[SPOILER THREAD] Suicide Squad

Okay, after just seeing TDK again on TV I have to say I much prefer Leto Joker. The constant tongue and lip smacking, especially in the interrogation scene, got old fast. Ledger does have him beat in the laughs though.
The tongue thing is because he's obsessed with the scars in his mouth. It's a character driven tic. Better than growling out of the blue and bobbing around like a parody of a feral animal for no reason in particular.

This is the first movie I've seen where I can say in all seriousness that the end credits were the best part.
That's actually not unreasonable. I'm not sure if I agree, but I do love the first part of the credits.

Soundtrack editing was amateur hour, most jarring part of the film imo. Cara is bae though, would have liked more Enchantress action.

i thought it was really cool honestly. it makes him look more like he doesn't/shouldn't belong in our world.

it kind of raises a question though of how would he use his speed in public as barry without freaking everybody out or going unnoticed.

That is one aspect of TV Flash that I hate, it should be very very obvious when Flash is rolling hard in the paint

yea every bit of movement sets of electricity and affects things around him.

TV Flash is consider to be a "Blur" and it has shown he has destroyed glass windows running too fast before.

Im bummed....

I felt like Will Smith ruined this movie for me. I didnt see deadshot. I saw Will Smith.

I liked jetos joker half the time. When he wasnt trying to sound like ledger.

I felt the best moment for the joker that looked genuine was when he was firing from the chopper.

Wish this movie was better.

I agree with a lot of the film's criticism. The editing was frenetic and I actually had a hard time figuring out the point of certain shots. I thought almost all of the dialogue was vapid and throwaway. But the good parts were really good. Margot Robbie killed it with her Harley Quinn. Harley was my favorite part of the movie. And Will Smith has definitely given worse performances. Bear in mind this is coming from someone with very little comic book background (currently in the process of fixing this).

Personally, I felt pretty frustrated coming out of this movie. It was probably the most mixed and schizophrenic film I have seen in a long fucking time.

When the movie gets good, fuck, does it get good. I would be happy with Will Smith, Maggie Margot, and Viola Davis reprising their roles forever because they fucking nailed it. And it blows my mind that Jai Courtney, Jai fucking Courtney, can somehow lead a decent delivery where he's not a fucking default video game create-a-character or some shit like in most of his other roles.

But when the movie gets bad... Oh boy. Everything relating to the Enchantress was just bad (and the theater busted out in laughter when she's doing her dance while cryptically talking shit to the Squad), the editing was an absolute mess (40 minutes on Waller's dossier mode for instance), and the music selection made it seem like they were just trying way, way, way too hard to make the movie unnaturally goofy. And Leto Joker, I.. I tried to like him, GAF. I really did, but he just did not work for me at all. And do not even get me started on the Joker/Harley love depiction in this movie.

This frustrates me because there is definitely a good movie in here somewhere. But as so many other posters have said, there are just too many things that add up wrong here in my opinion. Unlike X-Men Apocalypse where the movie is just 100% unintentional cheese from start to finish, Suicide Squad just keeps constantly going from "holy shit this is awesome" to "wtf" throughout the entire goddamn run in every scene. It's pretty much just all wasted potential in the end.

I was confused too about the dancing. At first I was like "there's a special effect that's messing up right? why is she gyrating her hips like that?" and then I realized: they probably forgot something in post. My guess is they told her to do that and were planning to make it creepy (like some sort of Samara from the Ring type thing) but didnt and said "eh, she's not wearing much, lets leave it like this for the fans."

As an aside I liked her, her scenes, and her acting way more than the Joker. I mean I read the threads here and was preparing myself and I feel I was not prepared enough. The dickhead warden left more of an impression than the Joker who seemed like every scene should have been accompanied by Dashboard Confessional's Screaming Infidelities. He didnt seem menacing, he didnt seem crazy, he didnt seem anything other than a kid whose girlfriend left him.

And you are right about Jai Courtney. I mean everything he is in, he is terrible. When he first showed up I was bracing for it. He was surprisingly awesome and also leagues better than Leto. I hope they recast the Joker...

Just got back. I think it was a fun movie, more fun than BvS, but I'm not sure that comparison really says a whole lot. It definitely feels disjointed, retaining a lot of the "dark and gritty" that BvS got criticized for, but also having these weird moments of levity that just don't fit. Specifically, when the Squad discovers it's Waller they're saving in the building, and this is just after she executes the regular agents, Croc quips, "I like her." The audience laughed and so did I, but as I'm reflecting after that scene, I feel how messed up it is. It would be one thing if Croc's response got the audience to thinking that Waller is more like her prisoners than maybe we'd realized, but no, it's just a throwaway joke.

I actually really liked Leto as the Joker, but I really didn't care for the writing that was given to the Joker scenes. I feel like Joker in this film added nothing, while occasionally actually taking away. I'm curious enough to see more of Leto's take on the iconic character in later films where the character can really breathe.

Overall, I feel like Suicide Squad tried to use a similar formula to Guardians of the Galaxy (band of misfits with a distinct soundtrack), but comes out looking like a half-hearted imitation set in a much darker universe.

i thought he said " i dont like her " ?

but it was hard to make out, really

That could be. My wife and I both heard "I like her," but we both had difficulty understanding Croc at times so it's definitely possible we heard wrong.

That said, I think either phrasing still makes that scene (for me at least) a weirdly jarring contrast to what Waller just did.

Saw it yesterday. Yeah, that was a really bad movie. Not much to say that hasn't been said a hundred times already.

But I had a thought about the ending... Because the way it is, it makes no sense at all. Harley, Deadshot, Boomerang, etc, having a knife fight with an ancient goddess that was simultaneously carving aircraft carriers in half with lightning was just nonsensical. And to top it off, the whole thing is resolved with two bombs. A lot of people say there's a "good movie in here", obscured by studio meddling and poor editing, but the ending would have been presumably the same in Ayer's cut.

So I thought, what if there was studio meddling in the script stage, as well? I refuse to believe a competent filmmaker would write that ending and decide it was good.

Perhaps in the original pitch, the squad's mission was simply to bail out Waller. In that case, using them makes sense. They're expendable, and Waller retains deniability. Once Waller is out, the military carpet bombs the shit out of the surrounding area, destroying Enchantress and the squad. Hence, the 'suicide' squad. This makes a lot more sense to me. But I have a feeling if this was ever the case, some executive went, "Nah, the squad should fight the baddie in the end!", and then they had to rewrite.

They should lose the excessive lightning effects though. Way overdone.

The blue lightning bothers me. Is it blue in Suicide Squad? I know it's silly, but Flash needs that iconic yellow Lightning.

A lot of people say lightning effects.

Isn't it Lighting effects? Or do you literally mean lightning, as in bolt of...?

Edit: The flash. So, Lightning.

Him even just turning his head in that Justice League teaser sets off a dozen fucking lightning bolts all around him. They need to calm the fuck down with that shit. Barry quickly changing into his costume would probably set off an EMP.

I liked it, but I'm pretty sure the general public doesn't know what the heck is going on in that movie.

Will Shit has the best moments in the movie, but the editing and music was horrible.

Also, what is this group going to do against a new 'Superman'?

I kinda enjoyed the style but as a movie it was pretty bad.

Enchantress as the main enemy is a bit of a mess. It just didn't flow. I was waiting for the real threat to surface until half way through.

Enchantress dancing seemed really odd and definitely stood out as unnecessary
it was enjoyable though

It's yellow in BvS. Who knows if it's a matter of speed or what. I like the theory that the out of control blue lightning is an unstable connection to the speed force and his suit is patched together to contain it.

It's blue in SS and JL but yellow in BvS. I like to think that it's just a case of him not having that good of a grip on it, uncontained unfiltered raw Speedforce energy but eventually it turns yellow as he gains more experience.

This is the best part, lol. They get roflstomped by both the metahumans and only survive due to total contrivances, yet they're supposed to be able to fight Superman.

Yeah, Eastwood pulled the bomb so I'm pretty sure he did die, I saw it explode

Real stupid to not go over how it really is suicide

That was only the pitch Waller tried and her ace was Enchantress, who did end up going bad.

Also if Incubus and Enxhantress can be killed with a bomb, why didn't they just send in a drone or something

Also Incubus can withstand a fucking train slamming into him, but he's insta-killed by a regular bomb?

So why was the bomb originally set to two seconds? Seems like bad planning.

the briefcase with Enchantress' heart was also armed with proximity bomb earlier in the movie. only Waller could be close to it, and probably Flag. that's why when she teleported to Waller's hotel room, she couldn't come close to it even when Waller was asleep.

but later, i donno what happened to the proximity bomb, cuz the putties took the briefcase (and waller) from the crashed helicopter and the briefcase with Enchantress' heart in it didn't blow up.

?????

tl;dr, bombs behave funnily in suicide squad?

Welcome to this movie where a lot of things don't make sense.

This really really really
really
did not need to have a world ending threat as the main issue of the movie. Like wtf was Batman, Flash or Wonder Woman doing the entire time? Just sitting on the sidelines watching with binoculars and eating popcorn like "Lol cool"? Especially since these magical god like beings can just be killed with a bomb or in a sword fight (lol don't even get me started on that scene).

This is one of the worst edited big budgets movies I've ever seen, I didn't actually think they could make a movie worse than BvS but they did.

Also I laughed terribly when Waller just shot all the people she was held up in the room with, what a fucking awful way to make us go "Oh she's on the good side but mannnn is she bad too". Flag or Deadshot should of just shot her right then and there for that shit. Speaking of that, couldn't they have all just shot Flag and Amanda at the very end before they could touch their phones, like seriously it didn't seem that hard to actually get away.

Doesn't matter if they actually ran away, they'd all just show up randomly with no reintroduction in the next scene obviously

what was even the point of the squad's copter crashing? it served no purpose at all

The other one landed behind them and everyone exited both helicopters normally.

Outside of that rope guy, nobody really died in this movie but a lot of people were considered dead briefly.

Outside of all those crashes, Harley was pretend shot and Enchantress died but was immediately reborn.

I think maybe Scott Eastwood permanently died after he set off a bomb in his own face, but they probably just cut his resurrection scene.

I wonder if they just really wanted to let Harley make the "what a ride!" joke

I feel like everything in this would have worked better if Enchantress was with them then went rogue attempting to kill the asset they were sent to rescue. The plot line with her brother was meh and just basically added a character like Destroyer from Thor to this movie. Joker was pointless, common was wasted, slipknot was just there to die.

Waller killing all the agents protecting her was crazy. It made absolutely no sense at all. I don't have a ton of experience with comic Waller but DCAU Waller surrounded herself with people who were obviously cleared for the job. There was a point in the movie where she was taken by Enchantress and i must have zoned out because I don't even remember that happening...

Imagine if instead the mission was to rescue a high value asset from an unknown assailant. Team is sent in turns out Joker and his men got Waller and were using her as bait to get Harley out. Enchantress goes rogue in the middle of it gets her heart and then starts taking the city down. No stupid laser in the sky, no strange joker side plot, no intentionally sending people without super powers against a god.

Joker gets possibly blown up in the rogue attempt pissing Harley off, deadshot sees the steaks of what happens if enchantress wins, Diablo see someone with too much power killing women and children, flagg wants to be bland with another bland character so he goes after enchantress.

Come up with whatever reason you want but the movie just did not seem like a mission you would send Task Force X on.

I watched this again yesterday and it's still bad.

The Squad was activated immediately after Incubus showed up and destroyed that subway. The military people wanted the guy who aims good, a psycho girl with a baseball bat, a human crocodile, a guy who throws boomerangs, and fire dude to take this metahuman out. This wasn't supposed to be some black ops thing: they were meant to kill other metahumans. Now, when they actually get assembled, Waller tells them that they are meant to rescue HVT-1 and that's it. Side note: Waller says that she's the only person that matters in that city in front of her subordinates.

So, on one hand, we see that the military people want to use the Squad to kill metahumans, but then almost immediately after that, Waller says another thing. The audience is given two different objectives from two different groups and it's never really acknowledged. It's confusing.

When Flag rescues Waller in the office building and right before she murders her team, she tells Flag that he wouldn't have made it that far without their help, but the movie shows it differently. Up until then, the Squad isn't doing anything that the military couldn't. Harley is killing those putties with her baseball bat. Boomerang is kicking them and slicing them with his boomerangs. Waller even says that those putties can take a headshot and keep going, but we see those putties get headshot and die. Flag does it to one and that's the basis of Deadshot's big action moment. The first time a helicopter got shot down, we don't see who did it, but I think it's safe to assume that the putties did it. The putties are shown to be using guns. What's stupid is that not all of them do so we can still get some melee action. Speaking of the action, it's bland and forgettable.

Now that I've seen the Joker again, I definitely don't like him. He's still superfluous to the movie and Leto's performance seems like he's took Ledger's performance and turned it up a notch. I still think that the Suicide Squad is pretty much unnecessary given the threat. The main villains are defeated with bombs. They needed a covert, black-ops type of thing for this group, not a powerful witch.

I did miss some things on my first go, namely the reason why the putties were taking Flag. It's because the Enchantress was afraid of him. Why they don't kill him instead of trying to kidnap him, I don't know. Again, what the people say and what we see is vastly different. I like Diablo a lot more. I didn't pick up that the house he walked out of in his introduction is the house he burned his family in. Still, him calling the Squad his family is too much of a stretch. It was not earned at all. Katana is still useless and her last minute backstory was hilarious. Boomerang coming back (because he's a boomerang) was completely unmotivated and unacknowledged.

When the Enchantress shows the Squad what they really want, Deadshot really wants to kill Batman. That doesn't really fit his arc. He wants to be with his daughter and wants her to know that he's not a piece of shit. That's the whole reason why he wants to continue through with the mission, but what he really wants is to kill Batman? Come on.
