While I agree with the sentiment, I think this just turns into whataboutism, and the better approach is to dedicate your own thread to raising awareness of the west's transgressions, instead of trying to shoehorn it into this very valid thread. I was against the war in Iraq. I’ve been against much of what the US was involved in militarily over the past 20 years. I’ve seen footage of the Ukraine shelling and its aftermath and instantly thought about what we did to Baghdad and parts of Syria. I get it.
But to say the US did everything to make this conflict happen? Nonsense. Russia’s history is just as sordid, if not arguably worse than ours. They’re just as power-hungry, just as militaristic, only nowhere near as capable.
To say this is the work of the US, or the West, whilst absolving Russia of any culpability is, well, too stupid to warrant a response.

And that, by inference, suggests that Russia did nothing, since the US and west "did everything".
So, that's what I'm replying to.
And while it is true that both sides have blood on their hands and no conflict exists in a vacuum, that doesn't mean that everyone is equally culpable when one of them is an asshole.
In this case, Russia is in the wrong, and what they are doing is absolutely reprehensible, previous conduct of the US or any other western nation notwithstanding.

I love how people screech "but we are a net exporter" while ignoring that the whole NATO alliance actually depends on foreign entities such as Russia for oil and this was a flaw detected years ago, but everybody went for the optics and chose to ignore a potential conflict with Rusia.
