And you know this to be the case, how?

It was never going to happen. And it wasn't because it was only on PS5, and it wasn't becayse it wasn't turn based or whatever.

Because that's how business works in this field.

(cheeky edit fair play tho)
Not really cheeky, just looked at the totality of it. ;)

In fact, so far a lot of people (and one sore Bloomberg reporter with dreadful track record) are trying too hard to frame FF16 as a flop. God knows why.

Because if it would've released on all major platforms, it would've most likely made triple the income for them.

Those mobile users didn't vanish from one day to the next, so they knew revenue and income was dropping like crazy and with the flop that forspoken was, the situation only got more dire, and yet they chose to release the only game that had hopes of generating a huge amount of income for the company on one console only.

IMHO FF16 isn't a failure as a game, even when some try to frame it as that, it's more a failure to capitalize on the huge hype and demand there was for it after the drought and bitter taste left by FF15.

So why assume it would have been released in the same condition if they needed to make it on Xbox and PC?

Forspoken is the reason for this for sure.
They marketed it as bad as possible since the game itself is great.... especially now. read my update in OT thread. It changed a bit since release.

Sooooooooooooi will they stop all their mobile sh*ts that barely stay on sale a few months before they stop selling them? Or do they still like that and not get it? All those mobile games are not going to make them rich and gamers hate them!

FFXVI is the fastest selling PS5 exclusive on the platform to date by a wide margin, which would seem to validate Square's attribution of sales underperformance to the PS5 install base being smaller than expected. It's probably safe to assume that the decision to make the game PS5 exclusive was made before the console launched, and likely even before COVID hit....they couldn't have known then how bad the supply shortages would be.

In any case, I don't think there's any real cause for concern for Square's financial future....2024 is shaping up to be a big year with FFXIV Dawntrail and FFVII Rebirth on deck.

I think they'll be getting a fair chunk of money from Mario RPG this holiday season too.

What condition are you talking about exactly?

Quality of the game. The devs have stated that Playstation devs have helped them code the game during development. That wouldn't have happened without this Sony x Square deal.

Proof that console exclusivity for AAA is not sustainable.

Why because the game is already in a profitable stage after 6 weeks?

Profitable doesn’t mean acceptable nor optimal for a publicly traded company. Net income dropping -70% or more is going to get shareholders breaking their balls to go multiplat or get cute with micro transactions in single player games. If the game is front-loaded with sales and you only make a 20% margin (guessing), that makes it hard to justify the same strategy since it doesn’t take much to miss by 20%.

Well.....it is coming out on PC too. More than likely next year. Plus you can't ignore the money they received from Sony upfront.
