SPECTRE theme song released - Writing's On The Wall by Sam Smith

Is there a correlation between shit Bond songs and shit movies?

No, but there is a supposed 4th movie curse for each actor.

Connery - Thunderball
Moore - Moonraker
Brosnan - Die Another Day
Craig - SPECTRE?

Thunderball wasn't horrible, but it's one of Connery's weakest films. Moonraker and Die Another Day are both considered to be some of the worst Bond films.

And after SPECTRE producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said Sam Smith's song would "surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time". I have some doubts about their judgement for SPECTRE. But hopefully the movie is a lot better than this shit song.

That is one frightening statement. What the fuck! They are undoing all the greatness they had accomplished with Casino Royal, ruining the franchise one movie at a time.

You're right, as producers promoting their franchise, they should have said it would "surely be considered, eh, not that great, kinda middle of the pack really."

And Thunderball is great.

Ruining the franchise? It's not like Bond hasn't had several rough patches before. I think if you asked most people they'd say Craig's had a pretty good run. Casino Royale and Skyfall were both received well.

I am not feeling this one at all. Adelle's was pretty good, even though I don't like Adelle and You Know My Name was amazing.

I like the Craig movies but man I miss Cold War Bond. Right on down to the theme songs.

Well what are they supposed to say? "Yeah it's ok, not as good as the one one from 10 years ago, maybe just a bit worse the the last one." lol

Casino Royal was amazing and Skyfall was just a generic, better than Quantum of Solace, action movie. Casino Royal was a very powerful entry to make James Bond relevant again, maybe more than ever.

I still prefere 'You Know My Name' from Cornell as the best Bond theme.

I'll wait for the opening credits to see if that match with the mood of the movie.

Chris Cornell bond song sit rest and easy on my top

Nope, You Know my Name is the best since the Shirley Bassey days.

How strange. Have you not seen all the Bond movies or do you guys just really like Chris Cornell? Here's my top 10 personally:
1) Goldfinger
2) Nobody Does it Better
3) Live and Let Die
4) Thunderball
5) OHMSS
6) You Know My Name
7) You Only Live Twice
8) The World Is Not Enough
9) From Russia With Love (Matt Monroe)
10) Skyfall

I also don't understand the Duran Duran love here. But hey, at least we can come together about the Sam Smith song being disappointing. I disliked the guy coming in, but I also disliked Adele and her song is really good.

I wish I knew who to blame for this shit, I guess Barbara Broccoli doesn't know what she's doing. First that one for quantum of solace now this.

I also blame the pop community

I just don't get what they saw in Smith's track.

I wonder if they were laying it over a spec/rough version of the intro sequence, maybe?

They chose Skyfall over Supremacy, which ultimately ended up being the right call. It could simply be that they thought Sam Smith would get them more press/attention than Lana Del Rey, and gambled poorly.

Keep in mind: They tend not to choose artists based on their merit first, but on their salability. This is why Sheryl Crow got the Tomorrow Never Dies gig even after kd lang had turned in Surrender. They thought Crow would move more soundtrack units.

I found out today that Johnny Cash was almost chosen to perform a Bond theme. I wonder what that would have been like, or what movie it was going to be for?

I dunno I can't see this one being worse than Quantum of Solace.

I don't buy that "fourth movie curse" thing. It's not really a curse, it's that by the time you get around to the fourth movie of anything you're starting to get ground down. It's not like Thunderball was Connery's worst film (the next one he made could be argued to be worse than Thunderball, and the last one he made is one of the five worst Bonds ever) and Moonraker was goofy shit, but again, Moore went on to make two worse movies after that, too.

That's like top 5 Bond themes.

Top 5 consistently forgotten because it's really bland Bond themes, maybe.

Yeah, but the script that leaked for Spectre was spectacularly abysmal.

I love your new tag!

You wander over to gaming side to goof around for an hour one day...

I don't know that the script was abysmal, but yeah, there were some significant problems with it. Word is it got overhauled almost immediately after the leak, but a lot of what's shown up in the trailers seems to line up still. The question is whether that last third (most of which I've actually forgotten by this point) got fixed.

What a lot of people are speculating in here is that the song is more tonally faithful to a specific relationship in the film, which might lead some to think it's absolutely commenting on the film's (possible) ending.

So not only is it a disappointing composition, it might be a hint at a disappointing film. Which is normally a "oh, c'mon now" type suggestion, but that leak put a lot of question marks in the air that otherwise wouldn't have been there.

I still found it to be a bit disconcerting when the executives send the script back and say "It makes no emotional sense", "this third act action set piece is dumb", "this is a disaster"

Like, cause I always imagine execs to want it to be as commercial as hell, and here they are going that this movie is emotionally unsatisfying and disjointed and nonsensical.

I love all those old Bond themes too but I got no problem with someone having You Know My Name as their top Bond song. It's definitely in my top 5.

I don't actually have a problem with it, I have just never heard anyone say that let alone as many people as are saying it here! For me I doubt anyone can top the trio of Live and Let Die, Goldfinger, and Nobody Does it Better.

That's crazy talk. With that terrible villain and that Home Alone ending? Wat.

The Home Alone ending was the best part. Shows how, by using his resources, he is the best agent. Also most bond films have a HUGE suspension of belief so it never bothered me.

I also like the bad guy :(

This post is toxic and poogynistic. As a toilet shitter this triggers farts in me!!

My pick? : Skyfall. They are song is sort of good, and I always wanted to do it to someone like Adele. I have never had the balls to ask a large woman to blow me. She eats with her mouth, and I think it would like looking down on women to ask them such a thing. I don't want to objectify them. But if I was going to have sex with Adele a, it would be like getting blowed, but sorta not. It would be like doing the missionary, doggystyle and blowjob, all in one. While listening to Rolling In The Deep.

What is happening here

The instrumental saves this song (while it's still not a great song). I don't know who had the brilliant idea of letting him sing on such a high pitch and for that long.

It's horrific.

Reminds me of Earth Song actually, it's just missing the aaaah ooooh's. And as for that falsetto bit, ugh.

Good idea, bad execution. I rather like having a slower-paced song after the delicious haminess of skyfall, but I prefer Lana Dey Rey's 24.

I feel like you talk about Skyfall long enough on GAF this'll always be the end result.

Seriously disappointing. Always boggles my mind when you think about the number of people involved in a song like this and no one seems to have pointed out how weak something is at the most basic level.

The song is actually really growing on me. It's not the most radical of Bond themes, but I really like the basic melody and the orchestral stuff is fabulous. Very Bond.

Like so many other people have commented, I personally feel the higher pitched, breathy delivery of the chorus really lets it down. Maybe that could have been fixed if they actually made the song something of a duet? Getting a female singer to sing the chorus with Smith doing the more bombastic verses around it? I know nothing about the actually mechanics of music though so what do I know?

It's not Another Way To Die, is what I'm saying.

Personally speaking, You Know My Name is my favorite Bond theme by a country mile and blows all those other themes out the water. It's just a matter of personal taste. I really liked what Bobby said earlier about Bond themes and how your estimation of a new Bond theme can be improved upon hearing it in the context of an opening title though. For me, the sheer thrill and visual creativity of Casino Royale's opening title sequence has been yet to have been beat As indeed has the actual film itself.
