Star Wars: Clone Wars [Wii] interview + Screen

IGN: Wii owners are a finicky bunch. Why should they be excited about Star Wars: The Clone Wars?

Ken Fox: The promise of a Wii Lightsaber game has hung in the air since the Wii hit the shelves. We think this is the game that delivers on that promise. It also delivers on what we think Wii owners will want from a game based on the new Clone Wars Movie, DVD, and TV series. The Clone Wars is an exciting way to relive the duels from the series using your Wii remote as a lightsaber, as well as keep the gameplay open and accessible to everyone.

At least now I won't have to choose between Force Unleashed Wii or 360. I can just get 360 Force Unleashed and play Wii Clone Wars. :D

I liked Clone Wars much more than Episode 3. I dunno, but this graphics look far to good to be on the Wii...

Not really. Its not as strong as the other 2, but its still a pretty capable system.

"Developing specifically for the Wii also gave us the opportunity to really dial in the look of the game to match the show very closely rather than needing art assets to be usable cross-platform. "

A game developed from the ground up for the Wii and with a good deal of effort can look really nice.

We are very happy with the look of the game. We use a lot of the visual tricks that the Wii is best at, but more than any specific technical achievement, I am proud of the fact through all of the technical achievements and the very close contact we have had with the animation team making the movie and the series; we have been able to achieve a look that really matches the source material and creates the very real feeling that you are playing the show.

Keeping my eye on this one.

Also another intresting section non-graphics related:

We've tried to make the lightsaber control as intuitive and fun as possible. It's not a Lightsaber simulator, but when you swing your Wii remote left to right; your character does the same. You use the thumbstick on the nunchuck to move your character and swing the Wii remote to swing your Lightsaber. The buttons all do cool stuff like use the force, block and dodge, but the focus is really on putting the Wii remote in the players hand and saying 'This is your Lightsaber!'

We are not doing much with the pointer beyond menu choices as we felt like it might take away from the feeling of the Wii remote being like a Lightsaber. As far as gestural controls, there's a few 'mini game' moments that use some light gestures, but still within the context of wanting it to really feel like you're swinging your Lightsaber not using a game controller.

PLEASE deliver and be an example to other third party western developers.

The screen looks nice. I like Tartakovsky's designs, and it seems to translate well into the game.

Announcing this might be a bad marketing move against the Force Unleashed Wii, though. But I'm not complaining. Two chances for Lucasarts to get the lightsaber combat right. :D

Looks nice, if a little bland, but the artstyle makes up for it.

Kinda was hoping TFU would be "the" lightsaber game, though.

"Wii owners are a finicky bunch"

Someone should tell other publishers that.

I hope the multiplayer in this works out well.

This game is based off the CGI Animated film/tv series coming later this year although much of the style appears to echo Tartakovsky's series.

Edit: Wikipedia
"Genndy Tartakovsky, director of the first Clone Wars series, will not be involved with the production, but character designer Kilian Plunkett referred to the character designs from the 2D series when designing the characters for the 3D series."

ah

I'm looking forward to the outcome of this game, however it sounds like they are gimping the force push, relegating it to a button press.

Is this a deliberate design mechanic to make room for the nunchuck push of Force Unleashed Wii?

God Damn it!

Grrr...pointer controlled force moves..why won't anyone do it? Bastards.

If some third-world devs can get 1:1 golf swinging done on the Wii, there's no excuse in hell for the lightsabers not to be 1:1 in this from such a big development house.

Slightly unrelated question:

Who's directing the film? Is it Lucas? Please say no.

It ain't Lucas, but I forget who at the moment.

I'm pretty sure real 1:1 controls would be really unwieldy and terrible. I'd much rather see a complex, but more moderate control scheme, akin to the controls of Wii Sports boxing, but far more responsive.

Hmmm....interesting.

If they really do more to basically allow me to have the type of over-the-top stylish action that the Clone Wars toons had, consider me sold. Especially if Mace Windu can punch things to death. :D

Perfect, this is the Star Wars I want for Wii. I always thought the Clone Wars art design would be a perfect fit...was hoping for a cel shaded look though...ah well, beggers can't be choosers...

Isn't the problem with swordfighting 1:1 always with the swing through? In golf, the club always swings through the ball (after hitting it) unimpeded meaning it can exactly match your motion whereas in swordfighting if the sword collided with something while your hand didn't it'd create problems. However, I still think if it's real 1:1 this shouldn't be a problem as moving the sword back before the object it collided with should still be 1:1 but whatever

2 valid excuses

1. sword or light saber motion is more freeform and therefore is more complicated than a golf swing which typically has its arc of motion fairly well defined.

2. sword or light saber interactions are more complicated than a golf swing which has a very specific intended interaction e.g. you need to account for interactive agents and ambiguous situations where physical motion cannot be mapped to the virtual environment because of obstruction (such as a sword strike which is blocked in the virtual world).

Not his. Shame too

Damn, it looks like Im going to have to get 2 lightsaber games for Wii this fall. Man, I will be living in lightsaber bliss (as long as they dont suck).

Anyone pick up one of those silly "light sabre attachments" for the mote and is willing to admit it?

I'll most likely buy it day 1 if the game videos and impressions look good.

Hope there's video of a person playing with gameplay in the same shot,
to see how well the game controls.

And someone who is well versed in the controls prior to the video.

Yeah no kidding... Haha...
Would be great if beta testers started doing the video demo's for games.
Instead of reporters, like seriously, who can play the game better?

Apparently GTTV will be showing "A new Star Wars Game" this week, so a trailer will probably pop up soon.

Yeah, I like the cartoon look in that screenshot. Color me interested.

Hey, buddy, you know what Wii gamers want out of a Star Wars based game? Same as what ALL gamers want out of a Star Wars based game.

A GOOD FUCKING STAR WARS GAME.
