Square Enix's silence about the PC version of Nier Automata

Saito Producer just mentioned steam version on the Dengeki stream.

He said they are working on it, but they have to do something about the pirating issue, and because of recent certain game being broken (I assume he is mentioning RE7 issue but I am not 100% sure) they have to do something about it. He said it won't take long so please wait for it.

Lol
I don't know what to say honestly.

Delaying the PC version and doing no marketing for it will probably hurt their sales more than piracy would
And what they will come up with to try to prevent that piracy might also prevent some people from bying the game too ( like denuvo already does ). I already fear that it might kill modding before it is even born.

Re7 getting cracked didn't prevent or delay other games release, from indies to jrpg ( Atelier ), it's so hard to understand why a minority doesn't see it.

I'm ready for the One Day Edition.

A delay to put in some kind of alternate Denuvo...

Yeah, that's completely out of touch. I can really see them screwing this up really badly.

This could just as well be marketing speak for "PC version is still fucked because we have no idea what we're doing and we need more time".

So fucking silly. They are going to lose more sales because if this than they would by releasing it day and date without Denuvo. Such a terrible decision.

One day devs will realize that the vast majority of people that pirate wouldn't buy your game in the first place.

Welp, I can only hope that whenever this game arrives the port turns out to be solid.

What's that? I Should Wait For A Sale Edition? Ok then.

If Denuvo never existed in the first place, they wouldn't have that dilemma, they would just release it naked to the wild like 99% of succesfull games in the last 6 years.

DRM fucking legit customers even after being broken.

You have to be fucking kidding me...

Poor Saito senpai..............

I want to message him about this issue (just don't care about piracy, you old bastard!), but I'm on verge of being blocked :)

Pirates hurt their business, which in turn hurts actual paying customers.

"hurting" is really relative here.

It hurts customers in the sense that pubs like putting in copy proteciton that causes problems/limits funcitonality.

I think that especially for a more niche game like Nier, releasing day and date will do more for sales than Denuvo or whatever they are looking at to implement. Especially if the delay ends up being months rather than a few weeks. If people have to wait anyway, they'll wait for sales.

Lol so backwards.

I pre-ordered the PS4 version yesterday. You win again, Square Enix ... I am too weak to win in this horrible system rigged against the fans ... :(

I feel almost sorry for any games that are being published by SE. They have ruined so many, most recently DX:MD, with their stupid practices. FFS.

Receipts?

Seems like piracy is still an issue pubs are concerned about. Guess this puts to rest all those ridiculous theories that Sony delayed the PC version lol

i am pretty sure that at least soime of the devs already do realize that , but the pubs doesnt care , they would rather be tilting at windmills and pay millions for locks than doing something for the actuall customers

Their statement makes me believe if Denuvo didn't exist, the game would've been a PS4 exclusive from start.

This thread made me thinking. In my head I assumed it would release on the same date.
They never announced a date for pc release right?

So no receipts then.

I'm too lazy to look for them, but there's threads on gaf that compile sales data of japanese games on steam. Those that did release simultaneously with the console versions all sold significantly better than late ports.

To the surprise of no one.

The same is true of every late port on consoles too. To name a prominent recent example: Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4 didn't exactly set the world on fire.

I don't think one needs receips to point out that late ports don't sell as well as the original release.

PS4 Pro seems to do 60 fps well enough so I will day one that. I usually double dip for PC versions but square has a very bizarre relationship with PC ports so I don't think supporting it will affect the positive changes I usually look for when double dipping on certain platforms.

Smh.
Keep banging that drum.

No surprise there, launch hype and momentum is a real thing for games.

We should ask 99% of the PC game dev for those receipts, since that probably close to the % of them who don't release their game with a DRM like Denuvo.

I'm sure it's because they don't like money, seems like the logical answer. "hey we could make more money with a delayed release + DRM, let's not do that, I don't like money" is what happen in all those studio.

No it's not, SE has a ridiculous amount of jrpgs on steam without DRMs, it's actually more believable that they are lying given the yesterday statement of "we don't want to split work on two platforms" after being asked for a third one.

Even if DRM isn't the reason for the delay i still think it's unlikely that Sony paid money here. Especially if the delay is indeed "short".

It's not exactly unheard of that publishers start working on the PC version late/purposefully delay a PC release a few weeks. Ubisoft used to do this routinley, but there's other instances too.

Also explain why they have to suddenly cut steam logo from all trailers "coincidentally" after Sony first acknowledges the game. You pretend your second platform doesn't exist because that surely will help against piracy. Right.

I haven't seen a single game that suddenly got cut off their steam logo from their trailer.

Yeah, it's wierd. Who knows what the thought behind it is. And maybe money did flow. But i can't remember another game where that happened, even games that got moneyhats from Sony.

rofl. I was already gonna pay $30 for it since it was gonna be infested with Denuvo like any SE game, but now imma knock another $10 off for this stupidity.

Says the guy who never bother bringing any receipts.
But yeah, common sense.
Otherwise you'd see games with Denuvo performing better than those without.
In the weird arithmetic of a "pirated sale" eating up the profits from any actual sale, it does perform better. I mean, purely in their heads.
This is something that most western devs that put out PC games have learned long ago: There will always be piracy, just offer a good service and you will still see legitimate customers. Look at CD Projekt, where fans themselves urged pirates to buy, though that might be an extreme case.
Japan has to learn that in their own time, I guess. I just assume a lot of them will just give up, and only return when they see how smarter companies are doing it right.

Damn. If that's the case I may just grab this on PS4. Not a problem, but definitely a bit of a bummer.

I don't buy the piracy excuse, especially since RE7 still had excellent sales despite getting broken. More likely it's "Steam version? Oh fuck, that's right... uh... we have no idea how to do that."

Japanese devs are terrified of the PC, they have no idea how to approach it. It took petitions, sales estimations and years of waiting for publishers like Capcom, From Software and Square Enix to feel comfortable dipping their toes into the market.

Considering 90% of this game's hype is in Japan, 99% of Western gamers have no idea what "Nier" is, and the PC is pretty irrelevant in their home market... I think their focus is on domestic sales first. We'll be lucky to see a PC release before 2018.

I'm warming up to playing big RPGs on my PS4 though. Nioh taught me that, while still not ideal, the platform is at least convenient.

I'm not keen on most solutions for piracy since they will often simply negatively effect me - the paying customer. They already missed their chance to get me purchasing near to launch as I have now already bought other things that will have my time. Add superfluous drm just means I'll wait even longer till the price is a disposable one just as the game may become.
