Following the massive success of the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery, fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise have a lot to look forward to. Not only is Star Trek: Short Treks -- a limited series of four short episodes -- currently airing on the streaming service, there is also an animated series in the works courtesy ofRick and Morty writer Mike McMahan titled Star Trek: Lower Decks. But that's not all -- the reason most fans are excited about Star Trek once again is because Sir Patrick Stewart will return to the franchise in a new live-action series that will see him reprise his famous Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
While the project is currently in the writing phase, there is very little we know of the actual series other than the fact that it will feature the new adventures of an older Picard. In fact, we don't even have an official title yet. However, thanks to a new report from The Wrap, we now have a partial release date: Stewart's new Star Trekseries should blast off sometime near the end of 2019 -- roughly a year from now.
The news comes from the CBS Corporation CCO David Nevins, who revealed at the 46th Annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference the projected star start date for the series. "In 2019, its not one Star Trek, it’s two Star Treks. Discovery at the beginning of the year, and Picard will start at the end of the year," Nevins told reporters.
The upcoming Star Trek series is said to go in unexpected territory, given that many years will have passed for the characters since fans saw him last. It was previously reported that Sir Patrick Stewart himself was helping shape the vision of the series and the character, and that he was challenging the writers of the new series to be bold and different.
