The thing i realized this time was that you really need to use the environment, dont get in a head on firefight, stealth is the number one most important aspect of pvp.

You see someone coming, ika up behind a corner, they run past and boom they're dead. In fact going ika for a few seconds once you're out of view is a surefire way to get someone to forget about you.

This game is sooooo goood!!!

splatoon stealth game of the year

I hate how there's not really anything to do in a Roller vs. Roller situation except just accept that it'll be a double KO.

And the thing I hate most about double KOs is that the game seems to randomly decide who pops second and splatters their ink, and it seems to always randomly choose me, giving the other team the advantage.

You flick your pant. If they're charging you, that will kill them.

Early game play reminds me very heavily of Gears of War in that Rollers (Shotgun) and Chargers (Sniper) dominate their own spaces and compliment each other well. I've found that the other two guns feel strangely inaccurate mid to close range than they should despite the wide spread. Their specials seem to make up for things, but I can't help but think that the Roller's abilities are vastly more consistent close-up.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit though in part due to the fact that I adore Gears. lol

Okay, participated in both sessions so far, together with my kid, and it's been great. We literally ripped the gamepad from each other's hands, match after match but only for half an hour each session.

I have one question: in the direct they were talking about three different weapons for each set but I only could fire two of them.

ZR fires main weapon, R fires grenades/whatever, but what fires the third weapon? Thanks!

Once your bar fills out (by inking ground) you can activate your special weapon by clicking the right stick.

Are we sure that painted walls don't count towards the score? I don't think I've ever seen the total percentage even close to 100% despite looking like total coverage on the minimap.

Yeah they don't count. For one the game specifies "ground" when talking about which counts. On top of that the minimap would be a lot less useful. It's hard to cover an area 100%. Those add up.

I honestly don´t feel people think the roller is OP, its just a ton of fun and extremely satisfying and you more thinking to beat it other than "keep running and shooting", so we feel its really strong. Its not like anyone is ACTUALLY asking to nerf it for real, at least not yet =P.

Would it be possible to get a loadout that has roller and bubbler. I think that would be broken seeing how supers are charged by how much new ink you put on the ground.

Still love the roller tho.

I think there are even more than that; Nintendo's Twitter and Tumblr stuff showed off a heavier Shooter called the 5.2 Gal that wasn't featured in the Direct, and I'm pretty sure there were one or two weapons in the shop that weren't named or showcased.

Maybe they are like the Paintbrush and might come Post-Launch?

Love this game! Only played with roller but had a great time! First thing I did was switch off gyro controls. Gyro sucks and is unneeded. Overall impression is that chargers suck, reg guns are fine and rollers are slightly better. You're quite dependant on the quality of your teammates though since no communication. I won every match but two in which I had teammates with rollers that stuck to my path. Overall I'm glad I ordered it.

Will be hard to balance playing this and Witcher though. Still need to finish Bloodborne as well. Great year for gaming sofar:)

I know so many swear by gyro here, but having played with them off this time vs on last time, definitely prefer non-gyro. So much smoother and so much less hassle. I did much better this time around than I did yesterday. I may try gyro again with the next hour, but I don't know, think I'm fine without it.

Some observations:

-With or without the gyro, the sniper gun is just something I can't get the hang of. It doesn't really seem to shot much paint, and it just seems like it's harder to get a good shot off than the other guns. I feel like I just don't get it.

-I'm going to echo with people who think the roller isn't OP. It can really suck when you turn a corner and one is just in your face there, and you don't have time to react. But in general, I don't think there that bad. I was in a team that had two Jrs, one sniper, and a Splattershot against a team of three rollers and a sniper, and we pretty much wrecked them. I think that was actually the game where I scored the highest yet.

-By chance, is there some kind of ability or something that I'm missing that allows you to see where the other team is super jumping? I'm wondering, because there was these two games back-to-back where I just kept getting killed wherever I super jumped. It got to a point where I just stopped using it. Felt like it was way too often to be coincidental.

-Another thing that may just be coincidental, but am I crazy or are the games almost always lopsided? It always feels like I'm in games where one team just stomps the other. I can only think of one game of all the sessions I played between today and yesterday where the win percentage was within like 15%.

When you super jump there is a small ring that appears before you land that the enemy can see. I found a lot of rollers would be on top of them ready to kill.

I had the complete opposite. We had a full team of rollers and we totally destroyed the other team.

Loved the demo. Can't wait to play some more later on.

I was kind of surprised how "heavy" your character is, considering that the game encourages you to switch into squid mode to get around the stage. I just wish that you could switch the controls to other buttons because I totally had forgotten you could jump the whole time that I was playing.

There is a beacon where you're going to land which everyone can see. If one pops up by someone they can just stand there and wait to kill you when you land.

I swear I did it twice. First time was an accident then second time I did it on purpose.

Huh. I guess I'll keep trying then.

I see the Splattershot junior as an SMG, the Splattershot is an assault rifle, the roller is a shotgun, and the charger is a sniper.

the tops of crates and walls and stuff count. some of them are near impossible to get to without splatting a bunch of platforms in advance but you can splat them

It seems like that given that I can't find the Splattershot Jr. on this.

Oh man, I have video of me getting a sick quad kill with the roller. I wanna make a webm of it...

Do it.

Not true, a roller was able to kill me (roller too) by me shooting from a small distance, so he avoided to make contact with me this way (sorry for my bad english).

I'd like to see a "request reinforcements" command that flashes a small icon on the screen or something. It's the one glaring communication omission that just doesn't make sense to me. Let me tell my teammates when I need help defending or attacking an area, or that they should warp to me to help cover enemy ink.

Flank them by doing any of the following

Diving into ink and sneaking up behind them

Use your suction grenade

Use the killer wail

Jump their roller

And/or use the flick from a distance

Sometimes it is worth it to take the quick suicide doubke kill, but usually you're better off attempting to flank and kill the enemy roller

Missed the first round so I just played it for the first time. GOD this game is fun. They have something truly special in their hands.

Special weapon, it's only usable when the gauge in the top right is fully filled. You fill it by inking the map or splatting people, and once it's charged you use it by pressing down the right analogue stick.

The bubbler activates immediately, but the rest change your subweapon and you have to use R to deploy it.

also being in squid form, building up momentum as you go forward, jumping, transforming back to a humanoid while in mid-air, and then immediately shooting downward while still in the air may be one of the most satisfying things I've done in a video game

this game just feels great. the controls, the ink graphics, and the sound design really make this game feel satisfying.

So satisfying. One match last night, I was on higher ground and I jumped shooting straight down and killed the enemy. They were trying to hide in a blind spot and about to set up a grenade on me.

I really don't like the Killer Whale. Takes forever to set up and its cone of influence seems super narrow. Just not a weapon I'm interested in using.

Also in that one map where you start next to eachother kinda. The one with the containers and the seaside setting. Is it actually possible to get to the enemy spawn area? Seems it's too high to get up there.. I was thinking maybe the moving platform that passes by in the middle area goes there, but it's soooo slow and the one time I got on I accidentally fell off.

This game is just pure colorful summer fun. Reminds me of being a kid in the 90s running around a theme park during the hottest part of summer.

You can use your grenade, special attack or be smart and circle around the opponent instead.

Isn't that what up on the D-pad does?

I'm actually enjoying the roller a lot more then I thought I would. I usually use shotguns in other shooters and I'm more focused on objectives than raw kills, so this weapon's the best of both worlds for me. Even when my team lost, I was regularly 1st or 2nd on my team.

Oh one thing that was annoying was jumping and landing after spawning and getting killed immediately. I think there should be a second of invulnerability when you jump right after respawning. All though they probably want you to actually be aware of where the enemy is I guess.

There's been a few times where I just get punked by rollers jumping in and killing me immediately. I'm sure as time goes on more people will learn to be a little careful with their jumps and people will learn to murder those jumper inners super hard.

I'm also amazed how many things I'm learning by reading the thread. Jumping over rollers, superjumping from anywhere, and some other shenanigans. It's great.

Heh. I fell asleep without setting an alarm yet somehow woke up at exactly 4AM; so I got in another hour of splattoon.

Dominated almost every match with the splattershot. I came in first or second on my team every time. I only lost a couple of matches where my teammates weren't doing a good job laying ink. Great game. It'll probably be really intense once we can start setting up deliberate teams.

I think I played on your team some. My young daughters were taking turns so there were definitely times where you weren't getting much help, lol. They had a ton of fun though and were disappointed when the demo ended.

Edit: Username was Skullboy

I forgot all about using grenades lol. Do rollers even have grenades? Also, didn't superjump either.

But even without using them, the game has enough depth.

Yep, stealth works brilliantly in this. If you move slowly, you're completely concealed.

I was so hyped to use the charger...

... only to find out that I'm absolute garbage with it.

It's easy to think that it's going to function much like any other mp sniper rifle, but the game is so fast-paced that you have to keep up with it. Camping's not really an option, you have to move a lot, ideally moving from high ground to high ground, although the stealth/climbing really does help a Charger user.

Well, that was a lot harder than at 4am, but I've finally got a handle on the Splattergun jr! Might like it a bit more than the Roller now actually.

Still not into the Charger though. I play too aggressively for it, and it's rubbish at both short range and for area coverage.

Really hope there's more variety in the main game though. It's hugely fun, but I'm already very bored of those two maps. Hopefully the single player content has some decent meat to it, and there's a decent number of multiplayer modes. Saying more stuff is coming really won't be good enough if this is all it's going to really be for months.

Still excited though.

I would welcome be able to ping on maps like in Mobas.
It should be enough if teamates don't have tunnel vision or be brain afk in casual matches.

Thanks for the tip, I will try it next time.

Maybe I imagined it, but I think the C'mon! thing on the D-Pad might actually do that?

The roller has a medium range attack.

Also if you're quick you can maneuvre around the enemy roller so that the edge of yours hits them but theirs doesn't hit you. Only pulled that off once though.

Up on the D-pad.

It was a joke about Little Mac, not the roller. I had no problem with the roller.

Wasn't directed specifically at you, just used your reply because there is a counter. Mass people here already yelling OP without seeing the majority of weapons and attachments is typical NG though.
