Star Citizen fans sigh deeply, rub their foreheads as developer casts doubt on Squadron 42's 2026 release: 'I don't know if we're going to make it'

Huckaby said developers are "on track" and that "there's no mystery [or] anything we're hiding," but you can probably guess where the attention was immediately focused. And fair enough: "I don't know if we're going to make it" is generally not the sort of thing you say when you're confident you're going to make it. In fact, I can't speak for anyone else but for me it is exactly the sort of thing I say when I'm pretty damn sure I'm not going to make it and I want everyone in earshot to know that I tried real hard and I made no promises.

"If they were really planning to release it in 2026 we would now start to see marketing ramp up," one redditor wrote. "Not even talking about it at CitzenCon is the complete opposite."

"S42 will be delayed to 2027. I am almost certain of it now," another added.

"My son is 5 months old, and I expect to see him walking and talking before I play this game," a third chipped in. "I will probably be able to teach him basic M&K controls before this game comes out. I'm not happy that's the case, but that's realistic."

Just yesterday I made a note to bookmark the 2026 thread to come back to on December 31 2026 when they inevitably miss that deadline too lol

That's a shame, I like burgers :(

Yes we should trust the company that has scammed people out of hundreds of millions of dollars.
EXACTLY! Hundreds of thousands of people think they have fun with this project, tens of thousand concurrent players daily, but they're not. They are just trapped in an intricate conspiracy to extract their money. In reality they hate the game, and themselves. They just don't know it because they've been secretly programmed.

Edit: Wait, I paid 35 dollars for this scam :( What will people think of me if they find out?? I'm a failure, my life is ruined! Oh why oh why didn't I spend those 35 dollas on half of Skull and Bones instead??

They couldnt even make the shity demo they had work last scamcon! Ofcourse there wont be a squadshit 24 this year or any year for that matter.

When was the last time you saw a full fledged before release on-stage demo for 1h15? Since early 2000's at E3 I'll tell ya that, and no fucking wonder they stopped doing this shit with takes like that.

Let's not even talk about massively praised studios and what gets released to public

Don't worry it still prints money for Chris's yachts.

Ah yes, the 2015 meme that so rapidly spread around the internet that morons still believes that shit a decade later, he rent a sailboat for a trip. The fucking audacity. How could he!

EXACTLY!!! I can't believe how stupid people are for not caring about this monumental personal fiasco they have embarked on! I think they need to be sent to a mental asylum at minimum. Preferrably sedated, lobotomized, laughed at, pissed on, and then shot in the back of the head (or front, it doesn't really matter)!

So who wants to bet this won't launch before next gen? My god, zero accountability, and yt the donors will keep lapping it up. This is their modus operandi, kp scop crping steadily while selling the ever-growing Valhalla pitch about the promised land to their stans and keep the cashflow going indefinitely. At some point, you have to call shit out.

Exactly!!! I heard they got it working and played for an hour, on stage, but it all lies! LIES, I TELL YOU!

If only they took inspirations from the greatest studios for pre-release material

Or they could make highly curated marketing approved reels like 99.9% of no balls developers and then peoples gobble it up like its gonna be perfection until release date when....

this game look awesome back in PS3 gen, but as we appoard PS6 gen, the look not really impress anymore, keep it up until PS7 maybe some mobile game can look like that too

Did anyone actually think this game would be released in 2026?

The guy is not saying that it'll be delayed. Again, read.

Hi, Jared here. Here's what I also said:

  • I said we drew a line in the sand and now we have to do everything we can to make it.
  • I said we're on track and that there's no mystery here, nothing to hide here.
  • I said that we just want to leave everyone heads down to focus on meeting that statement we gave last year.
  • I said that when we get closer to the release, you'll see and hear lots more about Squadron.
...and I said that *I* personally cannot tell you what the future holds, because quite honestly, that's the responsible answer for me to give with the way that video games are made. Not our video games, ALL video games.

So no, *I* don't KNOW the future, and I said as much is all, and I'd ask please don't mistake my pragmatism for any commentary on the status of the game. I just try very, very hard to speak as deliberately and plainly as I can without embellishment or hyperbole.

I meant what I said in the most literal manner possible: that I can't sit here and tell you what the future holds, because in the entire history of video game development, who's ever been able to?

That's all. If I didn't believe in this team and the people within, I wouldn't still be here.

The reason they don't even bother with showing SQ42 next month is that it would take away time and focus from delivering on that promise 100% for 2026. They don't want that.

I remember when they were saying that the game would be released in 2016, "for sure"

The time before crytek found the seamless planet tech and they decided not to leave Squadron 42 behind while the MMO would get it? Sure I remember. The time where planets were just textures, atmosphere reentry was on-rail sequence with a whiteout effect to hide loading screen and scene change, landing was on-rail, you could only land to tailored specific spots on a planet. Yea I member. Who that fuck cares about that version?

Everyone would have been pissed if they had released that version and a few years later the MMO had implemented the tech.

Speak for yourself there.

I would have rather had a fun, fully-playable game in 2016 than wait 10+ more years for them to implement features that are essentially window dressing.

And let's be honest, the MMO wouldn't have had the tech in a "few years" because at this point the MMO will likely never fully release.

that was 35 2015 dollars. That's like 200 in todays bucks.

as someone play long time FF14 and keep piss off when dev update more system into an MMO, i can't get why SC devs think feature creep is the best appoard and more crazy when theur fanbase cheer for it

I'm gonna gloat in my O onQ123 moment.

Alright Adams

Bet time?

If it doesn't release in 2026, I get a 6 months ban

If it release in 2026, you get a 6 months ban

Safe as shit right? In fact some peoples seem so sure about this, I bet some peoples wouldn't mind to escalate their side to permanent ban to get a chance to see me out for 6 months. Safest bet ever, easy peasy, buggy loop is gone for 6 months with no risks. Right?

That's not the SC fanbase I know of, I bet nemiroff nemiroff would say the same

Spectrum and r/starcitizen are very harsh, harsher than any community I have personally followed for a game. Peoples cheering for feature creep? 13 years ago maybe? There's entire channels dedicated to criticizing the devs' every breaths.

How much has been spent on this game now?

On Squadron 42 specifically or remaking an engine from the ground up, making the MMO and supporting networks for tens of thousands of daily players with the debugging, patching, development of technologies specific to MMOs including the marketing needed to bring in new players and the content added to it to keep player's interest?

Who could separate all this back to Squadron 42?

They're making millions not releasing the game. Can't blame them.

But you can't buy Squadron 42 since years :pie_thinking: How are they making millions out of Squadron 42 when you cannot buy it

You know I like you Buggy, but at this point, the game needs to do the talking for them. People are 100% justified to be mistrustful of CIG.

Sure. That's a totally fair take. But if I see weak arguments or shortcuts, such as not reading the guy's clarifications, for a quick dogpiling on it, then I guess I am also allowed to talk about it?

It would be much easier to just shit on it, trust me. That's easy.

Not the game.

They're funding the livelihoods of the developers to develop this vision... as slowly as possible with as much feature creep as possible.

I don't blame the devs, they'll be able to see their toddlers through to college and still be making the game.

No please I don't like ban bets lol, I don't want myself or you to get any bans over a games release date.

Congratulations, you have arrived at one of the core problems with this project - and Star Citizen in general. Scope creep. If at CitizenCon this year they announce some groundbreaking new tech and feature that they've implemented in the MMO, would you be okay with them delaying Squadron 42 two more years to implement those new groundbreaking features and tech?
