(edited Tumblr post)
First, we are proud to announce that Toonami will be WORLD PREMIERING the new series from Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) and Studio BONES (FMA, Soul Eater, many more), SPACE DANDY! SPACE DANDY is a brand new series that will be premiering in the U.S. BEFORE it premieres in Japan (yep, you read that right)! Details on that to follow soon.
Oh, and when will it premiere? Sooner than you think- This January, at 11:30 PM.
"Did I just read 11:30?"
Yep, you read that right. Space Dandy will kick off an expanded 6-1/2 HOUR TOONAMI broadcast every Saturday. Toonami Faithful, we got our extra half hour!

This is really great news. It's kinda amazing that they actually managed to make the deal work. There were rumblings about how the Japanese production side had strict deadlines in October for at least some of the episodes, which is pretty strange considering the show doesn't start for months. I guess they needed to get stuff ready for the dubbing process. Really looking forward to how successful this becomes. :)

I will watch this beacuse of Watanabe but I'm not feeling the overly silly, overly 80s art style that looks like a Bebop parody of sorts.

i guess the question now is what time they air it. Toonami is currently playing Sword Art Online at 2am, which ends in January, but i would think they wouldn't put something of this magnitude so late at night.

This is referencing a style of retro pulp sci-fi that's even older than the 80s. It's taking inspiration from a place sci-fi doesn't go much anymore.

I don't want it to be Bebop or even try to be Bebop.

I want it to do its own thing, which it appears to be doing quite well.

January is going to be fantastic.

Also helps avoid having purple bricks.

Hmm... I may be forced to actually watch something with dubs...

Great to hear! Do we know if this going to be airing in the midnight-6 AM block on Toonami or will it air during primetime on regular Adult Swim?

TV anime ain't
quite
dead yet. :p

Yeah, I'm assuming it will air on Toonami (which is cool, I want to see the block succeed). But on the other hand, if Space Dandy is relegated to the back end of the Shonen Jump Power Hour(s) and new episodes don't air until 2 AM, it will be harder for me to watch new episodes as they come out. So from a somewhat selfish perspective, I'd like to see it during primetime. I don't know which would be better for ratings, though.

This is great news in general though. It might lead to other shows getting a similar treatment if this turns out well.

I really dont think they would put something this big in the SAO time slot. If no expansion I bet they push naruto back a bit as its older than everything else airing at the start.

Last time I can remember anything like this happening was with IGPX, and Cartoon Network coproduced it.

I might actually have to watch Toonami this January.

The more successful this is for CN, the more likely they will be willing to co-fund another season regardless of how it does in Japan. Which is great news because I don't think many people in Japan will want to buy this.

Madman has now confirmed their license for Australia, as well as a simulcast.

http://www.madman.com.au/news/madman-acquires-space-dandy/
Madman is proud to announce the acquisition of SPACE DANDY, the hotly anticipated new space comedy from director, Shinichiro Watanabe and the creative team behind COWBOY BEBOP. The series will premiere simultaneously online in Australia and New Zealand as it airs on Japanese TV, streaming on the Madman Screening Room (madman.com.au/screeningroom) in January 2014.
