I liked the idea behind mysterion to a point- I think its selling out to try and explain one of the original points of the series from ages ago.

Yeah, I kinda liked the fact that nobody really ever talked at length about the fact that
Kenny keeps dieing and then coming back to life.
It was part of the whole joke for me. Now they've gone and changed that.

Or they could spend the episode acting as if there's going to be an explanation.
Kenny confronts the cultists, tells them what's going on with him, and demands to know what they did. And then cultist say they have no idea what it is, only that it's "just weird."

Cue Kenny dying, the whole thing repeating, and a Mysterion monologue about his "curse."

I remember an episode where they are stuck in a bus crash, and keep telling stories, and notices that Kenny dies in all of them, but still is here. Does anyone remember which episode that is?

That was a Totoro reference? I thought it was supposed to be Never Ending Story.

Anyone commented on how it's funny but kinda fucked up that Butters has been held prisoner for like a WEEK? :lol

That's the thing though, the series has shown on several occasions before this that
Kenny has been aware of his curse for a long time.. As far back as the phillip glass performance where Kenny was really nervous about his tendency to die in that episode
.

so uhh what if that was all actually a dream when kenny finally wakes up at the end? naw.. can't be.

Hindsight and the retroactive spider was pretty good. i had to ask "did I just hear that correctly?"

True, but I don't really like them explicitly acknowledging Kenny's curse. It takes out some of the fun of the early episodes.

I feel the same way I felt about Mr. Tenorman being Cartman's father. Cartman's mother being his father was absolutely hysterical and wonderfully absurd, and they totally fucked it up.

I've gotten really annoyed with Trey and Matt's lack of respect for the early seasons. They really seem to hate them, and often act humiliated by their very existence. And that pisses me off, because I liked the show a helluva lot more back then.

Wasn't there another episode that
explained Kenny constantly dieing? It made no sense, but still.
Season 4, ep 6 "Cartman Joins NAMBLA." Kenny's mom is trying to have another baby, and the entire episode, Kenny is trying to talk her out of it/force her to have a miscarriage. Near the end of the episode, Kenny is run over by an ambulence and killed.

Afterwards, Mrs. McCormick gives birth to a child that looks exactly like Kenny, which thye name Kenny. The last two lines of the episode are as follows:

Mr. McCormick: "God, this must be the 50th time this has happened"
Mrs. McCormick: "Fifty-second."

And yes, that was an accurate figure on the number of times it would have had to have happened since the beginning of south park to that point :lol

The joke is still there. It's just called a superpower now. The power to die, then come back to life and purge the memory of his death from everyone else's memories, is the superpower that Kenny McCormick/Mysterion has. :lol

Nothing has changed

I'm ignoring that :p The new explanation is better :lol

Enjoyed the episode.

Show was best from like season 6-10 or so... early episodes are fun but they lack a certain refinement. Season 6 is when they really hit their stride and South Park 2.0 was sorta born.

Now when I go back to watch the old, old episodes that always feature Kenny dying, I'm going to have a new respect for the character and his existentially tormenting predicament! I don't think it takes away from the old episodes, but rather adds a series staple concept and a whole new dimension to what was going on.

People looking to much into the Kenny thing, especially since its going to be ignored and forgotten soon enough, and probably a new element tossed in in a future season that doesn't make sense.

That's the thing though, this probably won't be forgotten because the next episode will delve further into it and perhaps even change something. Kenny is now discovering the source of his immortality, tracing it back to the cult of Cthulu.. will he rid himself of his curse? The next episode could change the character completely(or not).

I correctly guessed Mysterion's identity :lol I knew the guesses in this thread felt weird, because its in Matt and Trey's nature to go for something absurd. And what's more absurd than having Mysterion be
a useless supporting character who doesn't talk for pretty much the entire series? :lol
They did a good job revealing his "power" though. So is this going to be a three parter?

Seasons 3 through 7 were the peak of the show, IMO. Seasons 1 and 2 are great, but it wasn't until Butters was introduced in Season 3 that it reached new levels of awesome.

Personally, I think the ability to make episodes in less than a week has hurt the show. It's great that they can respond quickly to recent events, but it's like they feel obligated to do it almost every episode now.

And I can see where you're coming from with Kenny. Now that I think about it, it's not nearly as bad as the whole "Scott Tenorman and Cartman are brothers" reveal. That was flat-out retarded.

I loved how the
Kenny reveal
was so anti-climatic, just the rest of the boys saying his name while out of character. Thought that was really well done.

I called it being Kenny when he had that line...
"Because it pisses Cartman off immensely and I find that funny"

edit: oh and everyone dropping their voices as soon as Kenny is called out is great. The very next line you could tell the human kite was Kyle.

do you guys think i could jump in and watch this show from this season or should i just keep going chronologically? i don't know how much continuity matters in this show lol

i'm on season 3 at the moment.. just watched the chinpokemon episode last night :lol

There's really no reason to watch the show in order. The only main reason would be the end of season 5 and all of 6 when Kenny is "permanently" killed and there are a few episodes in S6 where that is referenced. Also the S6 episode Scot Tenormen Must Die is kind of the point where Cartmen goes from whiny fat kid to an evil manipulative fat kid. Other than that, feel free to jump around all you want.

it doesn't really matter that much... but you might as well just keep going chronologically so you can whine with the rest of us about how some of the more recent seasons sucked!!! the show is definitely making a strong comeback though.

Season 12 is mostly crap.

Some awesome callbacks might fly over your head, but i wouldn't worry about missing out on any story continuity.

I was thinking the same thing. Clash of episodes.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Also, Cartman's blatant anti-semitism. Cthulhu with him on back destroying a synagogue. :p
