Again, I have respect for DT. I believe he knows that. I just like for people to consider their own biases when it comes to situations like that, and I really hate the modern casual tossing around of Nazi. I have had a lot of people tell me that I have the signs are well and I need to get a diagnosis but I heard it's very difficult to diagnose as an adult.

With enough money you can fish for almost any mental illness diagnosis.

As someone who's autistic, it's not something I celebrate, (I know the article doesn't actually say this, but since people have brought it up anyway) but the notion that we're all perpetual toddlers is also somewhat inaccurate.

Honestly, for me at least, it's neither a superpower nor a tragedy. It's a mixed bag of positives and negatives. Makes me clueless at socializing at gives me massive issues with anxiety and sensory processing, but at the same time I can hyperfocus or recall minute details to an extent most people can't, and I was reading and writing at an adult level when I was like 7.

The problem is that its a very broad category; saying someone is autistic is like saying "this animal is a fish" when that could mean anything from a pet goldfish to Jaws.

I do think that self-diagnosis is a problem, where you have people jumping on the bandwagon because it makes them feel special, but at the same time it is also a very real condition that does have a big impact on the lives of people who genuinely have it.

In layman's term its a brain function defect that makes a person have what you'd call abnormal (to others) habits and interactions with the world. They might have difficulty learning certain things, eating certain foods or interacting with/in certain spaces. They may also have "Triggers" that cause them various levels of distress or certain very specific habits that they need to stick to to be able to function normally.

No two autistic people are equal. Its a spectrum and everyone experiences it uniquely; a healthy way is to see it as being personality quirks of a person that are unique to him/her that they couldn't change. It can't be cured and its reasons are hypothesized to be many/unknown.

Since its such a vague disease with unknown causes there are many terrible people out there that use it as a clutch for sympathy farming and to enable their own terrible behavior. They self-diagnose as Autistic or deliberately play it up to not have to face consequences for being bad human beings. Most social media people that say they are "On the spectrum" are blatant liars farming for interaction and "Special status"

It's a shame that is where most of my assumptions will go these days.

I have friends with genuinely autistic children, you know like concentration issues and learning disabilities etc and i just feel for them, they aren't well off and they don't get the greatest care from the gov, money isn't infinite and i feel bad for those who will suffer the long term fallout when the money well goes dry or is dimished by all these narcissists using a genuine condition to try improve their like and subscribe rates (or to just not write that exam they didn't study for, i saw a lot of that at uni)

My son has a genuine autistic child as a friend, they met at school, started playing online games with him, eventually started doing activities together (catching a movie etc..) And let me tell you, I really feel for his parents, it's absolutely bonker what they have to go through each day.

Yeah, most people can't even tell I am autistic, as I have 36 years of practise in pretending to be "normal".
Putting on this mask of normality though takes a lot of effort, and is exhausting.

While the person who cannot verbally communicate and needs constant lifelong care and supervision is one kind of autism, it's not the only kind, sort of like Dobermans and Chihuahuas are both dogs though they are very different.
That's why it's a "spectrum".

Brain wiring is just an analogy, autism can't be diagnosed with a brain scan. The "wires" are way too small and complex. If you're interested in the precise criteria of how autism is diagnosed google the DSM criteria.

The idea of "Autism" is just a framework for us to try to understand a how certain people's brains work differently, but it's a very broad definition because we don't understand brains that well. I personally don't think it's very useful as a label, as we can see from this thread there are some wild misconceptions about the whole concept.
