Villain is definitely Robert April. Drew McWeeney's theory works too too well. As a person whose exposure to ST is 1) the '09 reboot 2) probably 3 episodes total of the original series 3) two episodes of TNG, I'm perfectly fine with that. A family theme coupled with examining Kirk's role as Enterprise patriarch sounds functional.

I agree.

The 9 min trailer in 3D imax was great, my friends and I had a conversation about why we like the new star trek movies. I think it boils down to the character interactions and relationships are all great and mirror the original characters in tone. The charisma of the actors over shadows how shitty the plot is, literately when we were recounting the plot. We were like wow. that story line fucking blows. The 3D was great too.

Right here

Also, as a note: I debated whether or not to spoiler tag that name in my other post, but I saw others putting it untagged so I went for it. That said, the way this writer came up with this theory involved seeing something on a set visit. Not really a full spoiler, but he added up clues and stuff. I dunno. I don't think knowing who the villain is should bug people, especially when it's technically just a theory.

If this is true, could Weller be playing the old April?

Well now, this theory is interesting. I almost kind of like it too.

I can't beleive they have kept the plot of this movie so secret, lol. May can't some soon enough.

eh I dunno. I think the character interactions are a big part of it, but only because they don't rely heavily on the original material. Going in I knew the very basics of Trek characters, and the first film built those characters well without ever making it feel like their representations relied on past knowledge. in that sense it was a reboot done right.
the other big factor for me was the pacing and scale, movie felt grand and slick. And I never thought the plot was stupid. no stupider than the plots of the little Trek I've seen before. For example, I'm pretty sure City on the Edge of Forever is one of the top episodes of the original series and its timeline fudging is no better or worse than the '09 reboots.

I just watched the 9 min preview, Holy Shit was that awesome. That hyped me up more for this movie than anything else so far. Explains a few things that had me wondering from the shorter 2 min trailer too.

So far, this is looking incredible.

:45 seconds into the new trailer.. Spock is sitting on the bridge in his uniform.. looks like the Captain's chair... and a SEATBELT on his shoulder.

Makes sense if they're crashing in the atmosphere.

Wait, what?

1) Likely. But it took OG-Trek until Nemesis to finally have 'seatbelts' and it was a deleted scene. Just an interesting thing that'll make some nerds happy.

2) Just theorizing.. Looking at the trailer, the Enterprise gets pretty fucked up.. and the whole theme seems to be about sacrifice, so I'm betting the big E gets destroyed, and perhaps we see the NCC-1701-A at the end of this film.

There were reports that ILM started working on some CG shots that 'they knew were needed' even before Principal photography started. It'd make sense that maybe they needed the extra time to model/rig/light a new ship, seeing as the current Enterprise was already done from the first film...

Totally a theory, but I'd love to see what a refit/new class Enterprise would look like in the JJVerse :)

This is a common occurrence in general though, particularly with films you know will have some all-cg sequences.

I have a feeling that shot of
Alice Eve's character screaming after the shots of Uhura and Spock kissing was a nod to the fans who don't approve of their relationship.
:P
