Sports game of the year?

I dunno, I get a nice sim experience out of it--instead of tap tap tap tap fast break repeat, the game forces you into its more realistic tempo and makes you feel out both the rhythm of the game and how to play it.

:lol I take it you havent played anyone online?

My fav Sport is hockey and the past few years ESPN hockey was the best sports game on the planet for me. After Playing Winning Eleven I realized that I was so so wrong. I never enjoyed a sports game as much as i enjoy the winning eleven series.

I think its pretty safe to assume anyone who isnt giving winning eleven the nod has not played it.

ESPN NHL 2K5 - bugs and all (thanks Sega, I loooooove having my seasons lock up on me randomly, wtf assholes), this is the best, most realistic representation of hockey ever seen on console or PC. The degree of control is unmatched, and when you're matched up with a good opponent online....the ebb and flow replicates the professional game better than any other title. No reason to darken your door with EA's turd burglar of an NHL game - ESPN is king of the hill.

Fight Night - WasabiKing and I were playing online, locked in a battle of wills. Both of us were using the analog sticks (as all right thinking people do) and he was hammering me from pillar to post through the first few rounds. Just as he unleashed a right to my jaw that put me down for 7, my 2 year old son - who had been sneaking up behind me on the back of the couch - dropkicked me in the back of the head. For one second, I thought EA had done the impossible and upped force-feedback by 1000x. One of my personal best sports gaming moments of 2004.

Bought Winning Eleven 7, thanks to the recommendations of this forum. Played it for about 3 months, then traded it in. The amount of button combinations necessary to play this game at a high level leaves me shaking my head and considering shuttle piloting as a more realistic alternative - not fun at all. The prospect of playing the next version online doesn't appeal much either.

Madden was sports game of the year for me. Any game that has me STILL playing this many months after release has to be GOTY. I recently got back into playing Franchise Mode and I was reminded what a great job EA did with the game.

NCAA was really bad as they tried to create better defense in the game by killing the offense. Drops of passes, slowdown, and sluggish control really hurt the game as well. I saw they had some really innovative ideas for the game, but the execution really was bad. With that said, if they just fix the problems of this year's game, next year's edition should be outstanding.

Fight Night was a really good game as well, seems that with the additions that have been talked about next year's should be even better and allow for better balance.

Basketball games all were so severely flawed this year, it isn't even funny. College Hoops seems ok, but Sega's 'style', of the long animations really kills the responsiveness of the control, IMO. I have no idea why it is so hard to make a good basketball game.

Uhh... wha? Button combinations? You mean like:

X = pass
L1 + X = pass + delivering player makes a run

or

triangle = through pass
L1 + triangle = high through pass

..right? Yeah, I really don't see the problem. Not to mention that you can surely play at a high level without using so much allowed. But you'd have to be very good.

It's got a steep learning curve. A shame you didn't stick with it, I think.

Bish I hate this game online due to button mashers, I'll play against you anyday.
We'll have to set a date.
But I warn you. I'm an unstoppable force in that game.

Beh, to me it's not really an American, European, etc. thing at all. My favorite sports to watch are American sports (though I do watch and greatly enjoy a decent amount of international sports), but far and away my favorite sports game is:

You can do basically everything you need and a huge variety of moves without anything complicated in terms of button combos (though I'm personally fond of the more complicated moves since I've put in hundreds of hours into the game), and that's a small part of what makes the game so great.

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 for sure. The new little things in the game that weren't in the previous games are good enough to keep me playing till PES 5. And the great modding community for the PC version is a great way to keep the game up to date..

You just have to stick with it. After the relatively steep learning curve you would really appreciate the amount of depth this game has. And you really don't need to use the more fancier moves that require more button combinations, you can stick to the basics and still have a lot of fun and success with it. It's all in the pacing and strategies in your attack and defence. Have patience and discipline.

WE8I will be out in a few months, if you don't mind waiting a bit longer. It's also a much better game, though I'm pretty sure I say that with every version.

With WE8 coming out in two months, I am still playing WE7 more than anything. During my 3 weeks at home on vacation here, my brother and I have had WE marathons every evening. As a matter of fact, we just concluded one and he's playing it alone as I type this.

Easily Madden & MVP.

Fight Night was good as well, but most people didn't use the sticks so that was lame...

The ESPN games are good doorstops, thats about it.I understand why most people here like them though, they're arcade games through and through and you can get away with stupid shit that you can't in Madden.

Oh and NCAA sucked balls, curse you EA. :(

edit-Forgot to mention that all basketball games were major dissapointments.

Did ESPN/VC/Sega piss in your corn flakes or something?

Winner is Fight Night, followed by ESPN Baseball (no broken franchise mode, unlike MVP). Madden gets blackballed right off my list because 1) it does little to improve annually and 2) EA sucks dick. Fight Night's originality carries it above EA's dickheadedness, but just barely.

Fight Night (PS2), followed very closely by Madden NFL 2005 (Xbox) and ESPN NHL 2K5 (Xbox). Nuff said.

P.S. jarrod, you're a fucking riot. :lol

Innovator of the year: Fight Night. Boxing is fun again!
Runner up: MVP Baseball. The control just feels RIGHT.

The game that accomplished so much that it forced a giant change to the sports game industry: NFL2K5

Disappointments list: NCAA Football 2k5 (obviously), NFL2k5 (unpolished to a fault), Madden 2k5, ESPN Baseball 2k4
