Imagine the trolling that would happen if friendly fire was on. =P It could become a 5v3 situation, and the guy who spawned in the front when the match starts would get splatted really fast from all of the guns starting up behind him.

Then they would splat you, superjump back to base, as splat you as you were spawning. =P Team spirit! They would have to turn off the friendly fire in the spawn in order to avoid those situations.
We also can't forget that teams are rearranged every match. Gotta splat that dude on your team who kept on splatting you that last match when he was on the opposing team. =P

instead of Choosing sides Cats or Dogs players should be Drafted evenly

You pretty much unlock weapons each level you get and also you can do the Single Player first to unlock all the weapons from there. The SP campaign is a decent way to learn the basics.
You can buy clothes from the shops once you reach Level 4.
The one skill you really need is in the Shoes - Ink Resistance is just too good to skip I think. The rest of the main skills depend on your play style.
What gun do you use?
You get more abilities (perks) with higher rank gear (3 star). You get better ranked gear as you level up or you can inspect players around the plaza and order their gear by hitting y.
You unlock weapons at 4 and every level after that.
Edit: I hate that other sniper. So campy.
More weapons unlock for each level. Some weapon blueprints can only be found in the Single Player campaign. Some weapon skins are also only available through amiibo challenges.
Different gear have different amount of sub abilities as standard (which affects the price). Gear changes daily in the shops. Sub abilities are set (randomly) when you have earned enough points in the online battles.
Spyke can help you with your gear as well. Judd can give you money if you play well, and gives lots of useful tips.

There's now a James in our room but he's a pretty big douche. I don't know if this guy is on my friends list though.
I couldn't make up my mind to either go for the guy dodging me or the free kill that's about to land lol. Good job on the juke though.
Confused. I'm level 7 but only have the scattershot Jr available to me. In the single player I just beat the clam boss so I'm on world 3?
Edit: doh, you buy them from the shop I didn't see.
SP has only one weapon unless you have amiibo.
I think I will buy the Kraken Amiibo for the SP

This isn't true at all. There are many weapons in Single player that you can unlock.
I finished the single player and didn't unlock anything, how are you able to unlock another main weapon there without amiibo?
I think he means specifically in Single Player though, you can't change your weapon without amiibos
These are the weapon you should be able to buy in the shop at level 7:
Level 1 - Splattershot Jr. (standard config)
Level 2 - Splattershot
Level 2 with 1st boss scroll - Custom Splattershot Jr.
Level 3 - Splat Roller and Splat Charger
Level 4 - Tentatek Splattershot
Level 4 with 2nd boss scroll - Kelp Splat Charger
Level 5 - .52 Gal
Level 6 - Classic Squiffer
Level 7 - Krak-On Splat Roller
Level 7 with 3rd boss scroll - Aerospray MG
EDIT: The weapon shop only affects online multiplayer and things in Inkopolis. Octo Valley has it own rules and currency.
