Star Ocean 4 JP site open. Release Feb 19=Japan, Feb 24=NA, April 24=PAL

I think it's lame because the battles are now made of 4 characters, so having only 7 is... disappointing. In SO games you are giving the choice of picking which characters you want to stick with for the whole game, and drop the ones you don't care about.

Though, they did mention in a interview before that the cast will be about the same size as SO3. I'm sure the site is incomplete though, there isn't a section for trailers for instance. So maybe they'll add more slots later.

Ground textures in the scene where the villagers are bowing are pretty ugly. Looks great otherwise though, so we'll give them a pass.

So what's the story with the Star Ocean series? Is this just a fantasy JRPG set in space or is it a sci-fi JRPG with an original spin?

Augh! Goddamn real dolls! Get out of my Star Ocean!

I swear, I wanna reach through the screen and just kill the main characters. Why must the character models be so bad and everything else so good?

Alien reality shows or some shit?

Looks good, though...I will approach it cautiously and pray the world may one day see a game as beautiful as SO2.

It has the annoying habit to posing as a sci fi RPG but instead of following up that promise, it drops everyone into medieval magic ville for most of the game.

Combat is sooo satisfying though

Battle system works well, looks pretty easy but it was just regular monsters. I wish there was more characters to spice things up a bit, or at least make them more interesting. They need to blink! Graphics are amazing, time to eat crow.

Did anyone notice how Rush works like Overlimits in Tales? It seems Rush is a lot easier to activate, therefore looks like it triggers automatically.

gamespot hands on with the game

The battle will end rather quickly but not without a lot of sweeping, elaborate swordplay and special attacks. The visuals look amazing and the character designs are attractive and detailed. Each fight ends with a bit of a slow down to bump up the wow factor and allow the character to show off their killing blow.

From our brief playtime, we're already hooked and want to play more. Fans of Star Ocean will enjoy the updated graphics because the battles are fun to watch and a blast to play because it's easy and approachable for anyone. If you've never had an opportunity to play a Star Ocean game, here's your chance to get into the series.

not that informative, just some gushing at the graphics. One interesting bit is how she mentioned Killer Moves are now mapped to different buttons, kind of SO2. In SO3 they were mapped to the same buttons used for normal attacks, this basically confirms NO strong/weak attacks, NO anti-attack aura system, moves consume MP now so NO MP death (which was obvious, since enemy's info in battles lack an MP meter).

Full trailer with english VA. NEED HD DIRECT FEED OF THIS STAT.
It'll probably be on Marketplace soon enough.

From that link... at least they seem to sound better than IU's VAs.

The more I watch the more that little vioce in my head screams, "These kids are too fucking young to be on the first warp drive flight. This is total horseshit!"

Then I remember, this is Japan

Trailer looks good, except for the fact that it seems our characters crash land at least once on a backwater planet where people appear to be bowing down to them. I just hope you don't get stuck there for the majority...

Also, some of the character models look kind of creepy. I like the art, but I dunno...they're too shiny or something.

nice.

the writing in that preview is hilarious though

Cutscenes look really odd (faces don't seem to help this), but I'll be damned if the gameplay doesn't look awesome.

Totally getting this.

I understand it does not sound next gen, but I'd rather have random battles and not visible enemies.
Seeing the same enemies popping over and over at the same places when you grind is so boring.
More characters available than the slot you have=über replay ability and customs teams (ashton for3v35).

So3 was meh for me cause the craft system was so less funny than in so2, ebil plot twist at the middle of the game, boring bonus dungeon.
But especially battle bonus, so good to have but too easy to loose unless you controlled a character in the far back but that killed the fun to play.
Maybe a bad judgment of mine but too much difference between top tier and low tier character.

We'll just have to accept most faces of JRPGs are gonna suck.

We also know Tri-Ace will deliver on gameplay.

Story, crafting, and pacing are really the only variables here, but hey I enjoyed IU and I can't imagine this game not blowing IU out of the water in those respects.

I don't think there a clear tier when it comes to characters in SO3, sure Maria was godly but characters like Peppita were useful and were fun to control thanks to the varied skillset for each character in SO3. I think it really depends on your playing style.

SO2 had a lot of crappy characters, though. Noel was such a piece of SHIT and it didn't help his VA was ear bleeding bad. Mages in SO2 were trash, too, because they interrupt the action for spell casting.

WHERES MY PAL RELEASE?
I guess i really need to buy an ntsc console...

Yeah seems kinda weird that there's no Euro release mentioned, especially since the PSP remakes of 1 and 2 are going to come out here and 3 already came out on PS2 a while ago.

There's a press release on gamespress.com dated today saying it's coming to Europe in 2009.

gameplay itself looked pretty hectic, but I'm not really chuffed with the fact that the arena you fight in looks so different from the real world encounter site...on the other hand, the transition from snow level to meadows is nice

Is this coming out for the PS3? On the 1up page it said it did but as far as I can tell it's 360 only so...?

Slowdown at the end of battle? :(

I was really hoping Tri-Ace would continue from SO3 with 60fps this time again.

Do we know if the game is 30fps or 60fps?

Dengeki impressions.

-A to Attack, LB/RB for Special Move, Y is Menu, B+Analog is Jump
-While attacking the Rush gauge fills, and when it's full you press X to go into Rush Mode
-The enemy can use Rush Mode too
-If you are ambushed by the enemy in the overworld, your Rush gauge will dramatically drop at the onset of battle
-Item Creation is in, Item and Enemy Collection and Battle Collection as well
-Quests
-Skill and BEAT customization for the characters

No MP death? No more holding buttons down to use moves? Item Creation back? Improved skills system? Sounds absolutely insane, looks like the followup to SO2 that 3 should have been. I just hope the AI is decent this time around... Happy to see there's very little wait between the Japanese and US release. I'm already calling this GOTY 2009 (aside from Kororinpa Marble Mania 2, of course).

Awesome. Although I suspect they probably mean "towards the end of 2009"...

SE has been giving Europe games at the same time as or earlier than North America for some time now.
