Yo dog, that's not how aspect ratios work. Unless you pillarboxed it, that is.

No, I zoomed in so the black bars at the bottom and top of the 16:9 1080p version were gone, thus filling out the 2560x1080 monitor with the entire movie frame as opposed to simply pillarboxing as you mentioned.

edit: And, yes, that's exactly what I was referring to. You can just barely make it out, but it is lettering of some kind.

So... who's going to the premiere with a Jar Jar Binks shirt

I got mine ready. Canary yellow with blue letters that say: BINKS RULES! Made it to troll the opening day line for AOTC. Despite countless Internet heroes berating me for using a Binks avatar at the time, not a single person out of the thousands gathered uttered anything negative within earshot. Odd.

The shock was too strong.

I'd dress up as Jar Jar if I could.

Havent followed anything besides the movie, but is there a book or something that already will explain the rise of this new first order? Somehow I don't think they will explain in detail how it all started in EP 7

Was this already known about, or has Lucasfilm been using a screengrab of the end of the film's opening crawl for literally three trailers and nobody has realized it, despite all of them being viewed hundreds of millions of times on an international scale? How could that be possible?

While you're playing sherlock - see if you can line up the starfield you're talking about right there with the very first frame of the teaser, before Rey swipes the cloth out of the way.

This is what I wore to the episode III line

Aftermath begins to explain some of it. There's more in Lost Stars. Then on Dec 18th is the Before the Awakening book which should explain even more.

There is the Before the Awakening anthology that covers a bit of the three leads' stories leading up to the film. Finn's should shed light on at least some of what the First Order's about. It's due out the day of the movie's release, though.

The issue is that, even in the very first frame, the stars/light pinholes are already blurring from motion, making it difficult to actually line them up with the stars on the end shot (if they even do indeed line up). Somebody with more technical/photoshop prowess than me could give it a shot, though.

That said, I'm not particularly adherent to the theory that this shot is actually the first of the movie post-crawl; not that it can't be a clever transition from a space scene (it most likely is) but I'm still betting on a pan-down to Star Destroyer or... the other spoiler-y thing that's been floating around the web for more than a year now. You know the one.

Watched ANH tonight for the first time in ages (sadly, the SE on Blu-Ray, although I did manage to get the despeciallized version which I will be watching someday)

Still such a great adventure story, the world-building is superb and I love that the 3 main heroes were a great partnership, some really good banter between them. That's something I hope the new film has, the prequels felt really lifeless and dull.

The score is outstanding, incredible work from Williams, GOAT composer <3

So I decided to watch The Phantom Menace earlier while I was working on some homework.

During the start of the pod racing scene, before the green light, why is there a pod that keeps revving its V8 sounding engine? Do they even have V8's on Tatooine?

That entire scene was due to Lucas's love of 1950's soured up cars.

None of the books released so far tell us much, if anything, about the First Order though. Both are at the very start of the thirty year gap.

The most we've learned from the possible origins of the First Order comes not from Aftermath or Lost Stars but from a Rebels tie-in book, The Secret Academy. I'll spoiler it just in case, but this is officially released material. The commandant of an Imperial Academy addresses a group of select cadets. The commandant's name is Hux (!!!).

“The Republic’s clones were effective soldiers because they weren’t just trained for battle but bred for it,” Hux said. “Their training began at birth, with newborns tested for eyesight and reflexes. You’ve all learned that. But what you may not know is that the Jedi were the same way—they searched the galaxy for babies and young children who shared their sorcerous gifts and trained them from the cradle. In both cases, the result was a cadre of superior, fanatically loyal warriors.”
“The clones’ nature posed a weakness, however,” Hux said. “Because they were genetically identical, they were vulnerable to the same biological agents and pathogens—and, indeed, Separatist scientists spent much of the war seeking to create bespoke viruses that would target the clone armies.
“Our Emperor was aware of this possibility and opened the ranks of the military to the entire galactic populace. By doing so, he avoided the clones’ genetic vulnerabilities and ensured that Imperial citizens knew their military was made up of their own families, rather than some lesser order of humanity. But there was a trade-off—with the clones trained from birth to be soldiers, no nonclone could ever equal their prowess in battle.”
The cadets turned in their chairs to watch the commandant’s relentless pacing.
“But what if there were a way to avoid that trade-off?" Hux asked. “What if you could train nonclone soldiers from birth? Isn’t that exactly what the Jedi did?”
The commandant stopped behind his chair and rested his hands on it, his brilliant blue eyes fixing on each cadet in turn.
“We can train stormtroopers from birth, as the clones and Jedi were,” he said. “Over generations, through careful observation and selection, we will create an army that has all the clones’ strengths but none of their weaknesses. Stormtroopers utterly loyal to the Empire who see it as their family—because that is what it will be.”
Hux smiled, smacking the back of his chair for emphasis.
“This has been a dream of mine for years,” he said. “I searched for officers who would understand what I proposed, and who could help me create these champions of our Empire. When I didn’t find those officers, I decided to follow my own advice—I would create them. You have been chosen to begin this great work alongside me—to execute my design. Together, my cadets, we shall oversee the creation of legions that ensure the Empire lives forever.”

The script never leaked.

You're totally right, excuse me, I meant the synopsis they've puzzled together from rumors, leaks and teasers/the trailer.

No spoilers, just some more info about the format of that synopsis:
They've made it into a handy PDF format with a percentage at the top of the pages that show how sure they are about the info on the page.
(They're pretty sure about 2/3rds of the movie, last part seems to have the lowest probability rating)

Guys so I have a dilemma. I got $400 Lakers vs Rocket tickets on December 17th at 7:30pm gifted to me, but I am also going with a group of 16 people to Imax 7pm showing middle row on the same day. I feel sick to my stomach.

I'm a huge basketball and Star Wars fan.

I recently dug up one of those old rub-on tattoos that come with bubblegum. It's Jar Jar. I'm tempted to put it on when I go to the movie :D

I'm probably gonna buy this:

For the premier, it is right before Xmas and all.

I'm with you, man! I'm buying this:

My $0.02; take the basketball tickets. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but look at it this way; Star Wars is screening multiple days and if the hypetrain is real, your friends will have no problem seeing it again.
