Spider-Man 1/2 vs Amazing Spider-Man 1/2

Raimi had the best villains and the best Peter.
Webb had the best Spider-Man (marginally).

I'm gonna give it to Raimi on this one, because Webb fucked up on the alternate originstory. Although intriguing, the trailers had more originstory than the final cut of the movie, and that's just bad. Also, Webb managed to make a mess of some of the greatest villains in Spidey-verse.
If Tobey had better comedic timing, the Webb-versions wouldn't even compete.

Even this?

Thats Sony.

Spider-man is bad, Willem Dafoe was great but the Green Goblin power ranger was terrible. Harry (ASM2, not Spider-man 3, let's not mention that) is not much better mind you.
Spider-man 2 is better, because Doc Oc was good, but it's still not great. I can't stand Toby Maguire as Spider-man.

Amazing Spider-man has some weirdness, Peter is much dumber than he should be for example but Garfield is excellent as Spidey he really pulls off the right attitude. I also liked the Lizard despite thinking I would hate him from the previews.
Amazing Spider-man 2 isn't as good as the first one but it has some amazing action scenes (Spidey juggling all the plutonium at the start stands out).

Going for Gwen over MJ was cool too, they seem to be playing the long game with the new movies.

If only Tobey actually portrayed Spider-Man like in the books, Raimi's would have won this, hands down.

As is, Raimi barely won by the virtue of story not being a fucking mess despite Amazing Spider-Man's being closer to comics.

I realize after reading this thread that it's all a matter of opinion, but man, I think the ASM movies, especially 2, are not nearly as good as Raimi's first two. I guess fans of the comic think Garfield is a better Spidey in costume. Okay? He quips a lot I guess, but he's doing it within a garbage movie. And the chemistry between Garfield and Stone exists between them because they're strong actors I guess, but I don't think that means the fictional relationship between Gwen and Peter is all that great.

I don't mean to put anybody down because I'm really just trying to understand where everyone is coming from here, but I feel like the people who prefer the ASM movies to Raimi's are the same kind of people who enjoy or prefer the Star Wars prequels to the originals. They're flashy, and have nonsensical plots with big action set pieces that have little to no bearing on the story that is barely taking place. Maybe all the people who like ASM 2 are little kids. Maybe we just have different tastes. I'm just trying to understand how people even enjoyed sitting through ASM 2 once, let alone analyze it and call it better or comparable to Raimi's Spider-Man 2.

I think the consensus is that both are a mixed bag, each with their own pros and cons. Preference lies with what each expects from a Spider-Man movie and the willingness to overlook the flaws that every movie consistently has.

Thats Sony.
Yeah realized that now derp. 3:15AM stormtrooper is more ditzy than usual.

Bland, but not really forced. Two attractive people being attracted to each other that both happen to share an interest in science isn't really a stretch. What is a stretch is them breaking up and getting back together again in ASM2. But what I was talking about originally was that their chemistry is better than Tobey and Kirsten in the Raimi trilogy. Doesn't mean that how their relationship plays out is better than them, but I think their chemistry is.
There chemistry is better?

Someone did a group sampling of this somewhere out on the great intertubes.

Essentially

If you are over 25, you prefer Reimi's Spiderman
If you are under 25, you prefer the new version

I'm 37, grew up reading ASM and I prefer the new movies by far. While SM2 is a good movie, what Raimi did to DocOc and Spidey (McGuire just plain sucks) makes them so far removed from what the comic is that I just don't buy it.

ASM is, at least, very close to what made Spidey great (as a comic)

I love the hell out of raimi SM1-2. i still hate SM3

I kind of liked TASM1 but TASM2 was a complete mess. It had good action but everything else was horrible

The first films are almost exactly the same to me. They honestly feel like carbon copies.

Spidey 2 > ASM2 for sure. Spidey 2 still remains as one of the best superhero films. The direction is unique and ambitious. Parker's plights are understandable and he earns a lot of sympathy. I do think that the actual Spider-Manning is done extremely well in ASM. We need to take the original trilogy's Parker and ASM's Spidey and mix them together.

Dr. Pepper is the one that sticks out the most in my mind. Also in Spider-Man 2 they have an entire scene dedicated to Joe's Pizza, which I assume is a local restaurant in New York. They only serve Dr. Pepper and pizza though.

They don't serve Dr. Pepper on the current Blu Ray release though. That conveniently placed Dr. Pepper cooler in the pizza place is a totally different brand now that I don't recognize. It was weird. I have no idea if it was changed for the initial blu ray release or just the most current ones.

Team Raimi. They got Jonah Jameson, that's a big plus for me, and spiderman 2 have great character development for Peter Parker. Also Raimi theme on each movies is more relatable to me than Webb.

Though if i have to say, Amazing spiderman have the better one liner, and both movie romance scene is not really my cup of tea.

The Raimi Spider-man films win easily over the Amazing Spider-man reboot films. I say this as someone that did enjoy Amazing Spider-man 2, faults in all. However by comparison the older films were just better. I can't comment on Spider-man 3. It's been a long time since I've seen that and we don't know what AS3 is going to be like. Question. Is there a director's cut of Spider-man 3 or a fan-edit of it?

Going with Raimi.

Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was really bad. Too many bad jokes, and I mean too many. All that movie did for me was confirm that Spider-Man is immortal. What does it take for him to die? I only character I liked in that movie was Harry, and he was pretty much Harry in name only though. I thought this reboot was trying to be more true to the comic.

I see Dr. Pepper in my BD release. It was the first edition box set with all three movies.

Not to my knowledge, no, on either one of them.

Going with Raimi.

Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man 2

To be fair, Peter and a lot of other characters survive some crazy shit in the Raimi films as well. At one point, he jumps off a building without any super powers and just gets up, complaining about his back.

I don't think he lost his powers. That was all in his head.

I didn't find Spider-Man 1 amazing. Not bad either.
Spider-Man 2 was really good, except the part that I can't stand MJ and Parkers self inflicted drama and loss of power in the movie. Hard to rewatch because of these parts. The rest still holds up though.

Amazing Spider-Man 1 had promise in the beginning, has the better origin story, but sadly struggles hard in the end. The last third is just really bad and even before that they managed to build up inconsistencies.
Have not watched ASM2 yet, but so far it goes:

SM1=ASM1<SM2

I don't expect to love ASM2, but I like it's colorful look, so I guess I'll watch it on BluRay.

The fun cameos, wrestling scene, the 'go web go' handwaving scene, rain / MJ alleyway scene, a clearer focal point of Bens death, the brutal Goblin fight, Molina, Simmons as JJ, the train scene....any one of these alone in SM1&2 destroy anything in ASM1&2.

Not even close.

I feel like I'm in bizarro world right now. I really liked the Raimi ones when they came out, but after seeing ASM2 last night, there's no comparison that the Amazing series is far superior. Most importantly, Garfield feels like a real Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Gwen is incredible. Tobey was TOO nerdy and awkward, and just uncomfortable to watch. Kristen Dunst was bland and not believable as MJ. Spider-Man 2 was pretty incredible, but the emotional weight of the events in ASM2 and the dynamics between the characters make it a much more interesting take on the character. Also Spider-man 1 was just ok, while 3 was a fucking atrocity.

Plus, a major theme in the comics is the pain and struggle Peter goes through, which I felt was better portrayed in the Amazing series, so far. Raimi movies were too silly, too slapstick, and too "B". Don't get me wrong, I love Raimi as a director, and it was an interesting take. Amazing just seems so much better, and I'm super hyped for ASM3.

BTW, I'm 26, and so I was roughly 13 (?) when Spider-man 1 came out, and I still think the new ones are much better.

I agree with you. It's this way in both movie series.
It's just that after Electro took over the grid, he definitely became the most powerful villain in any of the spider-man movies to date. Not only that, but his power to boot was the deadliest of all, electricity.

Webb's films had terrible and I do mean terrible villains.

The first ASM film had one of the WORST villains in superhero film history, the Lizard really had no real motivation to be evil at all, he acted the way he acted just because we needed a villain for the film. Electro while not nearly as bad as the Lizard but his development is still really freaking shallow.

Tobey Maguire will always be my favorite Peter Parker, the scene in Spider-Man 2 where he tells Aunt May the truth of how he was indirectly responsible for uncle Ben's death was one of the best moments in any Spider-Man film to date, and I don't think the writers of the ASM films are good enough to replicate it.

So yes, I like Raimi's version of Spider-Man.
