Spartan Total Warrior. How is it?

EGM liked it quite a bit, really. Seems like it can get pretty difficult, and it has lots of epic battles. Sounds like my kind of game, but I'm poor. Think I'll rent it definitely though.

have you played god of war? i know spartan is not exactly like that but you must play god of war. goty imo.

I did. Not my type of game.

Anyone know the differences between the GC and PS2 version of Spartan Total Warrior?

To me, it looks like a toned down version of Shadow of Rome. I played the demo, in fact, I still have the demo laying on my desk.

I guess killing lots of people never gets old :P

Has anyone done a Head 2 Head with the different versions?

I love Dynasty Warriors, might be a nice $20 purchase some day (probably soon).

Friend brought the xbox version over yesterday - my mini review based on playing the first 3 levels only:

the good:
- 60fps all the time
- looks really pretty
- LOTS of enemies to fight

the bad:
- really simple combat - no real combo system
- annoying camera

I got bored pretty quick - its nice to watch someone play, but very repetitive and i just didnt like the combat system. Friend likes it tho (but he likes stuff like this - lots of mindless things to kill, button mashing).

Reminded me most of playing gauntlet, or the console versions of baulders gate (but without the leveling and equiping sutff) - just a very pretty, very simple hack and slash.

repetive? no way - spartan has some really diverse level design. the game has much alternation.

but yes, the camera is really annoying.

It's not a bad game, but I felt the controls left something to be desired. Definately not as much fun as God of War though.

People on the on the ntsc boards were saying the combat system is too complex. And the type of button combinations you have to use are painful on the fingers.

ok when i said repetitive i meant that you just end up hammering the same sequence of buttons all the time - because most of the fancy moves take forever to play out and the simple bash bash bash, chop everyone's head off, zap everyone with lightning sequence is so damn effective :)

the game is very varied in its mission structure and level layout.

God of War fans need to calm down :lol

There's none of God of War's puzzling or platforming or combos or badly-rendered polygon bosoms here. Just a whole lot of slick, entertaining violence.

Personally i thought God of War was weak.

It is nice to come home and hack and slash your way through all the enemies.
there is also an arena mode, that is just enemies, enemies and enemies....(smash tv plus)

Especially in Normal mode you cannot only button bash....

Who can help with Chapter 2? I think you have to shoot burning arrows on the barrels to open the port...how to get those arrows burning?

There are specific ready-made burning arrows, so you just need to look for a chest somewhere that has them, as far as I know. There should be two crates, one with the regular arrows, another with burning ones. Sorry if that doesn't help much...

I agree in the sense it's a great game -- the only similarities with God of War is that it's set in ancient Greece and uses Greek mythology. It's Dynasty Warriors on steroids, and certainly more engaging than Koei's title for it. Button mashing rarely works for long durations, as previously noted, especially on the harder settings. Blocking and tactics are pretty much essential to survive, otherwise you find yourself getting spanked at every turn half way through Act 1 alone. It can get a little tiresome, true, but it's still fun most of the time. And for The Creative Assembly's first true action/melee title, it's a great achievement.

the combat system isnt too complex.

you got tweo special attacks (one with the rage-o-ometer) and one with the weapon), this two attacks can be used with two sorts of attacks. so, it sums up two four special attacks, where you have to use r1/r2 + circle/x button). you can shoot arrows with l1 + x. it is nothing special and very easy to use (one ps2).

It's fun but sort of hard on the hands. The camera is occasionally real bad. Just occasionally. The whole surrounding story and presentation is really bad and corny, nothing near GoW level of slickness.

I thought this game wasn't out till October 25?

May give it a rent. I doubt it is superior to Dynasty Warriors.

OOooO I have to try this out... It sounds like one of those games you can master and look like a fucking badass playing it.

Kinda like Virtua Fighter.
