the biggest plot twist in the series, and it's not even apparent unless you go to CAS mode. You could have a similar complaint about Amy/Viola.
-And of course, all the extremely poor writing and voice acting. I'm kinda tired of hearing characters shout "GOMENASAI!!!!"
-And from a gameplay perspective, it's extremely dull compared to any of the previous singleplayer modes in the SC series. I'd even take the story mode from SC3 with its repetitive ridiculous QTEs over this.

So yeah. I kinda think the story mode is complete trash. I'd love to see the next SC be a "dream match" kind of game where they add any character they want without consideration to a story.

Dampierre doesn't have a stage, but I have all of the stages and I'm at level 25 or something, so just keep playing I guess. :p

Fine, I get the hate. I like what story mode did for me.

I like the detail of Phyrra's stance having her lean backwards while Omega sees her leaning forwards.

My bad for getting the publisher wrong. Future Press deserves all the props in the world for this guide, as well as everyone involved regarding its content. What other FG guides have they done? When I'm done with it, this guide will be placed on the shelf with all my real books.
I don't believe they have made any other FG guides, SCV is the first one.

"You look so pale and filthy... *evil face* you must be malfested!"

Since one of the people that worked on the guide is here, I have to ask... why is the Devil Jin section incomplete? It doesn't have a move list at all (all other characters do), only the suggestions on what moves to use. So I have no frame data for a majority of the moveset.

How about right after that when he says "How unfortunate there's no way to prove it" as the rationalization for why it is ok.
 
It's obvious that Story Mode was a rush job. There's honestly no point to it being there. The Patroklos/Pyrrha story is not interesting enough to keep my attention any longer than those short 20 chapters, and the lazy comic illustration scenes are just uninspiring. I was hoping for some kind of Mortal Kombat adgacent, but not only are there barely any CG clips, but the script itself is archaic and silly. Either turn it into a weapon master-esque mode where you're mostly battling and collecting things, or commit to an actual story with a better script and full CG cutscenes. Anything in between is obviously half-baked. I'm certain I'll never touch Story again.

When I read reviews giving this a 7.5 or 8, my reaction was initially disagreement, but I can really see where these reviewers come from. The gameplay and presentation is a 10 but Project Soul obviously took the safe route with everything else. Maybe they'll do something in way of some DLC but I honestly doubt it.
 
I have a fightpad I used for MK; does anyone think that would be better than a normal 360 controller? Biggest issue I could see is using a D-pad instead of analog but maybe that's better anyway.

Definitely better. Unless you have one of those newer 360 controllers.

-Eh, that didn't bother me. What bothered the hell out of me was her VA during the cutscenes. Ugh.
-Hell, why doesn't the story mention anything about anyone else at all? My biggest problem with this is the Maxi/Xiba/Leixia/Natsu/Kilik subplot. Maxi's story says that Kilik is in trouble, Xiba has to inherit Kali-Yuga, Leixia wants to find out what her pendant (Dvapara-Yuga) is, Natsu wants to find Taki, and nobody knows what the hell happened with Kilik since he doesn't even have a profile. When we finally meet that group in story mode? "Oh yeah, all that stuff already happened while you weren't looking.
-Yeah, it really needed more character variety. Even if not every character, something like MK would've been fine.

And since we're talking about problems we have with the story...
god, I hope they did NOT just kill off Zwei :| (good thing we never see a body though)

Eh, as terrible as the story is they did outsource it so I can't really say that it took away from anything else in the game. It is obvious a lot of the in-house time went into making the engine work and look great and online amazing. It has so much to it and is easily the best I have seen in a fighting game. In that sense the game definitely deserves high scores. It isn't like SC has ever really had a good story mode so the fact that they outsourced it to another company and ended up actually making a big huge thing with cutscenes doesn't really take away even though it is bad.

As someone who plays fighting games for a 4 day weekend rental like crazy 90% single player and then never touches them again....this. Was hoping for something like Mortal Kombat's single player instead I got motion comics with bad voice acting. Arcade mode didn't even have an ending! (At least Ezio) blarg.

I am amazed I had enough patience to go through it. I was extremely tempted to stop midway. But I knew it was a short mode and I was curious about it, so I pushed through.
 
I'm not sure what kind of expectations people had for "story" in a fighting game. I mean, desiring better than what we get is one thing, but "expecting" it is another. Also, Algol is great for crushing my fellow scrubs. So many people don't know you can step his 6BBB ball and give me a free Low/Mid mixup or just mash a button and run right into the ball anyway.

I play with Japanese voices so I have no idea if the voice acting is terrible or not. I do know Xiba's KO scream is a bit much, though.

When you consider the totality of circumstances, I think it's easier to appreciate it. It's clear the team prioritized the most important things for a fighter (gameplay engine, online and presentation). When they said they were drawing inspiration from MK, it's clear what they meant, in terms of direction. Doesn't mean they could have feasibly allocated the same time and resources to it.

We need a version of the Ancient Aliens dude with "I DONT KNOW, THEREFORE MALFESTED" lol. I swear if you took a shot everytime they say malfested in the story mode, youd be one drunk soul calibur player!
