It looks set to become the first ever bond theme to chart at number one in the UK singles charts: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34380060

Preparing for one of the worst Bond movies ever is getting ever easier with this theme song..

Wow..

They couldn't have created a more boring song...

Still surprised at all the negative responses. Sam Smith is a fantastic singer + the instrumentals / strings in this song are great. Sure it's a slow song, but I think it will fit the tone of the movie. And slow does not equal boring.

what is making people think this film will be shit though? the hype train for skyfall was pretty real, but there is a lot of scepticism with this one.

Many found the leaked script bad ( personally I didn't)
Rumours of over bloated budget/rushed production
Trailers and marketing haven't sold the film well compared to Skyfall
Coming off the success of Skyfall, compared to Skyfall following mixed QoS critical reception
No Rodger Deakins (seriously made a world of difference on Skyfall)

The script leak isn't helping matters... which is a little silly, honestly. Casino Royale basically had to conjure a new third act out of the air because the one they had when filming started wasn't working, and that turned out alright.

The last we heard, the execs were aware of the problems with the script, and work was ongoing to fix it. This is very standard stuff for a film with as tight a turnaround as a Bond movie- the difference is that we've had a peek behind the curtain this time.

I was away on holiday so I only just heard this song. How do you go from something as amazing 'You know my name' and 'Another Way To Die' which with the hindsight of time is sounding better and better, to one bland ballad by Adele followed by another one by Sam Smith?

The sad irony is both are great artists and can do uptempo powerful driven songs but whoever is in charge of music for Bond seems to have a note that reads safe and bland only.

Living Daylights and Licence to Kill are the two most underrated songs in the Bond theme song collection, IMO. I'll still turn on LTK every now and then just to listen to the last 40 seconds or so of the song.

The run from For Your Eyes Only to Licence to Kill (excluding All Time High) is my favourite set of Bond themes. Licence to Kill really is a masterpiece.

Ugh. I gave it a fair listen. First song I have ever heard from him. Really don't like his voice. Song is boring as all hell too

Well Writing's On The Wall has been confirmed as the first Bond song to hit #1.

Sam Smith can call himself 001 as he scored the first-ever number one James Bond theme with Writing’s On The Wall.
The Spectre track soared straight into the top spot with 70,000 combined sales and streams, finishing 13,000 ahead of closest competitor, Justin Bieber’s What Do You Mean?

Sam told OfficialCharts.com: “It was such an honour to be asked to write and record Writing’s On The Wall and it’s incredible that it’s become the first number one Bond theme song.
“It’s been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara (Broccoli) and Sam (Mendes) to become part of this British legacy.
“I couldn’t have done this without my fans – this is a special moment I’ll never forget.”
Writing’s On The Wall is Sam’s fifth number one single.
Bonus: Disclosure explain why this'll be "timeless" (seriously why guys)

Once Napes and Smith finished the lion’s share of “Writing’s on the Wall," they reached out to their "Latch" and "Omen" collaborators for some subtle final touches — not the dance productions they're known for, which they strengthen on new album Caracal. The brothers from Surrey ended up in the studio "just trying some stuff out," before adding "a few bits and bobs, like some synthesizers and some textural effects, and things just to kind of make it a little bit less classic-sounding and a little bit more contemporary.”

“The orchestra, piano, and vocals were already on it, and it sounded incredible,” Howard tells Vulture. “I don't think they knew exactly what they wanted us to do at that point, but they just wanted us to add a more modern vibe.” That’s harder than it sounds: To write a Bond theme is a delicate balance between upholding a legacy while also putting your own stamp on it. Some, like themes from Duran Duran ("A View to a Kill") and Madonna ("Die Another Day"), sound like time capsules of an era; Smith's is more of a low-simmering torch song in the style of — unsurprisingly — Adele (the Oscar- and Grammy-winning "Skyfall") and the iconic Bond voice Shirley Bassey.

Though he was brought in specifically to help "Writing's on the Wall" sound more current, Howard says the key to a great Bond tune — like his favorites, “Goldfinger,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” and Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” — is not its contemporary spin but its timelessness. “I feel like you need to be able to listen to it in 30 years and it still be good," he says. "I think that they've done that with this one, as with most of the Bond themes. They've got such a good hit record. That's why it's such an honor for Sam to have to been asked in the first place. It's such a legacy to leave. No matter what Sam does now in his career, that's still always gonna be one of the biggest things he's done. That's just so cool.”

Video has been released. Some new footage of the film.

Seems like Leya Seydoux will go all Eva Green on me and be a Bond Girl I'll fall in love with

For the song itself. It grows on me. Don't really like the high pitch voice of Smith, and some of the lyrics are cringeworthy (I've been here before, down on the floor? okay...) but the brooding, slow building feeling I like. Also, it has the Bond feel imo (thanks to the strings)

Can't wait for the movie.

If it wasn't for the falsetto the song would be better received. It's not a great Bond theme but the chorus is out of place.

The instrumentation will be used to to good effect in the film, that much is sure.

Its not a bad song, its really quite a good Ballard.....but something about it doesn't seem very 'Bond' theme
I think it lacks punch? it seems to build but then doesn't quite reach the climatic bit you'd expect, even Skyfall had a fairly well structure of building to the chorus

I do think if Sam Smith covered Skyfall we'd get a better version of that song, since he has correct diction and would say sky FALL unlike Adele's rather southern (English) drawl of Sky FAAAWWWL
