One thing I noticed was that not too many people throw grenades. My teams weren't winning games but I was catching a lot of multikills with them. They help paint dangerous areas too.

I learned that halfway through the hour. I was just hanging on top with my sniper with rollers circling below.
The grenade has an indicator which shows its arch and where it'll land.

Jump should be on the L Button, I honestly always forgot I could use it and when I need it I ended up dying.

The moment I learned what button jump was assigned to (X), I kept my thumb over it at most times. I suspect platforming will be critical in this, probably even more so on advanced maps.

Roller is not OP. You just got to know how to maneuver around them.

Didn't save the enemies from me at all. When I brought my roller out, I was going where I was going, and nothing they did was going to stop me. They run, I ignore them and claim more terriotry. They try to fight, I one shot them. They try to go to a high place, I ult them. They try to fight me at midrange, I stay on the other side of an object and claim territory. They try to ambush me around a corner, I one shot them.

Press + before searching for a match and you can access controller options from there.

Thank.

You.

Bro.

I probably should have went back to gyro controls after playing with stick a few rounds. You can actually quick turn with them, there was several moments where I wish I could.

This is the biggest advantage of gyro controls. I switched to stick after a few games, but being able to turn around quickly is a great option in some situations.

My impressions:

My favorite weapon was the regular splattershot. It had better range than the splattershot jr. Good rate of fire. Good for covering an area and for taking down enemies from a decent distance; especially rollers. I was regularly getting the most points for my team.

Gyro aiming is great. No idea why anyone would turn it off. You use the sticks for sweeping camera movements and the gyro gives you a lot more control than a stick for fine aiming.

Yeah. Gyro aiming was my go-to and I got good at aiming and taking other squid faster than using twin stick. I did give twin stick a shot though and found it's really not my thing.

That was a lot of fun. Was regularly placing first with the Splattershot and the Splattershot Jr. Only played with the Splatroller once, but it was on a team of all rollers lol...we got destroyed. Played with the Splatcharger once as well, but man it is not good to use gyro with, at least from one match. It needs some stable aiming.

And rollers are anything but OP. Their ranged attacks take forever to come out, so if you're using a rapid fire gun, you're pretty much set.

Gyro was weird cause that was the only way to look up. It's okay, but I didn't try it without gyro to say anything about just the right stick.

I really had no time to look down at the map outside of rare times where I remember the map when I'm safe, or if I want to super jump (which I didn't do outside of spawn yet). I can't see how people are going to say voice chat isn't needed when it is this fast-paced, but there is this map you have to look down away from the main screen to see useful info.

Can't play in the morning session tomorrow, but will play in the afternoon one.
Also the fact that you can see where the other team is going to land when jumping is hilarious.
I love it. You think you just gonna super jump to where the action is without any setback?

I dunno how anyone thinks no voice chat is a good idea. This is totally the type of game where a team with a direction and a dynamic strategy will be the most effective. You don't even necessarily need to be good at killing people thus far to do well in the rankings, you just need to know where it makes sense to focus your attention. 4 people running to the middle of the map just spraying 1 dude is not actually a strategy even though it happened so many times.

I need to remember to use that super jump thing. I keep going back to base and just swimming to where I was. Waste of time all because I'm too dumb to use it haha

Yes I do :3

Have I got you on my friend list yet Pad?

No we don't have each other. I'm Enop123. Send me a request or I can send you one.

Rollers are basically shotguns.

Don't get too close to them but they're sitting ducks at midrange.
If you're in an area with a decent amount of your own paint, it takes nothing to run away from people shooting you. You swim way faster then the gunner will be able to run and it's pretty easy to get away.

At the end of the day, this is a kids' game, so it's not people calling each other names, it's children being harassed by random adults for not playing a video game correctly. It's drama Nintendo probably wants to avoid.
I mean, if that's what Nintendo wants to make it, then that's their vision. Certainly degrades how much I want the game though.

Had a blast. Cant wait to play more. Definitely need more play time to really form a solid opinion on the mechanics.

See you in the Splatter Zone!

Did anyone find themselves falling into a role on the team? I noticed in a lot of the matches, I would just end up being the "cover the map with paint" guy and my allies would do a lot more killing. I would regularly be at the top of the rankings, but my kill/death numbers would always end up being really small or unremarkable compared to some people.

Not that I mind. Sneaking into the enemies section and taking it over with your paint is so satisfying. Ninja mode is the best.
Haha that's just people thinking the game should be destroy the other player when it's mainly cover the territory while maybe half the team should focus on defense which is to take out the opposing team.

I had that happen with a couple of teams I was on early on in the hour but by my later matches, most people smartened up.

  • Repetitive gameplay and matches if the release game has 4 maps, 4 classes, and a few weapons (please correct if I am wrong). I understand there is planned post-release support.

The game is launching with 5 maps, and there are no "classes". There's three types of main weapons but they come in a bunch of different styles of weapons that are tailored for different approaches, plus the ability to equip loads of perks to support your style. Each weapon has it's own individual subweapon and special weapon as well that are chosen depending on the best balance it provides the main weapon (e.g. Splatchargers have the best grenades and are invaluable against rollers).

This game is far too fast paced and frenetic for voice chat. Some of you can keep crying about the lack of voice chat, but I think the decision was 100% correct.

I definitely agree with this. If the matches were longer voice chat could be useful for telling your teammates which area to cover, but if you have competent teammates they should be able to tell from the map.

Rollers are basically shotguns.

Don't get too close to them but they're sitting ducks at midrange.

The only time rollers got me was from behind. All I did was back up and shoot them in the face, use bombs, swim away or sit in the ink silently and pop up behind them.

The controls - once the gyrosensor was turned off - were perfect. The game just needs a little bit of balancing, since at the moment the roller is the way to go at Turf War matches. But yeah, after an underwhelming Gamescom playtest this has ended any scepticism on my behalf. What actually impressed me the most is the fact that the game ran entirely lag-free as soon as I got into matches. The netcode was - from what I could gather - fucking amazing. Respect!

Oh, here's a bit from a match I had... doesn't anyone just LOVE these kind of ending results? Need to sort out the entire source material I recorded throughout the last hour.

I'm definitely looking forward to the other play tests today. Nintendo, you did it again!

The game feltextremely fun and fresh! Very easy to get into also. I remembered people feared that too many players would spend too much time trying to get kills rather than inking turf, but I didn't found that to be the case. Everyone pretty much worked toward a common goal. On that note, I don't think the lack of voice chat is the deal-breaker some made it out to be. It felt like it was over too soon, but I had a blast!

Also, was I the only one playing squid jump while waiting for the lobby to fill? ;D

No support for the pro controller kind of ruined it for me. I just don't see myself spending $60 on this game as it stands. Please add pro controller support Nintendo,

Thinking the voice chat would be counter productive due to the Japanese presence. I played with a lot of Japanese players.

In MH3U we managed to have voice chat with EU and NA sharing servers. Which means you might jump into a lobby with someone not speaking your language, but we still managed to survive somehow. Using it as an excuse not to have voice chat is terrible.

The moment I learned what button jump was assigned to (X), I kept my thumb over it at most times. I suspect platforming will be critical in this, probably even more so on advanced maps.

The roller's role would be a lot different if maps were more jump and platform-centric. On the rig map there were those big open areas that were often almost ignored by unskilled players that you could totally dominate if you control them, which was most easily done by the roller.

Speaking of spawn camping, I had a moment where the other team basically did that and put that whale thing right in front of it lol that really sucked for me. Took a while to get past the point where they inked into our base.

Send me a request Pad! I'll add you when I get back on my Wii U tomorrow :D
