Then you have Finn that gives you the perspective of a character who was a Stormtrooper with the Imperials to become a rebel. That's unique.

Check and mate.

Please. Just the fact that Rey may be the main character absolutely separates it from the old series. Then you have Finn that gives you the perspective of a character who was a Stormtrooper with the Imperials to become a rebel. That's unique.

Rey = Luke
Finn = Han
Poe = Leia
Chewbacca = Chewbacca
Han = Obi Wan
Death Star III = Death Star
Kylo = Vader
Serkis's Bad Guy = Palpatine
Luke = Yoda

I wonder how much insight of the mind of a stormtrooper we will get, my bet: almost none.

My GF isn't all that into Star Wars, she's seen the movies, she knows the canon / lore, she knows the difference between a Wookiee, Ewok and Jawa. Shown her the trailer, she looks up, grabs my shirt, gets in my face and says "please tell me we're seeing this!"

I smile content and say I already got tickets.

Long story short, best sex ever.

You have a very unusual relationship.

Everything about Kylo Ren looks awful. The most cartoonishly overdone lackluster villain you can imagine. Granted you could say the same about Vader and Palpatine but it's been 30+ years so I figure maybe they could have come up with something slightly less silly.

There's definitely some parallels but some of the things aren't what you expect.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant more important than his role in the first Star Wars implied he should be.
Like, he was the underboss, the muscle, evil black space nazi shock trooper.
He was not meant to be that central to the plot, and AFAIK, he was not planned on being Luke's father (OMG SPOILERZZZZ), it was his popularity of the character that pushed him into a more central role to the story in Empire and Return of The Jedi, and that trend was pushed into ridiculous levels with the prequels.

And again, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that (though I would probably prefer if they kept him as an asshole space nazi, but whatever), I'm just saying that putting Vader in places where it doesn't necessarily makes strict sense due to his popularity (AKA pandering) has always been a part of the Star Wars franchise.

Ah, yeah that I get. He was a loyal attack dog in ANH, Tarkin had immense authority.

Who cares if they are parallels? We are in an industry where they reboot entire franchise and do the same story again.

This is the restart of star wars in a lot of ways. I frankly love any throw backs to the past movies as these movies make their own trilogy. Plus I fucking love the idea of another death star. Heck fucking yes.

Just have fun. It's gonna be another movie.

I

You say that, but the entire OT never needed to go to the home of the Empire at all. We stayed in the backwaters of Imperial rule, never needing to worry about the throne of power.

And in keeping with how much they are keeping to the template of the OT, I wouldn't be surprised if they keep to that rule. They'll certainly want to avoid "senate/jedi council" style scenes. That's one element they will consciously stay away from, I'm sure.

The OT wanted to go to Coruscant, it was in the script and they had all the concept art but they figured it would be either expensive or impossible so they set the climax on a second Death Star instead (something that many people criticise Jedi for). It's speculation but I think the original version of Jedi's climax on Coruscant would have made for a better film.

Like it or not the prequels are cannon so Coruscant is important, and they can avoid overly political sections as there is so much to the planet. I really can't stand the subtle prequel-bashing that surrounds this film, they have to address what's going on on the capitol planet as the fans will want to know.

is the expectation that this will be a 'star trek: generations' kind of handover movie, and perhaps the old guard won't be as present in the next two?

I'm really hoping that Luke gets to throw the "I'm finishing what you started" bs back at Kylo.
What does "I'm finishing what you started" even mean? Vader didn't start shit. Palpy was the one who came up with the whole conquer the galaxy thing. Vader was along for the ride.

While Star Wars does show that Tarkin had a lot of authority, Vader certainly gets more screen time and is a much larger presence in the film. Lucas almost certainly decided to focus on him even more after the first film due to his popularity, but Vader is clearly the central villain in ANH.

This is it, isn't?

Star Wars is back... Like, REALLY back!

Watching this movie for the first time is going to be unreal. Just like when I watched the old movies when I was a kid.

I can't fucking wait.

That reads like a bad scene from some anime. I don't believe you.

Normally I'm the type that hates crowded theaters.

But I just bought tickets for opening night. Last showing of the night tho, nobody under 18 allowed in, thankfully.

I want to experience this with a super hype crowd.

There is some intention of that but its not as done deal like Generations was. If anything the focus will likely just change from certain old cast members to others while they assist the new cast

best thing is that it appears to set the scene without showing the entire movie in the trailer. Hopefully that sparks a trend in trailers.

It's not prequel-bashing so much as it's OT-modelling. The OT connected with audiences in a way that is difficult to put in words... while the PT was so odious that it almost threatened the earth-shattering social currency that had been earned from the OT.

The new films will model themselves on the OT and take on its character until it is safe to depart from that.

I will be very, very, very surprised if Coruscant is in the new film. Feel free to bump this if I'm wrong, because I don't know anything. But I believe it is something they will shy away from as they attempt to rejuvenate the SW brand.

I'm sure we will return to Coruscant eventually. I believe that Disney/Lucasfilm does not think it is the time to do so.

I suppose you could say you're...force sensitive

Oh ho ho ho!

That's very EU terminology though..... excised from canon, it is ;)

Seems nice. I wonder how much will actually focus on the villains though. Storm troopers are always my favorite part, not so much the jedi

It would be interesting to know who's actually in control of Coruscant at the time of TFA. I'd be surprised if we saw Coruscant in this trilogy as well. It's more likely to appear in the spin-offs.

The trailer was amazing. It produced me a lot of feels. It also is rather in the style of the original trilogy and looks amazing. On top of that there is actually some good acting in the trailer, which is a plus.

Also, nice to see Luke finally stepping into his daddy's shoes.

I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, and I expected this trailer to be a bombastic STAR WARS IN YO FACE kind of trailer.

Not so. It was a wonderfully understated, beautiful little trailer. The art and cinematography are top class. Definitely makes me want to see it as soon as it's showing.

I wasn't necessarily a fan of how his lines were delivered either, however as you say, if you actually just presented the Darth Vader character the way it was in the original Star Wars, I think most people would think it was stupid as well.

Some of this is a function of the times but http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1317709849/ looks completely awful.

I will say that Abrams is really good at nostalgia...

I would agree, I actually don't think it will be in Episode 7. I'm just hoping they don't ignore it long-term just because it's mostly associated with the prequels.

Don't know whether it's my eyes, or the fact that I'm watching it (again) on my phone, during the shot of the Knights...are they surrounded by bodies?

And the more I listen to it, I don't think Kylo's lines are delivered at/to/in regards of Vader.

Edit: Also, during one of the last X-Wing/Tie battle shots, there's trenches in the snow. What if the snow planet and Death Star 3 are the same thing? Like they built a huge ass weapon and base into a planet, rather than building another Death Star.

When they do go back, it will be worth the wait.

But for the record, I don't associate Coruscant with the prequels. I associate it with 90s PC games like Tie Fighter and Dark Forces, because that was the first time it had been truly realized in a visual medium ;) ....

I've not read any speculative points but purely from what I'd find interesting, it'd be poetic
if Chewie died, Han got pissed and went down in a angry blaze of glory in the Falcon leading a trench run against the new Death Star type device but failed and it remained into the next movie. A good twist on people's expectations that it would be taken down

I'm the same myself, TIE Fighter and Dark Forces looked exactly like what Zahn described. I was blown away back then.
