Square's Future

Did a search, couldn't find anything.

Gamespot has a piece on Square's latest shareholder meeting.

Nothing terribly interesting to me other than these two bits:

To realize certain financial goals, the company said it was targeting sales of three to four million copies of Final Fantasy XII for the PS2 (due next year).

I've read a lot of speculation that FFXII would be released in 2005

When pointed out that Square Enix could be bought out by any investor who could raise 200 billion yen ($1.83 billion), the company commented that while this might be so, its biggest and most valuable capital resources are its talent, and that talent cannot be bought. Officials said the company could remain profitable on net revenues of 30-40 billion yen ($276-368 million).

That bit about the talent is kind of funny, considering how much talent Squaresoft has managed to run off over the years (like the Monolith team). :lol Apart from Kingdom Hearts, I really haven't seen anything noticeably great from Square in a very long time. What's ironic is that they ruined themselves (financially) in good part due to the first Final Fantasy movie, yet they're now in the process of making Advent Children and the majority of their focus these days almost entirely revolves around Final Fantasy in general. I wish Square would go back to the way it used to be...

Well, I think SE needs to breakout from the fantasy genre and make RPGs in the modern world. Something like Parasite Eve 2006 would be awesome. We need JRPG in the battle/modern genre. No magic.. that would be fun.

Imagine. :'(

Didn't Parasite Eve still have magic despite the modern setting? Modern style RPG are rare though from any company. I like them but they hardly ever happen.

There's a Persona coming so that works.

It wasn't quite magic in PE. Some mitrochroia energy thing.

I hope the rumours of that SHADOWRUN rpg for X360 is true. I want something like that... ... I'll even buy a X360 for the handful of exclusives.

Back to Square...

last game I played from them was FFX-2, preceeded by KH + FFX. They really really lost my mindshare this gen. I didn't even touch mana because of the awful review or the GBA re-releases.

The talent part is right, the can't be bought part.....

:)

Square desperatelly needs more games like Kingdom Hearts. They just need MORE rpgs' that aren't Final Fantasy. FF used to be something so huge and highly anticipated, you never new when and if it was ever going to come out. Now you can pretty much expect one every 2 years. And even expect the type of game it will be. They really need to get away from the 17teen I'm so cool-look and I'll get back into it. Because honestly they had cooler characters back when they were NOT trying to be so cool.

Xenogears was is still the best thing they've done since FF7. They need more stuff like that.

that.

FF 4-7 has the most amazing cast ever and most of them were adults.

I'm sick of tired of the home-erotic male leads as well.

Yeah right, and money can't buy happiness. F'ing retards.

I'll select-cancel you to death (so what if they took it out!).

No clue..didn't FF7 or 8 sell the most worldwide? And 8 more than 7 in Japan?

The biggest asset for Square is the Final Fantasy name.

And tagging that POS expensive movie with the FF name was a decent move from a business stand point... considering that it was originally not gonna be FF related (and it shows) but cost them a massive bomb, just in terms of investment.

Too ahead of their time really... but not... ah fuck it, that movie was just shit, and they paid the price for letting it out. They also lost Hironobu Sakaguchi, even if in the latter days he didn't do jack shit, it's sorta come back to bite them in the ass with him heading a new company and all... of course he was the cause of the movie and much of their financial woe... so...

Seriously though, people can easily and have easily done FF style RPGs, and Square simply can't stop them; considering that their battle systems change from game to game, and so do settings... and honestly, as much fan favourites as chocobos, moogles, Cid and intresting naming conventions for spells are, they don't really sell Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy X sold 2,246,689 in the US as of Feb 05. It sold around 2.5 million copies in Japan I believe.

Final Fantasy X-2 sold 1,328,613 in the US as of Feb 05. It sold around 2million copies in Japan.

Dont' know about Europe...

Not that I am a RPG freak...but my brother certainly is. And he has kept his ass away from Square games since Xenogears (although he beat FFX).

Square should refresh all their IPs...do something innovative a la Atlus...

Only reason i could think of for the low expectations for FFXII would be because it's for the PS2 and not a next-gen console. Even then i still see it selling 5 million+ worldwide easy.

Yes please.

Square needs to get their shit together. Drop this whole trying hard to get FFXI to work and concentrate on what the public really wants from them, a good freaking RPG. Their release schedule sucks, they need to stagger them better. We've been waiting a long time for Kingdom Hearts 2 and FFXII and it looks like we will get them about the same time. We should have had KH2 a good year ago. They need to create or put to use some of their smaller groups and ressurect older properties too like Einhander, FF tactics and Vagrant Story.

I have never gotten around to playing Vagrant Story and I should, I keep hearing it's good. Xenogears was awesome. Yes it was long and the story was as big as reading Lord of the Rings but damn I got my moneys worth out of it. And it was leaps and bounds better then the crap xenosaga stuff. Parasite Eve, wasn't so good. Neat idea and at least it gave George Lucas his Midichlorans idea for Episode 1.

Lol. So you want SE to release games based on schedule like most western developers instead of releasing them when they think it's done. way to go.

As much as I hate to say it, I think if square doesn't change they're going to irrelevant in a few years. Fact is they haven't been able to put out an important US game in years, and same could be argued in Japan. They are clinging desparately to this FFVII franchise, and while I love FFVII as much as the next fan boy, but this is getting to be a bit much. It's funny last night I was looking at my stack of square games from the PS. I have FFVII-IX and Tactics, Xenogears and Chrono Cross. Compare that to the PS2 stack of FFX, KH and FFX-2 (sigh) and you wonder how both stacks came from the same company. Square needs to do something new and get its act together on the old tricks it has (FFXII=Duke Nukem Forever jr.).

Oh and the loss of monolith and brownie brown I'd mourn if they put out anything of value.
