I will say, the game's still a year out. The frame rate in the Guardians of the Galaxy reveal trailer was pretty bad too and they fixed it before release.

IMO the one thing they could do is make a retro-styled SO game with sprite characters, pre-rendered backgrounds, 2D anime cutscenes, and a minimal amount of voice acting. Now that would be something I'd actually want to play.

SO1&2 were cool. Then they decided they wanted to be freaking Xenosaga with never-ending cutscenes and dialog (except nowhere near as good), and replaced charming 2D anime characters with 3D models that look like freakish rubber dolls.

It's a shame Akimans' 2D artwork doesn't or isn't being translated that well to 3D.

• Looks like the best exploration in the series. Flying around in a larger open world almost on par with Xenoblade from early impressions in the trailer.
• Jury is out on the battle system, but that is usually the main reason to play any of these games. Looks like it might be more action focused.

All the rest is really not that big of a deal for the series. It's not going to be anyone's GOTY, but it looks fine to me. These games also go on deep sales and can be picked up for $10 if you want to wait.

I think they had the best luck recently with part 4 when it was near launch on 360.

I want to be. I'll still try it out, but this new flavor of jrpg that has been evolving over the last 10-15 or so years just sucks imo. I just don't see the appeal anymore. It's corny and cheap and feels like a shitty anime, and don't even get me started on the endless hallways and cringe VAs

I liked this series a lot in the beginning, but it's lost a lot of its shine, and tri-Ace is not the elite developer they once were.

But with all that said, I like what we're seeing here. Looks open world (at least in the Xenoblade sense), with seamless battles, some interesting traversal... All that looks good. So I'm interested to see how it shapes up.

They need to get a better character artist for their franchise. Look how much of an impact great character art/design had for Tales Of Arise. That game is the fastest selling in the series. For JRPG's just like manga/anime the art/design is very important.

They need a better modeler and Art Director. The artist is not the problem at all IMO.

I mean…. This series has had a whopping 2 mainline entires over the last 2 decades, so I'm not sure how much we can infer about the new game's performance based on the "recent" ones.

But let's see. SO4 got a mediocre reception and most people thought the series was dead after that. SO5 surprised us that it even got made, and surprised us even more that it managed to be worse than SO4.

So if we're going to extrapolate:

- it will have cutscenes that are roughly the length of the LotR trilogy (extended edition)

- your party will consist of one tsundere, one female childhood friend, a loli, a furry, an edgelord who starts as a bad guy but then joins your team, and one female who is literally a pair of walking watermelon-sized tits

- the game will be responsible for multiple scrotum injuries from making gamers cringe so hard

- the battle system will be kinda fun

At this point I think Star Ocean is intentionally cheesy like its some traditional they feel obligated to uphold.
