Split/Second Demo Out Now on XBLM

Holy effing shit.

This game looks gorgeous.

People that are worried about the PS3 version... Don't be... it runs and looks super smooth.

Also, barely escaping a crashing plane is awesome.

I'm not really feeling this.

- it feels slow (I also think the framerate is not constant 30fps)
- the handling of the car is kinda sluggish
- I don't think this looks as good as Burnout Paradise
- not alot is happening except for the explosions

Burnout is still faster and more excited. I guess I will continue to stick with that and see what NFS by Criterion will deliver. I don't consider Blur at all because that just looks like Mario Kart with real cars.

The complaints about the heavy handling are kind of ironic, because the handling was so difficult in the E3 demo I was constantly running into the walls like a bumper car. Drifting was next to impossible for me. Other people were doing perfect runs, so it was clear that there was a learning curve. The new controls are much more forgiving, but after having it both ways I think the PGR style controls fit the game better. It controls more like Burnout right now but the demo didn't have that game's intensity. Maybe playing online with different car types will help alleviate that.

The more time I spend with the demo, the more I like it. Im really anxious to see how online will work and how the lobbies will be set up. Could really make or break the game.

So instead of cars being fully crappy, they've fixed it so they're only halfway crappy? :lol

i wish the actual wrecks/cars looked as good as the enviroment. also bumping into cars and car to car interaction feels limp, it's almost like they should have gone the trackmania route if it's really just about you and the track.

From the demo, it's not as awesome as I expected, but still fun. I'm surprised it doesn't look as least as good as Burnout Paradise.

What? I think it looks miles better and more detailed... It only doesn't run at 60fps... (I think).

The only thing hurting the game for me (might be because it's just a demo) is the lack of personality.

I gave up Pure because of that too...

It might be because I played Forza 3 right before this demo, but the framerate in the demo really bothered me. It got less distracting after awhile, but it's probably my main complaint right now.

At first I just thought it was fun, but now I see the "strategy" of the game. On the first lap I didn't use any of the power-ups, then I decided to use it to go down the airport. I was at 6th place, I activated the "power play" (IIRC) and boom, 6 cars destroyed! :lol

Got in first place right out the bat. :lol

I think that's exacerbated by the camera shaking. I hope you can turn that effect off in the final game.

I was the opposite, before demo i was hyped and after it...

The races are pretty boring when they boil down to just "drive around third place until last lap and then activate a killer move and take first place. TADAA!"

And the handling is pretty Burnout, should be a tad bit more realistic, more like Flatout so it would have some skill involved :D

I would want to try a multiplayer demo too to see how that works out.

The game looks to be pretty awesome, but I fear for the "explosions and tricks" they can get old pretty quickly after a few races.

But it was fun, the best moment was when the I saw the airplane falling from the sky directly to hit me, and dodged it barely, one of the best moments in any racer ever for me. So awesome. :lol :lol

This is awesome so far :D I played/won the demo 4 times in a row, never got the same route twice, managed a time around 4'23" and a 7" lead on arrival. Sure, the car feels heavy, but I like it. I can't wait for the full game.

:lol :lol I literally screamed "HOOOLYYY SHIIITTTT" when a air plane came crashing down on me and I managed to avoid it

great little demo!

edit: the demo is lil' bit too easy though

edit2: heh, my personal best was 4.09 but my bro beat it with 4.01, cheez

I guess, if not being sideways for half the race means the handling is crappy.

I'll be getting this for the PC so I'm sure people will mod the hell out of it. Also, 60fps.

downloaded it from UK store ,it's very decent but with many many flaws , will buy it for sure when it's at half price or something.

it's very good looking game , decent handling for the car ( not good but ok ) , the concept of power play is kinda cool but it did nothing more than that unfortunately ( maybe because of the airport stage of the demo ? )

but if feel like "QTE" version of Blur/Burnout , I tried one race without using Power play and it was fucking boring and felt way underpowered , so I guess the races will turn out to mindless "be lets charge PP and spam them " meh , and taping L2 for drifting guaranteed! is dump dump idea.

Burnout Paradise = open-world with shit tons going on , it also look as good ( car models wise ) , plus run 60FPS and 720p , this game can only pray to god and dream to be like it.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It looks better than Burnout Paradise, overall. Car models are indeed about the same, but the environnements looks way more detailed (it's not an open world, etc... I know, I know). I was very impressed by how it looks. Explosions, and a shit ton of particle effects looked great too.

I love the way it looks too, but Burnout Paradise is still much more impressive technically. Let's not forget the awesome deformation routines and the day/night system (dynamic shadows ftw), among the other stuff already mentioned.

Also Burnout has more sparks = instant win!

The only fault I see on it is the local MP. Only two players. I say, Blur is gonna have 4.

I found this game really fun, but as many say, the first lap doesn't count, wait for the second lap to activate the power up and win. Ah, and I didn't find some kind of "counter". Neither i found a way to keep the first place at the end. I am at first place at almost the end of the race, but someone is coming behind with a higher speed. I have three power ups, but I can't use them because the rival is behind me. He pass in me and I finish on second place. Sad.

I absolutely loved it. Will be picking up after the demo. I'm really suprised to see so many negative/disappointed comments. It just worked so well for me. I don't think I could think of a complaint.

From the very off I was in to it. The handling whilst initially felt sluggish for the first 2 seconds, after that the driving was a pleasure. Controlled really nicely. Took a bit longer to get a grip of the drifting but again it's all second nature now.

Graphically, it's very nice. The lighting is wonderful and lots of details. I love the way the powerplays affect the course and being able to open/close shortcuts is a fun mechanic, especially if you manage to wreck a car in the process.

There's also a lot more to the tracks than you initially realise. I destroyed a part of the road that takes you underground and there after I opened open yet another route which enables you to finish the lap faster. Could be a lot of strategy in opening the right route to cut seconds off your time. I think initially I was doing 4:45 before getting that down to 4:05 with various route changes.

Overall I really liked the power plays. And there's a nice depth to it, either use a quick Lvl1 to take out 1/2 cars or wait and save it for something bigger. I managed to take out 4 cars with one explosion and my friend did a 5x. Very satisfying when you pull something like that off. Can't wait to see what else there is and having played the course various times, seeing something like the plane come down the runway towards you, never got old.

After reading a few comments about being first made the game boring, I'd have to disagree. There's always the risk of someone setting off an explosion to take you out so you've always got that worry on your shoulders. Being first was never something I found boring. Neither did I think the game was too slow or felt it needed a turbo boost. You don't need any of that here I found.

I think this is the best demo I've played in a long time. I couldn't stop playing it last night. I also think it's the best arcade style racer in many years. It was just so fun and exciting to play. Really can't wait for the full game but man, the 21st is going to be mad with Modnation and RRD all out too. Heaven.

Actually one complaint... no full game replays?

It's a shame that the demo wasn't multiplayer, I have a feeling this is going to be absolutely insane once you get some of the best cars and a bunch of real people in a race.

The graphics are pretty impressive on PS3. Disney is picking up some good titles recently.
They own the studio, so it's more like "developing" rather than "picking up." But yeah, this is definitely a good one.

My feelings exactly. Especially compared to a pretty robust Blur multiplayer demo, Split/Second did provide a pretty bare-bones demo. One car, one level, not even the menu of the game is there. The more I play the demo though, the more I get the hunch that the online aspect of Split/Second will be some good fun. Im definitely looking forward to all the racers this month with this, Blur, and Modnation Racers.

Any word on a PC demo?

yeah kind of interested to see how this will look. i really like the colours on the PS3 version so hopefully on the PC it will be pretty stunning.

the way it played out was very different the two times i played it, pretty neat. the tower falling down and the plane landing on you are both awesome

Dell has this available for preorder for $39.99 on consoles, $29.99 on PC. And free super slow shipping!

LINK

Amazon offer the PC version for $39 + $10 Credit ( so that count as $29.99 I guess )

Uh, this game was very promising... until I played the demo. :(

1) 30 FPS. Sorry, but no. Graphics are ugly. After Pacific Rift, this looks... bad. No motion blur either.

2) Jaggies. Everywhere.

3) Sense of speed. There isn't any. No boost option. Cars move too slowly.

4) The only thing here that isn't present in any other racer released... well, ever, is the destruction. And that's not really anything bursting with innovation.

Very boring for me. Skipping this one.

Agree. Going to skip this one, and get Modnation instead.

yup , that was a major problem when I decided to do a PP-free race , it felt so fucking boring and there is nothing you can do at all, it mean no strategy for you , charge the PP gauge and use them , driving skills/abilities/overtake/your brain are all thrown from the window.

Blur for me , but then again I love to give lord Robert Kotick my money <3

30 FPS and shitty IQ not bothering you? :lol

Not really in this game. I think aliasing is within the norm (not GOWIII-awesome but neither BFBC2-shit) and I wasn't expecting anything above 30fps to begin with. I like the color density a lot as well as the collapsing animations and I'm intrigued by the Power Play mechanics. Also like the post processing effects going on (blur IS there), the flares and stuff like that. Looks like an enjoyable arcade racer to me. I don't understand the hate.

Also I bet I can finish the first 3 races in Split/Second by the time you enter your first one in ModNationRacers :P

Edit - I also have a soft spot for developers who achieve parity so I like to support them. ;) We'll see about Blur... not really optimistic about that one.

Burnout looks better than this, is open world, and runs at twice the framerate. This looks pretty good though.

You can load and finish a race in 15-20 secs in S/S? Sounds like a bore :D

I just pre-ordered at Dell, I have not even tried the demo yet.

I can see much hasn't changed on the gaming side. It's a brief demo of a game that looks like it has lots of multiplayer potential based on the number of tracks and config options. That # of tracks will definitely have an effect on how much single player longevity it has but I'm interested, fun little demo. In my second race when I got a level two, blew up the entire airport on the first lap and then on the second lap dodged a crashing airliner I was hooked... now will that interest stay long term? Not so sure... but I 'll definitely be checking it out upon release. I also couldn't tell if the AI was only going after me or each other as well. Hopefully it's the later.

Tried out the PS3 demo, it was pretty awesome. Yeah it's jaggy and doesn't live up to the bullshots obviously, but it's good looking and pretty fun. I'd like to try out the PC version, 60fps will probably do wonders for the game. The power play stuff works a lot better than I thought it would. Cons I have is the so-so sense of speed which strangely enough does not improve in first-person and the drifting which is not all that to my liking.
