Star Trek Discovery turned a TNG two-parter into a three-part episode...

...and it was actually pretty good.

Unification III. In the 32rd century, Spock's efforts to reunify Vulcans and Romulans result in Vulcan being renamed Ni'Var (a Vulcan term meaning two parts that was created in 1967) and him being revered there for unifying the two races. They even found a way to include Nimoy via a two shots from TNG.

Best episode of that show by far.

I loved that TNG episode. One of their high minded set pieces.. funny how they constantly take on intolerant, warlike social structures~ you'd almost think multiculturalism and progress was something worth struggling for~

I feel an urge to point out that Leonard Nimoy narrates Civilization 4, in case anyone didn't know that.. it's really super duper.

Let me know if/when they deal with those slug body snatcher things from the end of TNG season 1 (2?). IIRC they set them up as a potential big bad and then never mentioned them again.

  • Michael and Denise Okuda elaborated in their Star Trek Chronology (rev. 1996, p. 290): "At the time the episode was written, this was apparently intended to lead to the introduction of the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation's second season. The Borg connection was dropped before 'Q Who?' (TNG) was written, and the truth about the parasites remains a mystery."

i think discovery gets a lot of flack here and on /tv/, but as a sci fi show, it is entertaining. and there really isnt much out there in sci fi anymore.

Season One is dog shit. Seriously Nemesis level of shit. But still better than Into Darkness.

Season Two was a HUGE improvement with a great Pike and Spock setting up their spin off series.

Like TNG, the show has come into its own in Season Three and has been really good so far.

They did, the Borg was originally supposed to be them but the idea was abandoned due to A: The episode in question had caused issues with higher ups due its gory nature and B: The "slugs" proved to be too expensive from a technical standpoint to make them a recurring villan.

Nothing stopping them of course from reintroducing them as CG here though.

Yeah it's not amazing but as this light show when you just want to relax and watch something while eating dinner on a weeknight or something it's decent.

I recently started watching The Orville and find it pretty fun too. It's an unashamed ripoff and the humor is very hit or miss but it's still fairly enjoyable. The episodic nature keeps it fresh and varied, just watched an episode last night that was basically a parody of cancel culture.

Well that was a first good episode in this show. And a first episode where Burnham did not seems like nauseating little cunth.

It's a terrible, terrible episode. It's fucking nonsensical.

Being sci-fi doesn't give it an excuse to be nonsensical nonsense.

Watch any TNG and see how good the writers were compared to the waffle filled nonsense writers have been throwing at the screen here. (For the last 2 seasons and a half, there is always a chance it'll change, isn't there? 😆)

I've only seen the first two seasons but The Expanse is superior especially second season.

And I'm the kind who prefers more high tech space opera adventure over the more realistic slower paced type like Expanse but it's good.

Although I still haven't seen it, I imagine Mandalorian is far better as well.

lol no, this episode was shit as always. Burnham still is the saviour. They even go so far saying Spock was the man he was because of Burnham. Jesus fucking christ. The episode was a cryfest again, with even the Vulcan getting watery eyes due to the *amazing* speech by Burnham. I'm so sick of this character, the actress sucks ass as well as she has only a few facial expressions, none of them are believable. Tilly as Number One, and of course she starts crying over this. If Troi would've been on the Discovery she would've hung herself a thousand times. At least this episode didn't have the dumb non-binary imaginary Trill.

I'm watching TNG again and it's like eyebleach for Discovery. No one is yelling all the time, there are actual conversations, there isn't a crewmember disobeying orders every episode, no crying all the time. It's bliss.

As some guy on Reddit said:

Why does she always whisper?

Why can't she get through an episode without crying?

Why hasn't she been demoted yet for numerous acts of disobedience?

Why is every shitty little thing so dramatic with her?

Why does she behave like a 14 year old teenager?

Why is it all about her and so little about the Crew who are waaaay more interesting characters?

Why does she always get to have the last word?

Why is it always acceptable for her to still patronize people even if they call her out on her bs?

Seriously, even Q's son would be better suited to be a Starfleet officer than Burnham. She is absolutely unfit for duty as an officer. If she pulled those stunts under Picard she'd be off the ship quicker than she can disobey a direct order.

It was the best episode from Season 3, but Season 3 was pretty abysmal anyway. Even this episode is worse than just an average TNG episode. It is a fucking shame what they made out of Star Trek. Worst of all is this abysmal writer team, they should all be fired.
