Spartan: Total Warrior -- any thoughts?

I got this as part of the the TRU Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale... and I haven't removed the shrinkwrap yet.

Should I? Is the game any good?

I enjoyed it. If you're looking for lots of combos and stuff then you may be dissapointed. The combat's not really set up that way. It's more about the situation you use the combat in. There's lots of blocking, trying to maneuver yourself to a better position, short burst of fighting, back to blocking as the enemies close in around you.

There's also a decent amount of variety in the mission objectives to keep things interesting, and later enemies start to require you to think more about how you approach them (like the undead who can't just be beaten to death to be killed, or the assasins who can be tricky to get hits on). Bosses are quite good as well.

I'd say it's a good solid game, rather than spectacular.

Hmm. $33 good?

What's that in real money (ie. British Pounds)? Assuming a ballpark figure of 1.6 dollars to a pound gives about 20 quid, not sure about tax on top of that.

Maybe I should work this the other way. I paid 35 pounds for it and I think that it was worth it. Take away tax and multiply by my generic 1.6 exchange rate and I get over $48.

Edit: Just checked the actual exchange rate and it's currently 1.76825 dollars to the pound. So that gives me a final figure of $53.53.

That's not bad. Only slightly over the American RRP.

I think it's a good entry for a new series. Hopefully in future installments they'll expound a bit on the combat, boost the AI up some, and add more playable characters. Those are my only qualms.

God of war spoilt me.. the combat system in spartan is just meh. the game is beautiful to watch someone else play tho :)

It's really fun in some ways, really rough and generic in others. It can be quite challenging in parts as well. I have to say that they get across the large battle feeling pretty well though the camera is occasionally wonky as it always in these games. The presentation and story around everything is really lame but that's not really a deal breaker for a mass beu. It's sort of repetitive even for the regular combos, so my hands would be quite sore after playing it. I like the bonus arena mode, kind of neat.

I thought DW5 was a total bore, but I'm not ready to say this is any great improvement though it's different. At $20 I'd get this in a minute, for $40-50 it's overpriced. If you can trade it for a full priced game you really want I'd consider that.

I got it in shrink as well... probably won't get to it until the spring... all the videos of it make it look badass though... You should just think of it that you got it for free in the TRU deal, and paid regular price for the other games. It will make it easier to enjoy the game. That is what I did. (of course I got Resident Evil 4 and Soul Calibur 3, so it was really easy to justify that thought process as both of these are easily worth full price).

Oblivion delay means I just got a lot more time to play games. I have to hunt down Shadow of Rome as well...

I'd give the game a 7. In a nutshell, the visuals while strong lack style but overall the game provides for a strong action/fighting experience.
