Dont know if this has been mentioned already, but whats the deal with the cutscenes? I watched some videos on gametrailers and the framerate is god awful.

Square Enix released some stuff on the site that's, like, 15 FPS and not representative of the game at all. Really dumb on SE's part. If you watch some of the latest videos, like Gamespot's preview, you'll see that it's actually pretty smooth. And Yamagishi confirmed in a recent interview that the game is 60 FPS.

Just to be clear that is 60fps in battle and cutscenes?

Well, he didn't specify... but the cutscenes in the preview video look just as smooth as everything else, so at least the cutscenes are stable. Hopefully, it's 60 FPS everywhere.

Oh, it looks like someone edited out that controversy part. Here's what it used to say:

It has been reported that Square Enix is erasing the anime style in the English localized version: Characters' portraits have changed to CG, internal menus are darker and supposedly a little confusing. The greatest difference, however, is the abscence of emotional portraits during dialogs thus making the characters' feelings more difficult to understand.[25] This movement has made many people cancel their pre-orders. Thera are rumors that some other content is also being removed.[26]

And thanks, John, for confirming it again. :)

Haha, yeah I'm sure lots of pre-orders were canceled over that (rolleyes). The US version looks 100 times better than the Japanese version. And the best part is, this was a decision made by tri-Ace, not SQEX USA, which kills all the conspiracy theories about how Americans "ruined" the art. They had nothing to do with it. :)

Perhaps not a lot, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few.

All for the greater mass audience approval though, I suppose.

Though, I doubt the people they are trying to attract with this change would care one way or the other. If they are not interested in the premise/genre, a darker menu interface and CG portraits are not going to sway them.

I still think it was a poor decision. While I like the new menu interface, I just can't warm up to the CG portraits. Some of the characters (especially Edge) only looked good to me in their 2D art as their CG models left me quite detached. Style changes are not really something that should be done lightly in established franchises.

And all this would be a non-issue if the developers gave the player a choice of portrait/menu styles. If you want to experiment with style changes, don't make them region exclusive. I sure there are people who feel the exact opposite of me and enjoy the CG look, but what if they happen to live in Japan? All regions should have access to the same game experience. And I think fans would appreciate the opportunity to use the style that suits them instead of being categorized by the developers based on where they happen to live.

I'm gonna pass on the official thread. If someone else was interested in doing one, feel free to do so.

The light of tri-Ace fades as one of the last remaining guadians of the dying hope of a 60fps future steps into the darkness.
I bet Error cancelled his preorder too!

If people use an IGN review thread (let's face it, they probably have an exclusive on it and will have it out first) like they did with SO1 and SO2, it's your fault!

cheap and nasty translation of the famitsu review:

reviewer 1 : 9/10, overall it's very well put together with no major faults. battles are deep especially when you factor in side outs and real time character changing. even without installing the game everything loads at a nice pace. whether you find the characters interesting or the game play compelling is something you'll need to discover for yourself but this is certainly a very well made game.

reviewer 2 : 9/10, the combat is similar to what the previous games in the series offered. you are guaranteed to have fun playing it. the battles are very active with heaps of different moves all used at a fast pace. (hard to make out) boss battles aren't too easy(?) which is great! from creating items to collecting data on monsters, there is so much to do.

reviewer 3 : 8/10, it's all very well put together and there is nothing that will really trip you up letting you move along at a nice pace. the game also has well paced battles and deep gameplay. the only thing that bothered me really was the camera being a little wonky at times outside of battles especially in dungeons. could the over the top character's personalities end up dividing people on this game to some degree?

reviewer 4 : 8/10, this game not only gives you the ability to explore many worlds but also has a deep combat system, an easy to understand system of character development and good pacing. you'll enjoy all aspects of this game. i also like the item creation system, private actions, etc. i found the voice acting to be a little lacking but that said this is a game anyone can enjoy.

That makes it the highest rated Star Ocean game in Famitsu...

tri-Ace games in Famitsu:

Valkyrie Profile 1 - 37/40
Radiata Stories - 36/40
Star Ocean 4 - 34/40
Valkyrie Profile 2 - 34/40
Star Ocean 2 - 33/40
Infinite Undsicovery 32/40
Star Ocean 3 (original buggy version) - 32/40
Star Ocean 1 - 31/40

Not sure about the last one, and I can't remember what VP DS scored (I think it was a 32/40)

Yet another character revealed this week with a familiar last name: Steve D. Kenny. :O
Claude and Ronyx ancestor!

Famitsu says the game is 50 hours long.
New scans reveal the Colosseum and Bunny Races (ugh!)

50 hours! Very good to hear, I was worried about the length but I'm at ease now. Any known pre-order bonuses out there? I know the Japanese version has a CD bonus, hopefully we get something too?

??

Just joining the conversation, but why does the US version look better than the Japanese version?

The interface change is not that massive, they just changed the color scheme and the background image.

I think the CG/Anime switch is a bigger change, I wonder how they'll look in the dialog boxes...

Will they have character art in the dialog boxes though, its been a while since I played 3 but can't remember it being that way.

the famitsu score and the new scans put me in a good mood, so what the hell I'm making the official thread now.
