I think that was referring to the Jedi vs. Sith/Dark Side. How many people in the entire galaxy knew Luke was a Jedi or that Palpatine and Vader were Sith? Not many, I'd wager. If people forgot after 20 years about the Jedi and Sith. Surely after 50 years after the fall of the Republic even less would know/care.

Yeah, baring in mind that even in Ep 4-6, the Jedi were a distant memory, with Luke being the first new one since the start of the Empire.
