Star Wars: Clone Wars [Wii] interview + Screen

Presumably you know people or have worked at Krome yourself.

There seems to be no other reason on earth to feel such optimisim for a company who's best games strive only for the heady heights of mediocrity.

I know a lot of people at a lot of developers, though it is fair to say our company is closer to Krome as we have worked with them before a few years back.

But that is not to say I am blindly optimistic. You may consider their back catalogue mediocre, but then you won't be aware of the budget or timeframe challenges they may have faced in the development of some of these titles.

I am recognising that the building blocks are there for a great game to be possible. I also recognise that while back catalogue may be some indicator of ability, it does not dictate or cap the quality of future titles as developers always have the chance to improve.

So, rather than write this one off right now, I'd rather give Krome the chance by waiting for the game to come out first.

A lightsabre game is the first thing everyone thought of for the Wii and here it is being lumbered with a third rate developer and the most aristically bankrupt Star Wars movie project so far.

Well, Lucasarts has an extensive due diligence project and ended up placing the title at Krome, so they are least think Krome is the best developer for the job at the given budget within the given timeframe. If they had wanted to place it somewhere else they could have.

Is it so hard to do a Wii lightsaber game like this?

so much hate in this thread. why? you, people, do realize this game is not meant to atone for lucas' deadly sins, right?

decent animation and fight dynamics. actually, the footage looks like a decent weapon-base fighter. i, for one, will give the game a try.

The single player sounds pretty bare bones compared to TFU, but since the Wii development of both games is handled by KROME it remains to be seen which one is better.

I don't think its meant to be super expansive, it sounds like its just a fighting game with interactive scenes from the movie (QTE) to move the narrative along. I am sure Force Unleashed will be the better of the two games

I really want to see it in motion, I like the Clone Wars (animated and cgi) so I will be buying it but I hope it moves fast and is not just a motion/waggle fest

As far as the movie, this is the most excited i've been for a Star Wars film since I was a kid (No Lucas fucking it up shoots it up like 50 points).

As far as the game, I was excited, but it's just a fighting game? I thought it was more an adventure platformer like Force Unleashed. The game will have to be pretty damn good to get me to dive in.

Yeah. Hype - infinity for me.

Nintendo's stupid peripherals are gonna make me just wait for Jedi Knight IV exclusive to the Wii with first-person MotionPlus Lightsaber controls.

plz:(

I like fighting games... but Star Wars always struck me as an action series.

Too bad too. I really like the art style.

But there's already TFU, what would've been the point of having two games like this in the span of just a couple of months?

It sounds pretty basic and not very deep. I like the style though and if the controls are good I'll pick it up for cheap.

You're right, but for the longest time I had this feeling that TFU was gonna be garbage (due to it being a multiplatform Wii title) and that Clone Wars, as a dedicated Wii effort, would do it right.

Ask Sega lolz.

Suddenly, IGN is very quiet about MotionPlus :lol

Well, I hope this turns out good, looking forward to the MotionPlussed sequel.

Aren't they both developed by Krome?

Well one has Sonic as a werewolf and one Sonic with a talking sword. Both of which are clearly needed :lol .

They should totally make Wii Star Wars. Like, a starwars game using motionplus and miis. Lego Star Wars shows people want cutesy shit in star wars, and who doesn't like miis?

New IGN preview is pretty glowing.

IGN said:
We quickly learned that evading and blocking are just as vital to success in this game as attacking. Watching the Krome staffers play really highlighted just how well the team has captured the back and forth of a lightsaber duel -- while both players were almost always on the attack, there'd be entire exchanges without anyone landing a hit; where blows would be parried, attacks evaded and flying objects sidestepped. It's fast, stylish and kinetic, just the way it should be.
IGN said:
To accomplish this, the team has recorded 4000 lines of dialogue (yes, for a fighting game) and used the voice actors from the series to ensure its authenticity. Refreshingly, there are even lines that reference some of the more absurd scenarios that can occur in the game. When Obi-Wan faces off against himself, for instance, he might quip "I'm Obi-Wan, which must make you Obi-Two."
IGN said:
In terms of physicality, the team spent a lot of time making sure that the combat has a weight and believability to it. That means accurate collision detection so that when lightsabers clash, they actually clash.
IGN said:
Tying into this physicality are moments when sabers lock and the game zooms in on the fighters as they struggle against one another. It's great drama -- showing off the range of facial expressions Krome has given the characters, as well as giving players a brief reprieve from the somewhat physically intensive gameplay.
IGN said:
Unlike some of the more accessible characters, with Dooku you have minimal room for error. If you don't get the final motion in a combo exactly right, for instance, you won't complete the combo, whereas for easier characters there's far more leeway -- if you're pretty close you'll execute the move.
IGN said:
Rather than simply being static locations for the action, each arena in The Clone Wars is interactive and cinematic to some extent. You'll see objects that you can pick up and fling at your opponent using the force, familiar ships may fly by in the background, and in every arena something big happens to shift the setting up and give the fight a sense of progression.
IGN said:
Oh, and did we mention this is all running at 60 frames per second?

Hype+4

Just a little concerned there's so little content.

Wow, that really did seem postive.

I'm still wary about a purchase, I'm not sure if the game has enough meat to it to warrant buying it, but I'm definitely more interested now.

Yah, there's probably going to be a sequel with more content (and hopefully MotionPlus), but for the first game this is all crazily impressive. Since it's pure-fighting, I can see this game doing well for parties and such.

Damn, both TFU and this sound awesome for the Wii.

Wait, this game and TFU is made by Krome? Its gotta be different teams though right? If so will the fighting have similarities between both since both have versus fighting which sound very robust? I hope they have many differences in the mechanics cause I wanna buy both.

Just a few more weeks till TFU, though, so, YAY!

Sums up my thoughts, except I'm more skeptical of Force Unleashed.

And TFU comes out on my birthday. <3

The facts mentioned do sound quite promising, though.

I was weary that it was a preview, but the facts they present sounded too promising not to post.

Sounds quite good.

In the end, I'm pretty much expecting that CW and TFU are probably going to be basically two-halves of the same whole, such that the failings of one will be the strengths of the other, and vice-versa.

That said, as much as I'm getting tired of the Clone Wars and the "between trilogies" story arcs in themselves, I probably will give CW the edge, in the notion that it's a fighter of some sort. :lol

Krome sounds like one kickass studio, makes us Australians proud. Clone Wars = Day 1 after reading that interview.
I'm still gonna wait for some reviews before I let my Jedihype boil over, but that sounded freaking awesome.

I love the visuals, and now even the play mechanics sound awesome. I'll try to calm myself, but this gave me a little balltickle.

It may look nice but the controls seem pretty crappy imo. I'll rent it for some litesaber action but it's really going to have to wow me for me to buy this game.

Well they can make a hell of a game now that motion-plus is available. They could call it Light-sabre training and sell 20 million copies.
