South of Midnight |OT| Don't stop me-weavin'

I'm on Episode 9 and so far it's a very mixed bag, the combat and platforming is really pretty mediocre and not much fun but the atmosphere, world, graphics and music, especially the music are wonderful.
It's really refreshing and with a likeable protagonist too so, so far it's a much more enjoyable package than the core gameplay would make you expect.

Just finished this and lots of mixed feelings but very glad I stuck with it.

Pros
  • Gorgeous graphics, really beautiful environments, interesting art style
  • Dripping with atmosphere
  • Refreshingly different setting
  • Likeable protagonist, good voice acting
  • Brilliant music, hugely added to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the game

Cons
  • Gameplay is pretty mediocre, combat gets better with more powers but never hits the spot.
  • Game is very linear
  • Too much handholding
  • Buttons occasionally unresponsive

It took me 17 hours to finish, I'm glad it ended there as I had had enough, some of the level design is really uninspired but the game was touching at times, I took lots of screenshots as it was gorgeous and I really enjoyed the setting, world and characters, despite the flaws, it was worth it and I wish we had a lot more games of this ilk and scope.

7.5/10

I forget my initial thoughts on the game when I finished it, but looking back, I'd give it a 6-7/10; and probably closer to a 6 than a 7.
Not terrible and does some things really good like the art and atmosphere, but some things below mediocre too.
Boss designs were pretty cool even if the fights were mostly meh.
Others have praised the music, but for me it was just there. Didn't hate it, but didn't like it either.
It's biggest flaw without a doubt is the combat. The fov being too close to the point you get hit by a lot of stuff you don't even see coming. It's also very repetitive to the point that after the first half of the game you've seen all the combat and enemies the game has to offer. I don't remember using the skip fight option, but I have friends that did use it, so I guess it's good it's there but also speaks volumes about what even the devs thought of the combat.
It's definitely a game I'd recommend people try despite the final score I gave it.
