Speculate!: PS3 SKUs

Uhhh,

It has more competition than this generation, IMO.

Saturn was viable for quite a while and the N64 was almost tied with the PSOne early on. This generation was a blowout for Sony from beginning to end. In fact, Sony's market share will almost certainly be higher this generation than last.

If I recall correctly, the Saturn barely managed to sell ~2 million systems in the NA while it did fare well in Japan at over 10 million, but bombed in Europe. N64 did well everywhere, by comparison. Outside of Japan, it was a two-horse race. The competition this gen was better, though Sony still maintains its dominance.

If what Kutaragi said is true ("PS3's price won't be affordable to normal households")

No, that was a Peter Moore quote that keeps getting attributed to KK for some reason. The Kutaragi quote was "You should start practicing your hand jobs and mow a lot of lawns next spring during your free time"... Some of the context was probably lost in translation though.

Yep, essentially he said that PS3 will be very expensive, but that people will desire to possess it so hard that they'll work extra hours for gaining the moneys to buy it :lol

No, the whole expensive quote has been blown out of proportion.

Basically he's talking about the desirability of the unit... to paraphrase: "We've made a unit that even we ourselves desire; so desirable infact that even if we priced it higher, people would be willing to work harder in order to obtain it."

Given that quote was originally translated from japanese, it's likely that something was lost in translation, and with the power of the internet and chinese whispers, we've arrived at, PS3 will be so very expensive!

I remember some analysts telling too that it would be very expensive to manufacture so the market prise could be high. But we'll see. I surely hope they approach this matter very aggressively, pricing as low as they can: we are the ones that will get the best benefits from a price war :-)

Analysts have always overestimated the cost for Sony and the cost at launch of their playstation stuff... PS2, PSP... I doubt PS3 will be any different.

But I could be wrong :P let's hope not!
