Splatoon Raiders announced for Switch 2

Just announced on a video within Nintendo Today, a Switch 2 exclusive Splatoon spinoff called Splatoon Raiders. Not much to go off yet, will update thread with a YouTube version of the video when available…

Also a free update to Splatoon 3 with Switch 2 enhancements coming June 12

Updated to English trailer

Anything to go off of but a title?

One of my favorite IPs but they need to mix it up a bit after 3 similar entries, so a spin-off sounds good. They could do a RPG, a SRPG, anything really.

Trailer is short but has a bit of gameplay, the character crash on an island and look like they build a base. You find some sort of robot companion. So maybe an open world survival type thing? They were very clear to call it a spin off and it's a full game, not a DLC

3rd kits announced too and a new map with a free update. I always believed (I actually didn't).

But yeah really glad they finally gave us a spinoff. The franchise has immense potential for various gameplay styles, as shown with Side Order and roguelite.

I know this is going to generate some heat and that's okay, but I can't think of a series that's more oversaturated than Splatoon.

As an Animal Crossing player, it feels like it's constantly shafted in favour of this series because they share so many devs between the AC/Splatoon teams, and the way New Horizons was just dropped despite being one of the best selling games ever is just... lol.

3 Games in 11 years is over saturated? 🤣

Really need an English video, sounds like the announcer is explaining what the game is but no subtitles. Looks like a survival shooter. Glad they slapped spin-off on it, with the way people like to confuse Switch 2 news and report it as something misleading and negative, those details have become necessary.

3 Games in 11 years is over saturated? 🤣

People say this a lot because Splatoon 2 still had a lot of active players when 3 came out, not realizing that the two games are five years apart.

Yes.

And in fact, what you said isn't really accurate.

Splatoon 3 released in 2022.
Splatoon 1 was 2015.

So it's 3 games in 7 years.

Animal Crossing - one game in 8 years.

Sales numbers for Splatoon 3 waned significantly compared to Splatoon 2 in the West. Yes, it still did extremely well in Japan and is doing well relatively worldwide, but there is a sense of saturation in my eyes, and some others.

So this is the first announcement after the Switch 2 launch? This might be a good strategy; drip feeding new stuff over a longer period than all at once.

I played Side Order again recently (full 100% unlocks this time) and chuckled thinking where and how they may take the concept in the future.
Men_in_Boxes isn't here to speak for himself, but I'm sure he'd agree a Splatoon Extraction shooter would be a big hit!

I don't know. I would rather have a direct for new titles. If this Is how they introduce Deluxe content or free updates. Then that is cool. I just don't want them doing everything inside the Nintendo today app

i cant take these dumb narrated Nintendo trailers, its so cringe, they think their fans are 8, but in reality they are bald, fat and over 30+

this is the fourth Splatoon game in 10 years, what am I missing?

people's brains can't fathom that some Nintendo franchises still operate on a schedule that was perfectly normal before budgets and dev times got bloated to the extreme.

back in gen 5, 6 and 7 it was perfectly normal to have a full trilogy of games on a single system, and noone would call it oversaturated or noteworthy.

but now that everything got bloated into oblivion and people expect 1 new game every 5 years, it's hard to fathom for some that Nintendo has a franchise whose budget and dev time isn't bloated like crazy, and which can release games at a cadence closer to how it worked pre-PS4/Xbox One generation.

just to paint a picture here... there were 8 Resident Evil games that released on Gen6 consoles. 3 mainline games, 1 remake and 4 spin-offs.
all between 2000 and 2005

Really hope they give the mechanic protag a bunch of new movement options, Splatoon has the potential to be the best 3D platformer on the market, I legitimately like its movement better than 3D Mario's. Side Order's additions like the drone gliding and the enemy drops making you jump super high were nice but hopefully they go even further here.

So Pikmin but better.

I would say it's very weird to announce through an app but not officially through news outlets. But again, its Nintendo and weird is their middle name.

I'm in for singleplayer Splatoon though

Looked at the trailer again. They are clearly stranded, so I wonder if Raiders is a survival/crafting & base building type thing. It's a popular trend on PC.

Nintendo's marketing research begs to differ.
In Japan you are considered worthless as a potential customer once you become a wage slave, that's why Pokemon will never have a mature story-line. To the chagrin of neckbeards everywhere.

and yet...

The Nintendo Switch has sold an estimated 35.69 million units in Japan as of April 2025
Rest of the World 117 million units sold as April 2025.

Those middle age fat neckbeards wage slaves are the ppl who maintain Nintendo alive.

This game is going to sell more than MH Wilds on PS5 in Japan. The Splatoon franchise is huge in Japan.

Splatoon games sales history
Splatoon 1 for Wii U - 1.79m
Splatoon 2 for Switch 1 - 5.26m
Splatoon 3 for Switch 1 - 7.1m

Damn. As much as I like what I saw, my hopes for Splatoon 4 just poofed. It will be a lot longer than I'm hoping for a new game.

The spinoff however does look really nice and I'm still glad it uses the shooting mechanics as a central point. The amount of times I heard Splatoon turned based game! Made me wanna hurl. Splatoon is a shooter first and foremost.

Really hoping the Switch 2 update fixes the peer to peer connections a bit more.

I kinda bet that Splatoon 4 will be a bigger jump than any of the previous entries, so they need to pad the time between releases with this.

after how similar the first 3 games were they kinda need to find something that changes things up for the 4th one
