If you watch this part in a big 1080p res, you can see that he is looking/has his head down as he pulls out the saber. The way it is shot sort of seems to me that he doesn't see anything so much as he probably senses someone/something off screen and stops to defend himself/get ready for shit to go down.

I think there's someone behind him. I can see the shot continuing as he slowly turns around, bringing the sword into a defensive stance.

I'm not as upset about it, but it's totally nostalgia pandering.

What I appreciated about The Prequel Trilogy is that it tried to stomp out some of its own ground with unique vehicle designs. We've seen so little here though, and there have already been new vehicles/bots introduced (new droid). Still, when you look at who is cast in this film, it really does seem like they're throwing anyone and everyone back in, and I'd much rather them not have to drag through all of that again. Many of those characters had 3 movies to their name, let it go.

I think you missed alot already discussed in this thread.

The movie takes places 30 years later. Literally in the film and real life, all of these people are still alive. There's no reason to not have them. Also, as someone already mentioned technology has pretty much plateaued. Anything different is just artistically liberty, and not need.

The new vehicles in the prequels are such a mixed bag though. Some are great, some are...not so great. They made the mistake of having vehicles that looked more futuristic than the OT. Thankfully it looks like they're avoiding that this time, even if they're using the power of nostalgia to do so.

What he said. No reason for the technology to jump super far in 30 years considering it's been war ever since, not like the Rebels won or something.

I loved it. Been watching it a lot.

I'm so over people that want Star Wars to be exactly like it was when they were kids but won't stop being cynical or bitter long enough to allow that to happen.

Yeah the prequels weren't as good as the OT, but they were still Star Wars:
Badass starships, hokey dialogue, droids, lightsabers, Sith Lords... Skywalkers...

Tired of the bitter thread in the Star Wars fan mindset. Super excited for this movie, and everything else we are going to be getting over the next 10 years!

These are good points, but the minor changes to designs aren't consistent with the evolution of the SW tech from the prequels to the trilogy.

one is a period of one galactic empire rising up, developing newer tools to terrorize and subdue any insurgents.
one is a galactic empire crumbling / collapsing.

we have 2 entirely different situations here.

i'm quite sure military technology made bigger generational advancements during WW2 than during the 50s and 60s.

The Good:
- Black lead. Pretty ballsy of Disney. I applaud.

The Bad:
- The seemingly slavish devotion to the originals. It's supposed to be about 50 years after the OG trilogy. Why the heck are X-Wings and the Millennium Falcon still a thing? What the hell are stormtroopers still around for? Why are we back on Tatooine? Because nostalgia pandering, that's why.
- That shot of the Falcon is a less convincing vfx shot than a great deal of the ones in the original trilogy. The sense of weight and movement just isn't believable, and makes me fear Abrams' typical over-stylized bullshit is going to result in action scenes that are little more than a mess of blur and color like the Star Trek films.

A couple of retorts:

1) It's 30 years later, not 50.
2) It's actually more realistic to expect the same vehicles than new ones. The US still uses jets that are 30 years old and bombers that are 50. They just update the avionics and such. The X-Wings in this teaser are updated ones (you can see major differences with the engines/wings, etc). Think of them as Superhornets compared to the original F-18 Hornets that the US has.
3) It's likely the movie also pushes a lot of new ground, but they wanted to show older stuff to remind people of the OT and that this is a continuation of it.
4) It's an early shot and even so looks amazing. It will look a lot better in 12 months. Also the style of shot is fairly similar to the Falcon at the Battle of Endor when it swoops under/between the medical frigate.

Seeing as we're getting a new trilogy, do you think we'll get a new Lego Star Wars game based off the Episode 7, 8 and 9.

I would be willing to bet my entire video game collection that this will be the case.

Or, you know, they won't be able to wait and do one for 7&8 with a "Complete Edition" the year after...

Nostalgia pandering? Star Wars has always been about the Skywalkers and it would make no sense to let go of the Big 3 and Co. after the roles they've played in the universe. It'd be like not seeing Yoda and Obi-Wan in the prequels. But there'll be spinoffs for films without the Big 3 I reckon.

The new film already has unique designs like the ball droid, but again Star Wars design is about showing evolutionary steps which we've seen in the prequels and in this new teaser with the X-Wing redesigns

I want to eat her butt.

Also, I loved the teaser! It's no surprise that people are complaining able the practicality of a lightsaber crossguard and the way a droid moves, but I thought both looked really cool. More importantly, I think it was ballsy to focus on the new characters, which are being playing by relatively unknown actors, instead of the returning cast. It fills me with hope that this Star Wars will stand on its own.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the prequels... no matter what, TFA can only be better. I'm pumped! It'll be nice to see a Star Wars film with actual characters for the first time in 30 years!

How do we know we're on Tatooine? It's obviously meant to invoke Tatooine but it could be any desert anywhere in the galaxy based on the trailer. Maybe we'll even get planets this time with diverse landscape instead of "Desert Planet" and "Ice Planet".

Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think this takes place anywhere near 50 years after the OT.

This is one of the things I don't like about Abrams. I wouldn't mind if he used the occasional easter egg shot but I expect way too much of this kind of throwback reference just for the sake of the reference. I just hope he doesn't let another pair of breasts linger on screen for no reason other than boobs.

Kinda hope he does cause Alice Eve OMG.

Artistic liberty is essential when you're doing something like this IMO. Kind of why I'm pro-cross-saber.

Well, we already know it's supposed to close out the Skywalker story, so they make sense, but I could do without Chewie and co. R2 and C3PO make a bit more sense because of how intrinsic they are to those stories, I will concede.

I hate racists. Maybe Boyega and Ridley kiss on screen and it will send these bigots into orbit.

Were people as gross towards Lando?

Watching a New Hope gets me even more excited for this movie!

I hope so! Can't wait for new Star Wars games and everything else

Wait...

This is impossible.
Meh, a lot of people actually like the prequel trilogy, myself included, it had some awesome moments, Cool battles and kept the franchise alive, plus generated the most amazing nerd fallout in history.

That said...there is no possible human way, to make this movie worse than episode I.There is nothing to ruin, those movies are not classics. At least not for now.

Lando is pretty much the apex of swagger and there was no twitter back then so.. probably not.

I'm sure he had people back then going "I'm racist, but...come on. It's Billy Dee Williams"

Lando IS the man.

I think Boyega is going to be awesome. I want to know more about these characters.

I predict the Miyamoto zelda effect will be in play. The new movies will get criticized to hell while the previous movies will finally be accepted and held up.

Now that those new stormtrooper helmets are confirmed, I wonder when we will see fan iterations of it hit the web?
We'll see cosplay of it at whatever the next big con is. Someone put together link cosplay from the new wiiu game scary fast after it debuted

The Final Fantasy Effect is what I like to call it, but yes, I even expect some "That makes no sense! Midichlorians can't do that!" blogs

The way that Boyega is reacting, I think maybe some tie fighters were flying by shooting at him, he falls the floor, gets up after taking his helmet off.
